Running Shoes

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any advice as to how to deal with pain in the tendons just below I guess calling it the 'ball' of my calf is the best way to describe it. I don't think my running technique is all the great I kinda land flat on my feet than push off but I can't figure out the whole 'be on the balls of your feet' thing.

I believe so. I believe it's just "runner's knee", and like I said, never causes an issue outside of running. I did have several surgeries done on the knee as a kid when I had bits of broken glass stuck in it from an accident, but I have no idea if that affected it or not.

And I'm fully aware that I'll never be a marathon runner, just want to get a few miles in a light jog a few times a week.

The strap hockeysc23 recommended worked when I had it. Mine was a bigger issue with the knee but the support certainly helped with the pain.

Asics have a lot of good shoes to choose from, you'd probably need a wide in Asics. The Nimbus and 2130s are pretty good values, premium Asics like the Kensei are going to cost near $200. Very comfortable shoe though.

I picked up a pair of Asics a couple months ago and I love them. They're a bit shiny for my taste but very comfortable. I found that they had a wider fit than most of the other brands that I tried.

I did get orthodontics in high school for my flat feet. That helped some major knee pain back then.

He put braces on your feet? :)

Don't knock it until you try it .... the ladies dig it.

As for Asics. Once you find out they are the brand for you (if) then watch for Dick's or Sports Authority as they usually have the Nimbus 10s last years model on sale for 79.99.

I got fitted the first time at a running store and they were 164. I now know I love em and get backup pairs at Dicks.

Cool, I'll definitely check out those knee straps. I have been working on my landing since I tend to smack the ground, so I'm trying to do more of a heel strike then roll down the foot. For whatever reason these shoes I have now tend to smack on the outside and not roll inward at all, so it's another thing that makes me wonder if I got a bad fitting. When I watched the Olympics, the runners tended to have this ridiculous looking shuffle, and if I try and do that (place the foot more under my body than under its corresponding side) I can run further without the pain.

I find Asics wider than Nike but not as wide as New Balance... purely speaking in general. Some are going to vary in width; the Air Monarch for example, is rather wide for a Nike shoe. Adidas and RBK tend to be the most narrow, if you don't count Puma.

It's just like skates, everyone needs to try them on.

Yeah I know I can't fit into anything by Adidas and Puma. I'll head down to the shop and try on some more this weekend. Thanks for all the advice guys.

Exactly

There were a few NB that were marked as a wider width but the others still didn't feel right to me. Even from one model to the next I've seen pretty significant variations in fit with the same manufacturer and that brings us back to trying them all on.

Are you referring to the Air Max shoes you have shown in the "kicks thread" or the Air max 180/360 running

Im talking about Nike's signature line, more specifically the AM2009/360. The only thing that really stands out about them is the cushioning due to the tremendous uncaged air bubble. At $140-160 they hit for, they should be better all around. They have improved on the previous version(s), i'll give them that.

I rotate between Asics Kayano XIII, Asics Evolution IV, and Free 5.0's. All 3 being well under the AM2009/360 pricepoint. In some cases, about half the price.

The AM2009 is a wonderful shoe for the gym and maybe even light running. Anything beyond that is pushing it, you should probably look into models from Asics, NB, and/or Mizuno.

Even some of the same model fit slightly differently. There was a seam in the Air Max 360(first gen) that kept me from buying them and there was only 1 pair of 13s at the store, so I settled on the 180s... which were fantastic.

Off the top of my head in Nike, there are a few different fits... The Air Monarchs(III) are wide and deep. The Pegasus are narrower. The Turbulence is a pronationer's dream. The Air Max 180/360 are wider than most Nike but not as wide or deep as the Monarchs. Then the rest of the Aim Max series is completely different, in every way. You have the Air Edge Trainer, which puts you waaay on your heels and is narrower in the toe. Then various crosstrainers and running shoes within each brand are different for different uses, different body-types and different pricepoints.

It's just like skate shopping but more options and you can "skate" down the isle.

...or you could try Kinesio tape. You can use it for runner's knee, shin splints, plantar fasciitis... an application can usually last a few days.

Wow thanks for that info. I had seen people with that on their calves but had no idea it could be used for the Patella. I usually go without my straps in ice hockey cuz they slip down. Maybe this will be a good solution.

Thanks!

You could go see a sports med Doc. They may recommend something better like orthodontics or a brace or something. (Not that I should suggest such things since i have what is probably a ligament strain/sprain and I haven't been to a doc in years.)

I did get orthodontics in high school for my flat feet. That helped some major knee pain back then.

MY sports doctor who actually is very popular forget his name (he's helped pro teams) suggested painkillers for my knees/quads...

oh and for the shoe thingy i have wide feet and i run in saucony's there amazingly light and comfortable.
