Best visor?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm new to the boards, but I've read them for a while. I've got a CCM 692 helmet, and am looking for a solid visor to go with it. I had the Itech HS22 Wave, but it was cracked in half during a scrum. I've been looking at the Oakley Aviator, but I'm worried it covers too much (if that makes sense).

Is there a consensus among you guys on which visor is the best in terms of protection as well as durability? I know every visor is going to get a scratch or two, but which ones are the best?

Thanks guys!

How in the world would the Oakley Aviator "cover too much?"

It is not even a half shield, but a visor.

I have the Oakley Aviator style visor. Coming from wearing no visor, it didn't take long for me to get used to it. In fact? It covers plenty to where I don't have to worry about a puck coming up into my face and I can recall about 4 or 5 times where this visor helped deflect high sticks away from my face which would have resulted in nasty cuts if I were using the straight cut pro style visor.

Without a doubt the Oakley has done the job thus far. One thing though... You bring up that a visor is bound to get scratched... The Oakley visors tend to be more prone to receiving scuffs from having the visor uncovered in a gear bag.

This is just my 2 cents. But remember I haven't used any other visor before. Just this Oakley aviator style cut visor but I am very satisfied with it. If you do wind up getting it? cover the visor when putting the helmet in your bag to avoid scuffs :)

By cover too much, I mean come down low on my face. I understand it's not going to cover everything, but I was concerned the sides would come down too low.

I really like my Oakley visor. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which model it is, but it has a straight cut and ran me around $70 at Pure Hockey. A little water/shampoo and it gets almost no fog, although every couple of shifts I wipe it down with a towel I keep on the bench. It's taken about three or four high sticks and doesn't have any deep gouges or cracks. The scratches it does have I can look through without any problems. I think it's worth the money for sure.

My last two shields have been Itech HS22 straight clear. I love it. Easy to care for and good visibility. Plus it is generally a few bucks cheaper than the Oakley version and is just as good quality wise.

ye i use itech most of the time since its cheaper...and i like the extra curve of the visor ( compared to the rather straight visor | of oakleys, since i use tinted it keeps a bit more light out from sneaking in the top

I have the VR910, I'm pretty sure it has the most coverage of all the Oakleys.

I must say I barely even know I'm wearing it...in fact it comes down so low that the bottom of the visor doesn't get in my field of vision. You may be surprised how unobstrusive it is.

I went face first into the post at full speed with this visor on and was glad to have the coverage.

As for durability - the only scratch I have is from smashing into the post - it is visible when you look at the visor, but completely not noticible when I am wearing it.

Hope that helps -

K

Thanks for all the help!

Also, out of curiosity...how many posts does it take to access the Gear Exchange forum?

I use an Oakley straight cut. It covers my eyes and goes down to the tip of my nose. I know what you mean about 'covering too much'. The bottom edge of the visor gets into your visibility and the airflow to your face is cut down. Besides, nobody likes the guy in the welding mask.

And to answer your question; 75 quality posts, if I'm not mistaken.

Roughly. It's at their discretion.

^^^Quality is the key. Some knuckle head just resurrected a thread on Barnaby's skates from 2004 for no apparent reason other than to pad his post count. Don't be that guy.

As far as visors, The "Malkin" style Itechs are just about indestructible. There are much better options as far as optical quality, but durability wise they are hard to beat.

Yeah, I've noticed the Malkin visor is cheaper than all the Oakleys, but I'll be honest, it doesn't look as cool. I know it's not the most important thing, but I'd prefer an Oakley or a different Itech if I'm shelling out the cash for a visor.

the Itech X-100 or DX-100 are also great visors. When you buy the hardwear and the single visor it will cost you a fair amount of cash but, after that you can get 3 replacement visors for about 70 bucks (Canadian). I've had my X-100 for a season and a half and the only mark I have on it was from a very hard high stick during a junior game.

Bauer Fugly, that name seems pretty appropriate...

Yeah, it's nothing personal to Bauer/Itech/whatever company owns the visor now, I enjoyed my HS22...but MAN is Malkin's visor ugly...

So now that we've discussed everyone's visor preferences, anyone have a spare visor they're willing to sell me?

What is the Malkin visor model called?

The Bauer Fugly! :D

They don't look bad if the vents are dremmeled off and you have the pro cut model (think Luc Robiltie) - I rocked one of those back in the day when the options were pretty much that or an RBE 1.
