So, crosby is 11-23 on faceoffs (48%), had 0 points, was -1 for the night, and the team lost.

How exactly did he get the 3rd star?

Yeah, I thought that was odd...

the guy cant shoot, he cant hit, he cant even win faceoffs... all he can do is pass and ball punch. lol I would love to see how his malkins and ovechkins numbers match up if the second assist is taken away.

I know it was done in Crosby and Ovechkins rookie year by some Caps fans. It basically took a way a fair amount of pts from Crosby. He is good no doubt but how he got the 3rd star last night baffles me as well.

Let his actions speak for themselves instead of the NHL and Pens fans trying to cram Crosby down everyone's throat.

It's still not as bad as Mario getting an assist while being in the locker room. I was in the building for that.

Seriously. It's not like Ovechkin is being under-promoted because of Crosby. About the only thing that makes Crosby seem more prominent are the Reebok commercials, and that's only because Ovechkin's English still isn't quite there.

I wish i could have found the numbers on secondary assists, but no avail. I weighted a goal 1.5 and the career numbers ended up OV 477, Sid 423. Its just the uneducated hockey fans with their hardon for crosby that hits a nerve. Look at cids numbers and his goal production has dropped every year, never hitting 40. I wish he would shoot more. He had a 2 on 1 last night with the defender out of position and the other penguin trailing a good 8 or 9 feet. Any other player would have shot, but he does almost a 180 just to pass it. I think hes embarrassed to shoot.

Where did the Montréal Canadiens Thread go? I'm sure it was right there!

Excellent point, sidebar discussion split into new topic.

You mean those same uneducated fans who voted him for the Lester Pearson award?

Crosby's goals per game is 0.45 and it's remarkably constant in each of his 4 seasons. That's higher than Jerome Iginla's by the way, and he's twice led the entire league in goals. The kid is 21 years old, give him a break, we haven't seen his best goal scoring years yet.

Crosby also averages 1.33 points per game, Ovie averages 1.29 agame. If AO had all the attention like crosby has now, and Alex was made out to be this big. Would people complain about him? Would they bitch how Crosby doesn't get enough attention? Take Crosby out of the spotlight, would the less pressure mean more points?

Count a secondary assist as .5 see what you get. Goals and seconds assists are NOT worth the same, contrary to the score sheet.

And as for the Lester Pearson award, that was his best season to date in which he led his team into the playoffs for the first time in a while. He deserved it. This year.... no so much.

Sometimes the play that keeps the play alive and leads to a goal is a better play than the one that gets the primary assist. I'd rather see both assists worth 1pt and goals worth 2.

You rarely see a phantom goal, you commonly see phantom assists.

You guys are crazy.

Poll every GM in the league as to from a strictly hockey perspective whom they'd start a franchise with. I guarantee Crosby is either first or second behind Ovechkin. Personally I'd take Sid just because while I think OV is a better player right now, I can't believe he is going to last more than another 5 years playing this style. I could see Crosby easily playing at a very high level into his late 30's or even 40's.

I love watching AO. I used to love watching Crosby, too, but I think he's missing some jump. I'm wondering if he is really health. In fact, it seems like he hasn't been healthy for months going all the way back into last season.

In any case, I think comparisons are tough to make right now. Ovechkin has to get a substantial playoff history before a full comparison can really be made. The regular season is one thing, and the playoffs are something altogether different. The pressure to lead on and off the ice tells the tale. Overall, Crosby's playoff performance impressed me, but there was a point at which I thought he lost his team. Let's see how Ovechkin deals with adversity in the playoffs. I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here, but Crosby has only played in, what, 5 series? Loss to Ottawa, then winning three in 07-08 before losing to the Wings in the finals? I would hardly call Ovechkin needing to match that "substantial".

Groin problems never really seem to go a way

the amount of space Crosby opens up and the chances he creates with his speed and intelligence is what makes him so good. He is by no means a sniper, so i don't understand why people expect him to be able to shoot like Ovechkin. That's not his game. He's more of an in close scorer. He's able to put himself into position to create the scoring chances that he does, and he does that better than anyone. It's a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.

I love how Ovie gets brought into every convo just because Crosby was mentioned.

The question was what did Crosby do to deserve 3rd star that game?

Answer it seems is nothing .....

It is possible for a guy to have a great game and not show up on the score sheet.

Crosby got the third star because he was by far the best Penquin in that game...
