QFT - they're beauties. And he still insists on having the stays run through the face of the pad, and absolutely cranked down, because he likes the face to be concave. There was a great shot a few years ago, back when the Sabres were in black/red/white, that showed how dramatic it was through the thigh.

I got to try a pair that Bauer made for him just after the lockout, and they were lovely: all the advantages of a modern butterfly pad with a nice flexible body. I ended up getting something similar made for J.S. Aubin, but Miller's were gorgeous. The amount of work that goes into them, as compared with a stock RBK, is just staggeringly huge. There probably aren't many guys left who can do that, apart from Lefebvre, and maybe the Woodstock boys.

Are those based off the Supreme line?

No, they are based on Heaton 10s if I'm not mistaken.

I can't think of anyone who has actually used real X-Pulses in the NHL. Miller's, Toskala's (also H10's...Law?), and Brodeur's are all something else with the X-Pulse graphics.

isn't the supreme line pretty stiff? kinda like P3s or am i just making this up? vapors the flexible bauer pad

It is now, yes. I think it's actually based off the Itech XR series, though I haven't seen them in person. In the past, the Supreme was a traditional pad.

Ahh yes, you've got me there.

Miller's are H10's, as are Toskala's; Broduer's are still the same old D&R Quantums with a few touch-ups. The original Supreme Pros (which DC pictured) and Supreme Pro SE's have some similarities with the H10, but they're closer to Koho 580s; Bauer did pitch pads to several Heaton/CCM and Koho wearers, including Miller, all of which were variations on the Supreme line (to answer Oykib's question from a different angle). Fabulous pads, if you ever see them floating around.

Incidentally, I believe Marc Denis also wore genuine XPulses at one point.

The original Supremes are very, very flexible, both in the vertical and lateral. I can twist the knee of mine to almost 90-degrees to the shin, just like an old deer-hair stuffed pad. Later models got progressively stiffer laterally, but have remained relatively flexible in the ankle, knee and thigh. The Vapor was... a disaster. All the disadvantages of modern and traditional pads with none of their advantages - and heavy as hell.

In the new line, the One pads are a pure box pad, but with a good degree of flex through the thigh and knee; the X:yy line are a little more traditional and curvaceous - rounded gussets, rounded toe as opposed to tapered, wrap-around knee-rolls, etc. - in addition to being more flexible throughout.

I think JR can verify, but I'm nearly certain I saw a pair of Denis' x-pulses in person.

eric staal

you'd think bauer would set one of their poster boys up with a new set of 4 rolls, eh? i also find it interesting that they don't make any attempt to cover up the swoosh on the stick.

He has 10 pair of new Bauer branded gloves in the equipment room. They've been there since August. The team had some NBH eft over and force him to wear those until they're gone. That's what teams with bad budgets do...

well, you'll be pleased to know he wore bauer branded 4 rolls tonight.

Yeah, and that pair is now in the concourse as a mannequin. They needed some equipment and I gave them those pads.

That's too perfect. No living human should have to wear those.

Thank you for all the info. Pads sure have changed. I went from the Vaughn 3500's (I had the whole set including the crazy blocker), to a pair of 8600's. All I can say is WOW what a difference in pads. I had to change my style of play due to the changes, but I feel it was worth it.

If it wasn't for that wider side roll I would swear those were my old Vision pads.

It's funny - that's exactly why I went with those pro-return Supremes. They were the closest thing I could find a traditional pad (lots of vertical and lateral flexibility, rounded medial gusset, rounded toe, deep-ish boot and leg channels) with modern 'amenities' like hard Jenpro-covered knee- and calf-wings, a nice thick knee-block, thinned thigh-rise, overall lighter weight, etc.

In retrospect, I do wish I'd taken your route and grabbed a genuinely new pad. I had my eyes on some NHL-spec Sherwood C-10s for a while, but I just couldn't get a good feel for them. Those were crazy pads - think little planks about 1/2" thick all the way up, absolutely flat on both sides: weighed nothing. I think, in the end, they were just a little too minimalist.
