B19Kress 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Just curious if anyone else has every though about doing or have done this?Outside of the at least 1,000 dollars to get complete equipment, you normally don't have to pay and it seems like if your halfway decent you could play every night or multiple games a night if you wanted to. Seems like someone always needs a sub..Just a random thought..
rebel96 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I have thought about this. I'd played a few games for beginners teams and felt pretty good. It was great fun and I already knew the basics...butterfly, positioning, stickhandling etc. But anytime I've filled in for our goalies at pick up it's been an absolutely horrific experience. On the other hand a friend of mine changed position to goalie after playing forward for about 3/4 years. He was a good player out of net and a pretty good scorer. But I guess he always had an interest in goaltending and would follow the goalie stats and movements in the NHL more closely than other players. He still plays in net with the odd excursion back outfield when we have more than 2 goalies on a given day.Different strokes for different folks I guess. mrusse01 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I've played for 20 years and have never got the chance to play goalie (outside of street hockey and stuff obviously). They used to switch it up each week when I was really little, 5 or 6 years old must have been, and I got the flu the one week it was supposed to be my turn. Who knows, I could have been the greatest goalie of all time, haha. I really do want to at least try it before I get too old and end up hurting myself. eddyo57 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 i would venture to say this is they way just about every goalie gets his start. i know started playing out. and one day i was like, you know what. why not tender? loved it ever since
B19Kress 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I would definitely want to borrow someone stuff before I dropped the $ it takes to play goalie though... Just curious if positioning is hardest thing to pick up over the actual skills of skating, stickhandling, etc..
ArcArsenal 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I think this everytime my adult team has to call rent-a-goalie because our guy can't make it.I would be absolutely brutal so its probably Better I don't give it a try.
pantherfan 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I'd love to try it if it wasn't for my fear of pucks... :(I think I'll just leave it as one of those things that looks easy until you try it.
thecat1792 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 10 years ago I went from D-man to goalie and never looked back! I absolutely love the mental side of the game, and as a goalie it so much more prevalent. I also love pressure, and think of it this way- if a forward or dman makes a mistake, no big deal. When the goalie makes a mistake, it's huge and everyone's looking at him. Go w/ cheap gear first, then invest in the good stuff. Two items you should never scrimp on though: Helmet, and Jock. Go for it, and good luck!
RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I tried it once when I was about 7, our regular goalie was sick and I was the only one on the team tall enough to wear his gear. I wasn't bad at it, first time out I only let two go against a team that was pretty decent. Overall though I just found it really boring, it really felt like I wasn't even playing hockey. I distinctly remember that even after all these years. If I knew someone that had gear that would fit I might give it another shot, but I wouldn't part with cash to do it and I think the experience would be about the same. I think it's a personality thing, you're either a goalie or you're not.

Theodoras 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I'd like to try it if a friend had equipment to borrow but i definitely wouldn't spend a cent on goalie gear...
The_Franchise 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Goaltending can turn into an addiction when it comes to equipment, just like player equipment! It is fun, but i have gotten bored of it so I am leaving the net for a couple seasons and play out and hopefully i will return to the net and love it more than ever. Anyone who has the chance to play in net by borrowing afriends equipment I say give it a try. What are you gunna lose?
B19Kress 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Only problem is I hate blocking shots... is goalie gear that much more protective so you do feel quite safe?
Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Once, when I was seven.FYI, you don't need to spend anything like a grand to get started. You can do it for less than $500 if you take your time, buy quality used stuff, and aren't too antsy about looking like a million bucks.
number21 3 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 i'd like to give it a shot someday. couldn't be much worse than i am playing out.
theWB 2 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I stepped in with my weekly pick-up group about two months ago. We must have called ten guys to play net and no one could fill the one vacant spot so I thought to myself "Well, we have the used equipment at the shop I work at and I've always wanted to try it so why not." Also i figured it would be alot more fun than playing out and shooting at posts or a jersey for half the night. Let me tell you it was hard as hell but so much fun. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The hardest aspect is definitely positioning. You have to worry not only where you are laterally but your depth to the post also. Skating will carry over. If you're a good skater out, you'll be fine in net. Also, its alot more tiring than you think. More exhausting than playing out in my opinion. I was soaked with sweat by the end of the night but well worth it. If you get the chance to strap the pads on, absolutely do it.
greech 4 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I went the other way, played 'tendy until I was 14, then switched out when I played public hockey and everybody thought I was a AA player. Five years later and I wish I'd never played goal, or else I'd be going somewhere.
Okeetee 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I'd love to try my hand as a tender at least once. I got a goalie buddy who wants to skate out in his novice league and I want to play in net for a game. It can happen!
dcdot377 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 team50 Posted Today, 01:25 PM To satisfy my curiosity I play net in lacrosse...ive been a goalie all of my life but i still insist on playing out in lax. every year the team begged me to play net but not gonna happen. if you are looking to try i would definitly try talking to your teams goalie to switch with you for a game or practice so that you dont have to buy equipment. in youth hockey the last practice of the year was always the most fun becuase i got to switch with a forward or dman. just make the offer and maybe your goalie will switch once or twice
RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 I haven't actually done it, but I'd give it a go at least once. Although I have a feeling my 'bad' knee would suffer majorly if I did.
#44wannabe 4 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 After the season finished we used always mess about at praccys in the under 19's and do kit swaps witht the goalies. I was absolutely awful in net. First time i tried it i kept skating behind the net to try and make a hit and the second time we all thought it would be a good idea to drink a few beers before practice.... Great fun though. -venom- 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 Played net for about 8 years or so, exclusively... the last 6 or 7, playing out. I miss playing net and I'm seriously considering getting back into it.
Monty22 833 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 Tried maybe three times. Interesting to get a different perspective of the game. It killed my back afterwards, and I was terrible. If possible, everyone should try it at least once.
Tricky4L 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2009 My brother plays in net so I find myself tossing on his gear for a pickup game or subbing for a beer league team about once a year. Last weekend my ACHA team needed a backup for the first of a four game set up in Spokane, WA. I stepped up and put on the gear whilst chirping our number 1 non stop saying I was gonna take the starting job during warm-ups. Did alright in warmups and in between periods my coach asked me if I wanted some time towards the end of the third. I went in with about 5 left in the third and stopped 4 of 5 and even broke some poor bloke's heart when I stopped his breakaway with a lateral toe save. I wanted that "shutout" more than anything that night but I'll take what I got.To anyone thinking about going from skater to target just remember that it shouldn't be an impulse decision because by the end of your first time out, the only thing on your mind will be... "Only once"...
fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted January 26, 2009 played in net for a few tournys when our goalie back then was injured or too scared to play (hhaha, more than one reason we called him "Cat")did pretty well, gloving most of the shots from the number one ranked team. didnt let in a goal until one team found my weak spot and kept shooting it there. coming from playing baseball as a kid, the glove reflexes were much better than the stick hand. I would continue to play for the fun of it if I had better knees.
