Cheap F'ing players in beer/rec leagues....

Recommended Posts

This is why I like the AHA policy, someone reports a ringer, they go and watch a few games, then if they are a legit ringer the team gets told "move up a level or lose him"

The sad thing is that the rest of the team belongs down a level but this guy belongs up a couple levels.

So considered as a whole with the ringer and the lesser players on it, where does the team belong ? That's the real question, isn't it ?

There's more than one reason why a guy might choose to play on a particular team, and skill level is just one. Maybe a bunch of his friends or family plays on that team ?

You can't consider it as a whole when one guy is the team. When the guy is capable of making his way through an entire team any time he wants, he doesn't belong in the league. He had no friends or family on the team when he joined it and I have been told most of the guys don't like him, they just put up with him so they can win.

Got one to contribute about cheap sons of bitches.

I'm playing with a bunch of guys in a local Police/Fire charity hockey tournament. Its a consolation game, neither us or the other team made the semi's so it should be low key. They are sorta a weaker team and we handled them pretty well. All was good the whole game except for their goalie. He is extremely incensed to be loosing and is letting every one of our players know when we get anywhere near him. Blocker to the head, stick to the back of the legs, poke to the back of your skates to take your feet out from under you, whatever he can do. The crazy part is that he is a minister. The guy who runs our team plays on the crazy goalies team in a mens league. Crazy goalie also plays out and is even dirtier without the pads on. After cheap-shotting someone, he returns to the bench and my buddy asks him, "I would have thought you'd be a little more mellow being a minister and all". Crazy goalie turns to him with a dead straight face and says, "The lord does not take the ice" and goes back to watching the game. They come in all shapes and sizes.

Was that guy profiled in the USA Hockey magazine a couple of years ago? I swear there was a write-up about a goaltending minister in Chicago who was affiliated with the FD a while back.

One game last summer season 2 minutes into a game after scoring a goal some guy on the other team hip checks my leg, hyperextending my knee, which is already damaged from years of play and several injuries for which I regularly wear a brace. Mind you with most beer leagues, this is a no check league, I'm left unable to stand for a minute or so. Later he tries to hit me again, then starts talking shit, everybody on my team is getting frustrated with this guy, his team included because apparently he was new. He tries to hit me again, I figure next time he has the puck I'll hit him and shut him up, nope, keeps talking, so by this time I've had enough I already have a hat trick for the game, I punch him in his cage, he keeps talking. Later after a face off play is stopped shortly after and I'm just standing there only the top hand on the stick waiting for play to resume, he comes by and lifts my stick with his right into his face, falls, waits for the ref to look at him and then acts as if his face is hurt(like I said earlier, he is wearing a cage). The ref then decides that I must have hit him in the face on purpose, I'm ejected from the game with 5 minutes remaining along with a 30 day suspension for "Intent to Injure", even though the rest of his team saw what happened and their captain tried to discuss it with the ref.

My first game back happened to be against the same team, their captain came by to apologize for what happened and after that game the individual was removed from the team.

While you got screwed bad, you shouldn't have fucked with him like that. He would have been tossed off that team soon enough without you trying to get him back.

If a guy purposely comes by and hurts my knee the next time he is close to me and I perceive more foul play I'm ripping off his cage and giving him a crimson mask. After reading most of these stories the MO seems to be there are guys who take a lot of shit and don't do anything about it. If you don't want people to fuck with you, play cheap with you then you need to set examples on the ice that not only can you take care of yourself if you need to but you will do so very willingly. That means being ready to be hit at all times, being ready to defend yourself at all times and lining up opposing players from time to time. Scoring hat tricks is great but there is a lot more to playing hockey than working on your slap shot. Complete your games and nobody will fuck with you. If you're all finesse you're a target.

Maybe he was old and didn't like the youngster taking the puck from him.

The guy was in his 30s as far as I could tell, I was 22 at the time. The whole game the guy just seemed to have something personal with me from the start, being the first game in a while I just wanted to take it easy and play, but he just wouldn't cut it out, at least he's not around anymore. I'm not the type of guy that takes shit and I can handle myself and usually I do attempt to set examples, I am 5' 9" 200lbs and can play a physical came if need be, but being a beer league that I'm paying for I usually don't go out of my way to earn suspensions for fighting.

Nope, this was in Connecticut

And all these stories are from beer leagues dad. It's a violent game. I play in no check, no fight ice leagues but when I step on the rink I realize there are men who don't always follow rules.

I kinda see where Tikk is coming from. I don't think he is advocating going out and looking for trouble, or throwing hits and starting fights. How I interpret his post is there are going to be dicks and cheap players in every league. You need to learn to be aware that although it is a non-check league, not every will always follow that rule. It's better to assume you will get hit and be able to protect yourself, than to assume you won't be hit, and suffer the consequences when it happens.

Also, be able to spot these players early, and maybe take a pro-active approach the next time you play against him/her.

Glad i'm not the only one that complains about all the cheap players out there. I had a guy take a baseball swing at my head last week just for using body position/muscle to steal the puck from him in the corner! The same guy....head-butted me 3 weeks previous (he's lucky 3 of his teammates jumped on top of me before the refs)....after he whacked my goalie in the head after a puck freeze. Idiots....

I can't wait to play that team in 2 weeks..... No more chances for him/them...I'll just drop the gloves and GO.

Yes, add to the issues that plague Beer Leagues. It's been discussed numerous times, report him and take the proper course of retaliation.

Therin lies the problem with beer leagues. In society you would get jail time if you swung something at somebodys head you were upset with. It's up to the refs to see a guy trying to tomahawk chop somebody and suspend the guy for, say, 5 games. Instead, nothing is usually done, these guys run amuck in leagues until there is somebody who is nastier than they are who beats the snot out of them. Then you get suspended. My only advice is make it count.

I read once in an interview of people who go on Jerry Springer who said the same thing, "Yeah I knew when I got the call I was gonna find out my baby aint my baby or something like that, but at home I'd get arrested for throwing a chair at him!"
