Hockey Giant started charging actual FedEx shipping costs

Recommended Posts

They used to charge like $4.99 on orders over $150 (we're talking ground Fedex). Then they went up to flat rate of $16. Now I hear they have been doing actual shipping charge that FedEx charges them. Anyone knows anything? Or is it for bulk buyers only?

Please share your experience.

I'm sure they have an account with FedEx like other major companies do (the actual shipper doesn't matter, for Dell it's been Airborne Express)

$4.99 for orders over $150 or $200.00 ended over a year ago. They then went to flat rate shipping of 10.99 for orders under $75 and 12.99 for orders over $75.

Now they have a shipping table that is based on the price of your order (shipping ground not air). The least you will pay is $10.99 and the most you will pay is $16.99.

Customers who buy in bulk and receive huge discounts usually get stuck with different shipping charges than what is listed on the site. You can't ship 100 hockey sticks for anywhere close to $16.99 no matter how good your rate with fedex is.

Anything under ~3 pounds print a shipping label under $5 no matter the size, it slides up from there in increments (meaning a 4.5lb box is the same as a 4.8lb box but not necessarily a 4.4lb box). Even a 20 pound box only gets up into the $15 range or so.

I work for FedEx so my only advice is to look around for other sites that offer free shipping. No way I would pay $11 for shipping a jock or something-you're wasting your money. And believe me the people who deliver those packages are not seeing an increase in pay, typical big corporation greed that goes into the suits pockets.

at least they're not as bad as Monkey charging handling and oversize fees on top of their already inflated shipping costs.

Aye, believe me I got no love for the giant but HM's shipping/returns/exchange policies are complete insanity, if you dont get what you want the first time with those people, they have you over the barrel and trust me they dont have any lube handy.

Yeah, I usually avoid the Giant Monkey unless they got some killer deals. Otherwise I just buy from my LHS or Ice Warehouse.

Totally agree... but I just bought a One95 shaft from HG, because I had a hard time finding one in stock anywhere for the past month. Shipping was 10.99 on it, btw.

Hockey Monkey's 10% off coupon codes make it worth it though in the end... just edging out other online companies that have less expensive shipping/handling charges.

sorry if it's a noob qustion, but where can you get those codes?

have fun with HM's customer service

and make sure you get the right thing the first time because as stated before, they'll have you by your balls when it comes to return shipping and restocking fees.

I am considering ordering a pair of skates from them, shipped all the way to Europe, so I really don't want to spend another 80$ on returning them. Should I reconsider ordering from HM or go with IW, and do IW have coupon codes?

I've switched from Hockey Monkey to Ice Warehouse. Shipping is free after you hit $100. The twitter5 code helps too. Hockey Monkey charges more if you spend more, which doesn't make me want to spend more. The IW customer service was great both times I called. No restocking fee and up to 365 days to return items unused.

if you have to buy online avoid hockey monkey like the plague. i'd gladly pay $100 more on a item at a lhs. hockey monkey and the people who run it are the scum of the business world. IW on the other hand is quite the contrary, a model of the way online shopping should be...

thanks for the heads up, I was actually thinking ordering from monkey since they have smaller shipping fees than IW (80 compared to 100) and I found a coupon for 10% off YSMSAVE10, but I think I'll go to IW now and spend a little extra but I'll be sure I'll get a good thing, if you say so. Since I'm ordering from Europe my only fear is of factory defects like misalligned holders and stuff like that, because if I send them back I'll have to pay again for shipping and again for duties and taxes, because the postal workers are jerks like that

TotalHockey is by far the worst if you ask me. I have ordered 4 things from there and only once have they ever actually had that item in stock. (swedish stick handling ball) Their Prices are usually higher then other places if you ask me. My friend had some trouble returning a stick that was cracked at the heel when he got it.
