The 2009-2010 Suspension Thread

Four Games:

Can't say I disagree...but it does call into question how they arrive at some decisions...I've seen worse get less...and less get more.

Ben Maxwell called up from Hamilton. I guess I know why now.

Is it the right call? Yes.

Is it consistent with what they've been calling? No.

Sharks defenceman Dan Boyle had a similar view.

"There was, as far as I'm concerned, a really dirty hit on our guy." said Boyle. "Pushing a guy from behind into the boards, I have not seen the reply yet, but you can paralize a guy and there is no place for that in hockey."

Ok...but then this happens and no suspension...

This league is just ridiculous now. Volchenkov's hit on Cammalleri was borderline, he's been out for a month now, this is what frustrates Habs fans right now. Lapierre definitely should be suspended for what he did, I'm all for it! But I guess if the coach or players don't come out and say "that guy should be suspended because our guy could've died or paralyzed blah blah blah...", nothing's gonna happen. It's pretty pathetic.

You're right, Spacek was just bleeding from the head and couldn't get up. He should've held his arm for a bit then get up to fight the guy who hit him, like Nichol did. Then Markov should've complained to the media that Powe could've killed Spacek and then maybe the league would have suspended him.

I though Powe should have been suspended, there were a couple questionable hits in that game. That said, that hit was nowhere near as bad as the one on Nichol. If you want to compare a similar hit, let's see what Ryder gets for the hit on Comeau today.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is no suspension on the Ryder hit. There just zero respect anymore

Suspension and respect aren't related in any way.

Boogard gets two games for one of the most obviously intentional knees I've seen in a long time, "because he is a repeat offender". Isn't that the same suspension they gave Ovechkin for his first offense?

Haha Dan Boyle...... And that Powe hit wasn't nearly as bad as the one on Nichol. Spacek looks over his shoulder and sees him coming. The injury was because he tried to turn away from the hit.

That was a pretty awkward hit but i don't believe that deserves a suspension.

probably going to be adding matt cooke to the list of suspensions - he just layed out marc savard like the richards/booth hit - although not quite at that high of speed

If Richards wasn't suspended I don't see how you can suspend Cooke for that. Same exact thing.

How about because it's the right thing to do and they made a mistake in the past with Richards.

I don't condone the hit. I fully expect Cooke to get some games for the hit. I dont like hits to the head which this obviously was, so don't get it twisted because I'm a Pengins fan. I'm just saying, its the same exact play as Richards/Booth and Richards got nothing. Whether they made a mistake or whether its the right thing to do is irrelevant. Everyone should be held to the same standards until they formally make a change and add a headshot rule or whatever.

I agree but we both know the NHL isn't exactly very consistent with all of it's rulings. I'm sure Cooke will get some games regardless of what they did with Richards/booth.

Good news is savard only has a concussion but will be spending the night in the hotel with a team doctor.

Well Cooke does have some previous suspensions, most recently on Anisimov (sp?) of the Rangers earlier this year. IMO the hit on the Rangers player was much much dirtier than the hit on Savard. I'm watching an intermission show of Flyers/Leafs right now and this announcer guy is saying that Cooke elbowed Savard, and theres a NESN writer whom I found with a 2 paragraph thing about how Cooke elbowed Savard viciously. I don't really see an elbow. Looks like he keeps his elbow down and his arm in to me. Yeah he definately hit Savards head, and thats bad. I'm just saying, the league doesnt have a headshot rule in place, and they've let this same type of play go unpunished previously this year. I'm positive Cooke will get some games, probably alot because its Matt Cooke and he has some history.

Its like, I know its a bad hit and it SHOULD be punished, but because of the rules that are currently in place and the precedent the league has set with this type of play prevously this year, it really shouldn't be.

true. Hopefully the gm meetings will set a fine line in place. Hate to see gifted players get hurt in the stretch, especially considering a concussion will probably have him out at least 2-3 weeks depending on the severity. Any one wanna venture a guess he's out for the season?

Definitely not an elbow. He kept the arm down and no follow through and didn't leave his feet. Like you said, since Cooke has a history he'll get some games.

I hate the hit, not only because I like Savard & hate to see anyone hurt on a cheap play like that, but also because Cooke's been playing his best hockey lately and it was just stupid.

Different, but same situation with this hit. Cooke will get suspended, and should, because of his history of being a f*****g prick.

I rarely use bad language on this forum, but this guy is a joke.

I hate both guys but...come on, that should be a suspension. Just like the Richards hit should've been a suspension. Even if i hate both those guys, you never want to see a player leave on a stretcher, it's a GAME. But yeah, Cooke is a major douchebag.

Pretty nasty hit by Cooke.

Was it late? I dunno. Was it necessary? Absolutely not.

Cooke will get a spin on the Wheel of Justice soon enough. Seeing the recent decisions by the NHL, he'll get anywhere from 3-5 games...or win a brand new car! Who the f knows.

While that's all fine & dandy, the part that really makes me think handing out suspensions is a joke is that the teams are not penalized or held accountable for the actions of their players on the ice.

So Cooke sits a couple games and forfeits a couple game checks - what do the Pens do? They call up a serviceable winger to fill in for the time being and all is well. No real punishment as Cooke is an interchangeable part. A better example of this lunacy would be Boogard and Cam Janssen. Those guys play what, 4-5min a game tops? Is the team really at a loss? No. But if they were a roster player short...then it might sting a bit.

What I'd like to see from the league is punishing the teams by cutting the team's roster 1 player short for the duration of the suspension. That should piss teams off. Handing out suspensions to 3rd & 4th liners isn't going to do shit. The way to enforce clean play is hold the team accountable as well as the offending player.

What do you guys think?
