My S9 Helmet Split at the Temple!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I know there isn't much I can do about this but I wanted to see if anybody else has had this happen.

I bought my S9 when they first came out so, I've only had it about a year. I play in a non-contact league and haven't taken any head shots since I've had the helmet (sticks, pucks, etc.). While I was packing my bag yesterday for my game I notice that the helmet has split at the left temple just about at the point that the plastic starts to curve to form the front of the ear guard.

Now, I'm disappointed that the helmet didn't hold up longer than it did and I'm wondering if it has happened to anyone else? Also, I don't remember hearing about any quality problems from Easton but, I could have missed it.

Maybe I just got a bad one. Now I have to decide if I want to chance buying another S9.

DSCN1485.jpg You can see the split at the "elbow".

DSCN1486.jpg Here the split is just above the Itech sticker.

Most helmets have a 1 year warranty, I would recomend changing it either way warranty or not. Your head is not something to play around with.

Maybe you shouldnt be getting in fights with Jason Allison ;)

Same thing happened to my Mission Intake. My fault. Overtightened the screw on my cage support. It cracked at the area at the forehead. Still have my S-17 though so I'm good. Going after the Cascade M-11 for my next helmet. I like what I've seen on the reviews.

I do wear a visor but I didn't think I over-tightened. Maybe I did. Lesson learned if that is indeed the problem.

I'm still extremely disappointed because I waited for Easton to put out a helmet for so long and now I don't think I'll chance another one.

Bauer 5100 perhaps.

This happened to me 3 Bauer helmets in a row (not sure what model now). However it was the part where the screws to adjust the sizing towards the back of the helmet. I am sure it was not just overtightening, as it happened 3 times in a row, so now I own a S9 Easton.

I have had the S9 lid for over a year now, with a Bauer cage, and haven't had any issues. If the S9 fit you as well as it fits me I'd try one more, especially if you have any doubts about how tight you screwed on the visor.

Odd, do companies give any torque specs for helmet screws? Witht he price of some of these buckets, I think they should start.

Even if they did, virtually nobody has the equipment to measure it. When was the last time you saw a torque screwdriver? And when was the last time you saw a torque spec for a screw on anything?

I have the same helmet and while changing out my visor for a cage, I noticed that area started getting a crease in it and I was worried it was going to break. I am pretty sure I didn't overtighten the screws because of all the warnings. I think it is just the design of that area (combined with visors). That "tab" part seems pretty flexible and weak.

Try using spacers next time. It looks like you attached the visor to your helmet without spacers.

IMO spacers will save you the headache of the plastic splitting like that.

I would agree, spacers allow the visor to keep its manufactured shape whereas if you don't use spacers you run the risk of having to bend the visor to make it fit to the helmet which in turn puts pressure on both the visor and the helmet.

I used spacers and it looks like the OP did too, if you look closely at the second picture.

most likely 4000 bauer had a major problems with spliting at the holes for quite some time. thats the reason it was changed when rebranded as nbh

A different issue but same helmet: I picked up a pro stock S9 helmet off of ebay and was attempting to change the screws on the back to dome snaps for a cage, but was only able to get one of the screws that come on the helmet removed. The other one just rotates when you try to unscrew it, I assume something that's holding it is stripped but I'm unfamiliar with the way it's anchored and wanted to know if someone could suggest a fix that wouldn't compromise the safety of the helmet?

Its probably the backing. Whats the screw mounted in? This happens a lot, just hold the back with your finger or if its really tight either use another screw driver or pliers depending on if u can fit a screwdriver in it.

I always use spacers. They're on there, just hard to see under the tint.

Just an update. I tried repairing the crack but, to no avail. It cracked again as soon as I tried to put the visor back on. I have since picked up a Vector 08 and attached the same visor. We'll see if this one holds up!

I used a torque screwdriver the other day, but your point is made. I was thinking a torque wrench, but it wouldn't be that precise.

The female end on the inside of the shell seems to be mounted between the grey vn pad and a thin sheet of plastic attached to the pad, I'll try to upload a photo of it tonight
