Best skates ever

Recommended Posts

When I was around Bantam age, I was given a pair of original Roos. They were the heaviest tanks ever, but after an excruciating break in, they fit my feet like slippers. Awesome skates.

Now, I wear U+ Reloaded. They are almost as comfy, but half the weight with way more support. I'll call it a tie though....for nostalgic reasons.

Of the skates I have tried, my Bauer 6000s have been the best so far (once I re-broke them in, they were used).

I am hoping the (98) 5000s I got will get a similar feel once they break in.

In terms of fit and performance, my favorite skates of all time are the one90's. I've skated on several high end models from every major skate manufacturer out there and nothing compares. A close second are the Micron Mega Air 90's. I never had a pair, but I wanted them when I was a kid more than any other piece of equipment that I've ever had. The mix of black and white looked so awesome when I was ten. Coolest skates ever.

For me Vector Pros, Vector 10.0s, and U+ Pros, I really like the recent CCM skates, they are just perfect for me, or at least as close to perfect as a retail skate can be for my wierd feet.

Bauer Vapor XXX's. They are and will remain the best skates for me. Have been using them since 2005. I have 2 pairs in boxes...for whenever these break down. I hear the X60's are quite similar (but lighter) though.

Not gonna talk about the skates I learned to skate on,I'mm 44 and I've began playing in the early 1970's, been officiating since 1990.... I basically get about 2 years (or 4 sets of runners) out of a pair of skates. The skates I've used are listed below in order of my preference and a few notes about them.

1-Daoust Supernational 501 -2 pairs- level 2 stiffness, longer tongue, custom size, wish I could still get them... bought by Canstar before I could order my 3rd pair. Canstar ruined them! Tuuks.. tried the V2 blade on them. Had no problem sharpening the V2, just didn't like the feel of it when skating on it.

2-Daoust 301 - Perfecta Blade (wish I could still get them)

3-Bauer Comps - level 2 stiffness, longer tongue, custom size, Black then White Tuuks

4-Graf 707 - Extra stiffness, longer tongue, custom size, Cobra's

5-Bauer Supreme 100's - standard comercial boot - white, and later Black ICM blade - loved the steel in the black ICM's white ones were softer and didn't hold an edge... still have 2 pair of black ICM 296's around here somewhwere - one pair New never mounted.

6-Micron 1090 Mega - standard comercial boot - Tuuk, later swapped to Black ICM blade

7-Micron Gold Medalions - Stock Comercial boot, White ICM

8-Original ROOS - Stock skate before bought out by Cooper, decently stiff, SLM blade was swapped to a Perfecta ASAP

9-Bauer Supreme 96 - Stock boot, Clear tuuk (broke 3 sets of clear holders)

10-Lang Molded boot with ankle hinge and steel tubular blades Circa early 1970's

11-CCM Tacks with original Prolite tubular steel blade - skates have come a looong way from these old puppies... you'd be surprised just how light the Prolight tubular blade really were... the boots are what were heavy..

12-Bauer Vapor xxxx (*Current skate*) - Baked twice and still not comfortable after 1 1/2 years. Did I mention that I really miss how the old stitched leather boots formed to your foot and felt like slippers? Litespeed2 - may swap out for Cobra's 'cuz I like them better than Tuuks.

13-CCM 1052 - Extra stiffness, longer tongue, custom size - Prolite3 later swapped for LiteSpeed1 - hated the stiff tendon guard 'cuz it interfered with full foot extension at end of stride... again, even with heating and custom boots the damn things never got to the point of being "slipper comfortable"...

My next pair of skates? Maybe another custom Bauer if I can get together with a sales rep that fits customs for the pro\college teams I have not had good luck just letting an authorized dealer place the order. If not, then I'll be going with Grafs... maybe a custom 735 or something similar....

I guess it is kind of unfair since my only skate experiences are rentals or the only pair I've purchased, which are Bauer Vapor X:40s - they fit me great & feel great when I am out on the ice so I'll go with them as my favorite skates.

Like Zebra Steve, I'm 44 and been playing and coaching since the early seventies and I've seen all my Dad'soldgear going back to the late 1940's. I've seen it all and Steve has a pretty darn good list here. The one comment I would make is that heat molding and composite materials have almost required the Best skate ever discussion to be held for pre-heat molding mostly leather and nylon era and post heat molding, composite materials era. Back in the day, Great skates were the usually the toughest ones to break in, but a perfectly broken in leather boot was like butter & guys would do almost anything to make them last another season. We had to invest a lot of ice hours to really make them "our skates". They were very personal belongings. Nowadays, skates fit pretty good right out of the oven, so players don't have to invest so much blood, sweat and blisters to have that personal broken in fit.

I love the lightness and stiffness of the new skates, but I miss the professional craftmanship of the old classics.

i have to say the best pair i have ever had were a pair of pro-stock bauer 7000's. My one 95's are close, but not the same. also loved my gold bauer 5000's i had before the 7000's. those skates died a rough dealth. liner ripped, padding fell off the back. finally broke the outsole and trashed them. and what i would do to be able to skate bare foot again. just can't do it now

My favorite skates of all time were the Micron Medallic golds with a Tuuk holder - I skated better on those than anything since. I'm on Easton Z-Airs currently but I want to get some Graf 709s.

I have a pretty fresh pair of pureflys. I just need to get some formula steel or swap holders bc some simpleton ruined my steel beyond repair.
