Crosby to miss All-Star Game

Recommended Posts

I think DiPietro's stunt last year has changed the way that teams view the ASG. I'm not sure exactly how his injuries have progressed, and if what he suffered then is connected to this year, but still. Instead of teams wanting to showcase their stars, now they need to question the risk. If Crosby (or whoever) doesn't go because they want rest, whatever. It just gives an opportunity to someone who wants to be there.

I haven't heard, but I wonder if Price taking part in the Young Guns game is because he has backed out of the Skills Comp...but they (the League) still wants him there on Sat night.

You guys act like Crosby is the first guy to skip the all-star game to mend bumps and bruises. Sid isn't the one that needs to grow up, kids.

This isn't about Crosby, as much as some people want to make it look that way. It's about all of the guys bagging the game this year. Lidstrom, Datsyuk and several guys in the young stars game. The only one that I don't have an issue with is Backstrom as he played in the young stars game last year and was slated to play in it again this year.

Carey Price deserves a lot of credit for volunteering to play in the young stars game as well as the being the starter for the all star game. It seems like he "gets it".

Well, besides the fact that Price doesn't deserve to be there, sure, he gets it.

Now, if Komisarek could just develop some bruise that keeps him from the all-star game.

Doctors advised Crosby against playing in the game as it can further injure his knee. Granted, I wanted to see Crosby in the game, but I cannot argue with him following the advice of the team doctors and training staff.

I understand Crosby's position and most GMs positions. Which do you want more: a Stanley Cup, or MVP of the All-Star Game? But on the other hand, I also understand the marketing side of things. If the NHL was really concerned about player's missing the All-Star game because of worry of further injury, how bout making the ASG after the playoffs like the NFL does with the Pro Bowl? That way, players can or will probably play a little more physical since there aren't any more games. Only problem being, it'll be in the summer.

If you have an injury that makes playing impossible...but allows you to go and do the off ice stuff...I think you should.

I think it is unfair to suspend an injured player who chose not to come this year....unless they told them ahead of time that attendance was expected even if they couldn't play.

An uninjured player how just says "no, I don't want to go..." fine, suspend him...but, again...that rule wasn't in place prior to this...so that rule should be in place next year.

Carey confirmed on TSN tonight that he is sitting out the Skills. Bob and Carbo asked him to sit out the Skills if he played in the YG. But, in the end the decision was his.

This is absolutely rediculos, i can't believe Bettman is considering suspending injured players, if they physically can't play why should they be forced.

I read somewhere that Bettman had told the players what he expected for the ASG weekend, about their attendance, before the season started. Did he just issue a statement, or has it actually been a rule since then? I'm only asking, but that's what I thought I read, that it was a rule.

My understanding was it was a 'rule' as of last year.

I don't see what the big deal is. If you are injured, fine, you still have to come do the off-ice 'festivities'. I think it's a reasonable compromise.

Boy, did you pick the wrong point of comparison.

The NFL pro bowl is a joke compared to the NHL ASG. More guys blow off that than the rest of the ASGs in the other major sports combined.

The other problem with moving the NHL all-star game to after the season, players from the teams that didn't make the playoffs and were bumped in the first couple rounds of the playoffs have already scattered around the world. Good luck getting them to return to an NHL city 2 months after their last game to play in such a meaningless event.

You know who watches the probowl? Yeah, no one. Had this discussion in the shop awhile ago when there was rumbling about moving the probowl to mid season. Most of us admitted to not knowing there was such a thing as the "pro bowl" until our early twenties. Everyone know about the MBL all star game, anyone that knows hockey knows the all star game, and in my experience, people who are huge football fans, dont care about the pro bowl.

If he's injured why should he have to play? He rocked up to the game, acknowleged the fans and did his bit. I think giving Datsyuk and Lidstrom a game penalty is a joke too.

I don't think he would have drastically improved the game, the players who were there can all put on a show so what's the difference?

My 2c

Lids and Dats aren't being punished for not playing...they are being punished for not showing up and 'acknowledging the fans and doing their bit' (as Crosby did).
