The NHL Retirement Thread

Recommended Posts

Yeah, but unfortunately with everything that has happened with him, it's a safe bet he was among the victims. But at the time of the trial, he wasn't a high-profile NHL superstar. The assumptions at the time pointed to Sakic. Regardless, it was quite a traumatic experience being on that team.

i see only a short span of time until he's doing work for TSN.

I agree, but TSN has lots of talent already. One of the US broadcasts could really use JR.

I love JR as a player but every time he has been on TV in a broadcast capacity, he has been terrible.

"terrible" as in not a professional broadcaster....or terrible likw no one wants to hear what he has to say...I think the times he has been on TSN have been very good. Candid, funny...insightfult.

He did the world cup last time around and was terrible. He wouldn't shut up, went off on tangents and was really, really loud all of the time. Ten minutes of game play would go on before they could actually get back to the action. A good analyst is concise and efficient while being colorful. The first two are not his strong point. That said, he's a great interview and has probably improved since last time I saw him. Plus, he couldn't possibly be worse than PJ Stock, who had to have pictures of someone screwing a chicken in order to get that job, let alone keep it.

I really liked his playing style. Every game I saw him play in he competed hard.

Then, there's that water bottle throwing incident that is still being copied by petulant coaches.

Equipment-wise, he was one of the first to pioneer tapered shafts (aluminum Easton).

I've never heard him when he was doing play-by-play, but as an analyst on TSN he had some pretty good insights.

I'd use him as a studio guy...not in the booth. Analysis...criticism...comic relief.

One of the highlights of "Next Question" (OTR/TSN)

Landsberg: "No names, but did a teammate of yours ever sleep with another teammates wife?"

JR: "Ab-so-Lute-ly!!!!!"

I enjoyed having guys like him and Bret Hull in the game because they called it like it was and the game needs those personalities.

He should start off in the studio then hit the booth. Looking forward to seeing that forsure.

I really didnt mind it at all. I think a commentator going on tangents doesnt hurt at all when there related to the game. Sure he wasnt great by any stretch of the imagination but he also doesnt do it for a living. I think with a big of experience under his belt and someone showing him the ropes, he could be effective. Hes a pretty funny and colorful guy who had a great career and knows hockey , I think given a chance he could do fine. He has 'inside' experience from recent nhl which differs from a lot of them who never played at the nhl level or havn't played in years.

Do you think Easton will rename the Sakic curve? What will they rename it? My guess is Toews...

I hope they dont rename it right away to honor the mighty Joe.

It would be hard to change it before the 2010 line comes out.

Always sad to watch one of your childhood hockey heroes end it for good. Hope the guy moves on with his personal life and can do as well at it as he has at hockey. Thanks Joe.

Rather than new thread everytime someone retires...let's keep 'em all together.

Jason Smith hangs them up:

Solid defender. Good Captain. Leafs should've kept him!

Decent player but extremely over-rated by the Canadian media. Obviously he wasn't at the top of his career when he was in Philly but he was average, at best.

I had no idea Phillipe Boucher had played that long...

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=289832

Might as well go out with a Cup and a Ring!

I was sad to see him leave Dallas, and now sad to see him leave the game.

And I still say the Sydor-Boucher trade was one of the worst we've ever taken part in.

In Philly he had lost a step. Not being fast to begin with, that killed his game. When he was in his prime he was a solid 2nd pair defensive defenseman who would skate through a brick wall while killing a dozen kittens to win a game.
