Need New Shoulder Pads

Recommended Posts

This is my first topic but have been reading Modsquad since it was Corebeam. I am looking to get a new pair of shoulder pads very soon but have no idea what has a good rep now a days. I currently use the old blue Coopers (super throw back) but they just aren't doing it for me now a days. I am looking for something just as light if not lighter but also need more protection. I'm also looking for a good pair of shinguards as my old ones are falling apart and tanks (super heavy)...... Price really isn't an issue.

big fan of the new rbk shoulders, don't know about the shins, but avoid the elbows at all cost :)

get the 10k if protection matters, get the 8k if you want something more low profile

For shoulders, I like the Farrells a lot...light weight, flexible, breathable, protective enough for a bunch of NHLers. A few things to know: 1) they run big - I'm 5'11", 165-170lbs, 40" chest and wear a small; 2) by themselves, they don't protect the abdomen like most of pads out there; and 3) there are two different styles - H600 (Black) and H500 (White). Below is a bit of info I got from Farrell about the differences between the H600 and H500.

"There are a few differneces in the two styles...The H600 is a bit lighter, it also has tripled layer CBT cubes meaning three different density layers of foam which disperses a little more impact...The H500 is made of single layer CBT cubes....

At the end of the day , we have 122 NHL and AHL players in our shoulder pads and it is 50/50 with the two styles..."

I like the Easton ST-series because of the low-profile shoulder caps. On Icewarehouse.com they have some videos showing them off, and you can see how much smaller the shoulder caps are than other brands. The ST4's are a nice pad for the price, and the ST16's are absolute tanks. High density foam with plastic inserts, it's practically a bullet proof vest, but still really mobile. Not that heavy either.

I've been using the reebok 10k for about 3 months now and I love them, they move with you and feel really nice. They are not as low profile as some of the others out there. I'm really happy with the 10k. If you want something that's really low profile go with the ccm vector 10, I had them before the 10k. They are also pretty good

Thanks alot everyone... I'm headed to a couple local shops today to see what I can find. Also do those padded shirts that some pros wear actually do anything?

Yes. They reduce the pain when you're hit in the padded area, either by a player or with a puck or stick.

They're not necessary, but some guys use them instead of shoulder pads in beer league.

I have the pro defenders and like them a lot- take the caps on and off as I see fit.

And, FYI, MSH isn't corebeam 2.0.... two separate sites.

I just got the Bauer One75 shoulder pads and I like them a lot. Very comfortable, adjustable bicep position, but a little bigger than I really like. If you're considering RBK, I'd maybe look at their KFS stuff. I tried the 9k pads that some places are still clearing out and they're HUGE. You'll look like a football player or the big kid that's on the pee wee squad. As for shin pads, I'm looking for a new pair myself. I've had luck with all of the Bauer supreme line so I've been sticking with that for most of my equipment needs.

As far as shoulder pads go if you're looking for protection both the ST16s and the V10s are both great options. They both fit close to the body without coming up and off as you skate, and take a lot of of hits and stick/puck contact.

I play a very physical game and I sprung for the ST16s after a weekend that left me sore as all hell, and haven't been sore from hitting ever since. They also don't feel too bulky or heavy when they're actually on your shoulders either. Only problem with them is the sternum protection ripped off the front after a couple weeks... just used some tape and a lace to fix it up though, no problems since.

I've found that the RBK 5K and Sherwood 5030 shins have lasted me a long time. I love the feel and fit of the Sherwood's, but the white padding tends to stain after some time.

I'd go with the RBK 5k..Great shins for the price and as for the shoulders, who knows? I never wear them. I just wear a padded shirt akin to what football players wear.

I'm looking for some new ones too. I play in a non checking adult league so I'm looking for something small but protective. I'm looking into those Sher Wood 5030 or Bauer lace up throwbacks. What do you guys think of those?

+1 to the Rbk 5k shins, they are great. I have had mine for 3 seasons and had first gen Rbk 5k's before that, i would deff recomend the 5k shins. I also had the Nike Bauer One 70 shoulder pads for a couple seasons and they were great, just replaced them with some Jofa 8800.

In your oppinion is it worth the extra money over the 5030's or the lower end bauer lace up's? I am looking at picking up a pair of pro-defenders myself.

I had originally purchased the lower end Bauers (classics I believe?) and could not get over the giant shoulder caps. I've personally never worn the defenders, but I picked up the Sherwoods and much prefer those for my mens league stuff.

Good to know!

I had the classics before the defenders and I hated the big caps. If I ever play in a game where I feel like I need caps, I can add either of the two replaceable ones. I really enjoy the arm extension on the defenders as well.

The knock on the defenders is the length. As with anything else, try it on before buying to be sure.

EDIT: and the defenders have become so cheap you can most likely pick them up for a price close to the classics and get a much better piece.

+1 for Farrells, especially for non-contact leagues. That is, if price is not an issue...I love mine for non-contact and they do well in contact as well.

For beer league you can just take all the plastic plates off and it's like wearing nothing.

Very good to know. I was going to go with the Bauers over the Sher Wood based on the look alone. But if you're saying the caps are too big then no thanks. I'll grab the Sher Wood pads instead. I'm using some real old Bauers with big shoulder caps and I can't get used to them.
