OUCH, is there an MSH Doctor in the house?

Recommended Posts

As others have already said, you need to get it checked out asap. Something similar happened to a friend a while back... we were snowboarding and he went for a rail, missed, and landed on the edge of it w/ his shin. He thought it was bad but could still move it so continued to ride for a while, it wasn't until we stopped or lunch that he realized his sock was soaked w/ blood (same story as you), he had a quarter sized hole in his leg from the impact and it was oozing blood. He went and got it checked it right away and was given some dressing and cleanser for it and had to clean it and change the dressing 3-4 times a day to prevent infection. His healed up pretty well and he was back in the park the next week. I only hope for your sake yours isn't too badly infected at this time, just get it looked at and take care of it for a bit.

Feel better man.

Just got back from urgicare. Doctor said that it was infected. He gave me a tetanus shot, and a shot of antibiotics, as well as a script for oral antibiotics. Cleaned it up and wrapped it up, and sent me home.

It definitely looks better after the nurse cleaned it up, but here is a pic anyway.CIMG4207.jpg

I can't believe you waited 3 days to go to the doctor. Some types of bacterial infections can require amputations or be deadly in a matter of hours, and who knows what kind of nasty bacteria were on your sock.

DUDE! You must hate the Doctor or you have had some crazy wounds. That shit is nasty!

Hope you have a full recovery!

I guess I honestly underestimated the injury until it got infected. The Doctor said this injury was more difficult to treat because it wasnt healing...which was due to the "crater" type of wound. As you can see the hole still hasnt scabbed over. It is just filled with this whitish stuff.

The doctor said there really isnt anything I could have done to get this type of wound to heal any better than what I did....except they would have given me something to prevent the infection. I have had injuries that make this look like a paper cut....I guess that I just didnt think it was a big deal. I have no issues with doctors...I just felt too busy to go for something that I felt was minor at the time. I was wrong, and will get proofessional care sooner next time. That is why I pay for health insurance, right?

Jesus Christ, man.....I hope you get better soon. That looks nasty (and painful). I know how it is having a pregnant lady around and it's demanding as hell but hopefully she'll give you the benefit of the doubt and let you take it easy for a week or so.

Worst case scenario....your sock, gear etc...maybe has staph in it..etc...you develop septicemia from an infection go into shock get vented, trached, peg tube the whole 9 yards. Gas gangrene(clostridium), necrotizing fasciitis.

Just spent two weeks in hyperbaric training for wound care, etc...worst scenario was a UConn basketball player who developed necro fasc(flesh eating bacteria) after getiing an infected carbunkle on his ass.

This hurts like hell, but in a situation where you can't get standard medical help for a wound of this type:

Clean it with alcohol, or whatever you have handy. In the case of this hockey wound whiskey would have been fine. Get a knife and heat the stove as hot as you can get a burner. Let the blade of the knife lay flat on the burner until the metal is as hot as possible. Then press the blade of the knife to the wound and hold it down for as long as you can possibly take it. The heat will coterize and disinfect the wound. Of course, if you can get regular medical attention it's a lot less painful, but this will work and could save your life.

how did you manage to not have any bruising?

Brusing occurs when blood vessels break under the skin, in this case the skin was open and the blood has somewhere to go. Hence, there was no brusing.

I was actually wondering the same thing. There were some scabs from abrasions around the wound, but they healed up and fell of after about 5 days. I have some bruising on my foot where the doctor said the blood from the swelling settled. But yes, no bruising. Perhaps this type of blunt force injury doesnt bruise.

I guess that answers that

At least some good will come from this situation b/c after reading Hooah4's post, I walked to my car, got my bag, brought it to the basement, washed the clothes/compression gear in hot water and gave my gear the Lysoling of its life. I'm scared straight :o

not to scare the crap out of you - but read this article:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/01/...putated.brazil/

this supermodel got a nasty infection (albeit not a leg infection) and had to have all kinds of stuff amputated.

i like to think i am tough as the next guy - but when something other than blood starts coming out of your wounds you are just asking for trouble

Sound like the doc was reading the forum and had your diagnosis already in hand. I was going to mention infintigo but I didn't so he didn't. B)

Not sure if you followed up, but she ended up dying.

Check your shin guard..make sure it isnt missing any plastic. Did the puck hit a strap/belt piece? In my experience, crater wounds from a blunt object such as a puck are from the projectile bringing some sort of debris with it.

For someone who is OCD about his skates, I'm surprised you didn't take care of your leg immediately. Good luck to your wife with the baby. Your hockey career goes on sabbatical in two weeks anyway. You will have plenty of time to heal. I know she said it's OK for you to play after the baby is born. What she said and what she means are two different things, though! I hope you were listening. closely.

I think you are under the false impression that you know me, as you have made some incorrect assumptions.

I did take care of my leg immediately. I compressed the wound with an extra dress sock that Ihad in my bag that was clean to stop the bleeding. 5 minutes later one of my my teammates then gave me a first aid kit from the rink from which I took some anti-biotic cream and wrapped it with steril gauze and wrap. I thought that would be fine until I got home about 1-1/2 hour later where I used hydrogen peroxide and bacitracin. I think I did OK....I just waited too long to see a doctor.

My hockey career (career.....LOL...not quite), my current adult league season continues well into March. She never said it was OK or not to continue playing after the baby is born. There is nothing for her to approve or deny. She realizes the importance of this activity to my physical and mental health. We are quite aware of the time requirements of a new born as this is not our first....both of us dont need to be there 24/7. But I can play hockey 1-2 times a week without any issue what so ever. Heck, two days later I am back working full time...plus we have mother and mother in law seperately for a month visiting to help. Even at the injuries worst, I still feel fine to walk, skate and run....I will be playing my next game on Monday.

Even though you are off base with my particular situation, I appreciate your concerns, and thank you for your well wishes. I do appreciate it :)

I thought the same thing, and the next day after the injury, I put the equipment in place and saw the injury was in one of the only vunerable spots that were open. I also checked the equpment for any damage, and other than blood stains, it was all fine. :)
