OUCH, is there an MSH Doctor in the house?

Recommended Posts

I was playing in my adult leage last Wednesday and got hurt.

I was on Defense, it was at the end of the first period, and the guy with the by far hardest shot in the league takes a slapshot from about 7-8 feet from me. My left leg is turned out leaving the inside of my leg vunerable. POW. The shot hits me just above the skate and just behind the shinguards. Of course it hurt like hell, but I could still skate, so thats what I did. I figure I will have one hell of a bruise the next day...no biggie.

I am in the lockerroom after the game and I pull my socks up to take off my shinguards, and I see that the white felt tounge on my skates is all red. I hurry and take off my skate, and see that my ankle wrap and socks are SOAKED with blood. Me and my teammates are starting to get a bit freaked out. I pull off my sock, and I swear to god, it looked like a gunshot wound. It was literally a HOLE in my leg about the size of a quarter! Blood stated to just run out of it all over the floor. So I take my sock and tie it tight around it to try to slow the bleeding. I figure you cant really stitch a crater in my leg, so I went up to the rink bar for the usual beers.

The problem is that it bled for THREE DAYS! First day it was pure blood. Next two days the blood seemed to be diluted with a clear discharge, and after a week it now looks infected and doesnt seem to be scabbing over too well.. Has anyone been hit by a puck so hard to where it actually puts a crater/hole in your body? and do I really need to see a doctor, or will they say what I think they will say....."hmmm, yes...that IS a hole in your leg....nothing you can do about it now!"

I could take a picture if there is a doctor here that wants to see it :)

So you have a "crater" in your leg and don't immediately see a doctor, wait a week until it looks pretty well infected, and then post on a message board?

If you are not pulling our leg, get your leg to a doctor today. If it's healing up, you probably still need some antibiotics for the gnarly life forms that crawled in off your skate, shinguard, or the puck.

Basically yes. What can a doctor do? Cant get stitches for a crater. I used Hydrogen Peroxide to clean it, and bacatracin (sp?) to keep it from sticking to the bandage. Changed the dressing twice a day. Kept it open to the air for several hours a day.

Would a doctor tell you anything different?

I hate going to the doctor as much as the next guy, but I'm pretty sure if I have a hole in my body that resembles a "gunshot wound" I'm getting my ass to the doctor. Even more so if it's an infected "gunshot wound."

You can't seriously asking for advice on this can you? You know the answer. Nice brag post though. :P

Haha, that's awesome.

They probably won't stitch it up for you now, it's too late. It's pretty easy to tell if it's infected though, and it almost certainly is. A doc will maybe show you how to bandage it up better, and give you some meds to fight off the infection. If you hate doctors like I do, google search on how to properly clean a wound, and do it yourself. If you start to get a fever though, it means the infection is spreading and you could be in real trouble (not advising this course of action, just I know some people hate going to the doc...myself included).

I've never heard of that though, that's crazy.

edit: Didn't see you had been cleaning it regularly...I mean it's not real hard to Google what the symptomes of a bad infection are, if you want to monitor them yourself, then just do it. That's what I did the last time I got cut bad. The only thing a doctor would be able to do for you now is antibiotics to fight off an infection.

LOL...I wasnt skating naked!

The sock was still intact over the wound. I think it was a blunt force trauma wound. The puck must have hit on an edge or angle bursting the skin open, and the force just pounded a hole in my leg.

It just seems like a wierd injury and was wondering if anyone had a similar experience.

It wasnt infected before a couple days ago, and it is only red about 1/4" around the wound....something you would see around a normal cut.

Only problem is my PCP is not in on Friday, and I really dont want to go to an ER.

I am not stupid, and I understand everyones advice. I truly thought it would just heal up in time, but it seems that it might be a bit more serious that I previously thought.

The pain isnt really bad, and I can still easily walk, skate, and run.

Oh well.....not really looking for definitive medical advice on MSH....just bored

gangrene

–noun 1. necrosis or death of soft tissue due to obstructed circulation, usually followed by decomposition and putrefaction.

gan·grene

n. Death and decay of body tissue, often occurring in a limb, caused by insufficient blood supply and usually following injury or disease.

This might be the next reason to get your little crater checked out. Where was your wife the three days you were bleeding?

Eric dude, go to the freaking Doc now.

What can a doctor do about a quater sized whole in the leg? I should hope more than you can do.

Blood flowing for 3 days, no scabbing, possible infection, and your asking for MSH Medical advice.

I would have been at the ER that night.

I think most guys would probably have done what you did by carrying on playing, but certainly infection risk is huge with all the crap you can pick up of the bacteria preent in nasty sweaty gear.

I once had a weird thing grow on one of my fingers, looked at first like a pimple, so when it popped on it's own the next day i thought, gross...but it will go away... two days later my hand and arm started swelling...I went to the ER and the doctor said he couldn't identify what was wrong, and Dr. House wasn't around you know...

so I sat on IV Bag of anti biotics for that evening and then went back for two more IV treatments in the following days to get rid of it.

The Dr. said I probably picked up the nasty infection through a small cut or abrasion from my hockey glove.

Docs are there for a reason.

Not to mention his idea of a bandage is a dirty filthy sock, swarming with bacteria! Add on to THAT the bacteria that could have/did get in the wound from his hockey equipment, which as we all know, isn't exactly "fresh as a daisy"!

I am not stupid, and I understand everyones advice.

Really??? Oh, I beg to differ! Your actions after this injury certainly indicate otherwise.

Lets take a step back and relax here people. I have had far worse injuries. Gangrene is a little dramatic. I am going to the doctors now as it looks that my treatments arent going to hack it. No biggie. Just thought it was a great story. Lets all put things back into perspective. I have a boo boo. Im going to get it fixed now.

A\Its all good :)

And if you don't have that Checked out and Fixed, it could lead to even more Serious things that she could have to deal with.

But it does adequately describe your response.
