pg-1000 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2009 Considering that this is the first game Spain have lost since November 2006.From Wiki:They had been undefeated for 35 matches in a row after they were defeated by Romania in a friendly match on November 15, 2006 until they were defeated by USA on June 24, 2009 in the semi-final of 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and they had won their last 15 matches since a 0–0 draw (4–2 win after penalties) against Italy on UEFA Euro 2008. fawn111 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2009 Just think if USA had even a percentage of it;s best athletes playing soccer..... the world would never beat us....For sheer athleticism there is not a country in the world that can cultivate talent like the USA.... sure pure athletic ability does not translate into winning on the soccer field, but imagine if LeBron James started playing soccer at age 5 instead of basketball.... now imagine him playing forwad and going up for a header on a corner against brazilian defenders.... at his hieght and leaping ability.... unstoppable. pantherfan 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2009 The US is waaaay down on the list of athletes produced per capita but I see your point on "soccer" being less popular. Heres hoping for a US upset over Brazil but unless S.A pull something big outta the bag I don't see it.

nickyb13 9 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 In my opinion Canada's best player is Dwane De RosorioAs for Team Usa that I can think of... Donovan, Dempsy, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Ching maybe? I dont know if Demarcus Beasely or Freddy Adu are still playing or not.Edit: forgot to capitalize
Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 I think their dominance of Euro 08 put that to bed...Lets not get carried away, Greece has won a Euro Championship afterall. Look at the domestic league quality, their National team players and how they have never won a World Cup. The Highest they have finished is 4th at the WC in 1950! They are very much still the underachievers.

fawn111 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 What? We have a soccer team?Hardly anyone in the USA other than the latin community really cares about soccer. I have several friends that are fans, and they always tell me that soccer in the USA will be big... HUGE one day. I tell them, when Football, basketball, and baseball go away, then maybe kids will get interested in soccer. NEVER GONNA HAPPEN

cptjeff 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 Yeah, all I know is Donovan and Howard.I honestly think soccer would become a lot more popular in the US if they just switched to a hockey style offsides rule, or perhaps changed it so that the normal offsides rule doesn't apply once it's in the goal box or something. So many great scoring chances and plays are ruined on plays that seem like they should be valid.
Fire0nIce228 1 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 The states just got mls in 1996. They are expanding year after year and will grow to 18 teams in 2011. Soccer in the US is growing and will continue to do so as more and more people immigrate to the country. 15 years from now, yea it's gonna be huge. It already gets more air on espn than hockey and as Americas talent pool grows and our international play gets better the fanbase will grow.
RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2009 I went to a Seattle Sounders FC game a few weeks back, I was actually quite surprised at the level of attendence. They didn't sell out Qwest Field or anything, but I have to say I suspected it would look like an NFL Europe game, and not the case.

This is why hockey and soccer do not do well in the US.

This is why hockey and soccer do not do well in the US.It's also interesting to note that bringing in David Beckham had about the same effect as when the NASL brought in Edison Arantes do Nascimento (Pelé), which is to say not much at all. I do think Americans today would probably be more open to soccer than they were in the 70's, if for not other reason then having a much larger Hispanic population now. But it's never going to threaten football or baseball, both sports are much more TV friendly. Which is how most people see the games.
