Chris Chelios hockey equipment

Recommended Posts

I went and checked out a Marlies game last week and Chris Chelios was playing for the opposition. I noticed he was still wearing those old skates, what CCM model is this anyways ? Is it 652 Tacks ? How many pairs can he have left ? Being up so close I could tell he doesn't have very much protective equipment underneath, particularly his hockey pants.

Last I saw a couple years ago in Detroit, he's been wearing the same shoulders and girdle since college.

The girdle is similar to the old CCM classic black model (before the blue model that's currently available) and is all sorts of stitched up. It's very possible it started as a Cooper girdle (his particular girdle is grey) and had CCM-type pads put in at some point.

The shoulders are basically the Sher-Wood classics, but obviously older and more worn. Unsure of the actual brand and whether or not they have any padding on the back. They might be the model with the two loops for the strap to go behind the back and button up on the front.

Does CCM make them for him because I did a close up of the pic and they look to be in pretty good shape.

When you're someone like Chelios or Modano, companies are probably willing to make you whatever you want. Same with Selanne and his Jofa helmet.

Thats often not true, look at Brendan Shanahan and Easton killing his favorite stick, and to a lesser degree, Mike Green running out of CNT's and not being able to get more. I can't imagine CCM is hanging onto a mold of decade old skates for two players. The stars probably had a situation in the late 90s when CCM was ready to move on, so the stars orderred a huge bulk of modano's skates and stored them for him before they killed the mold. Probably why he still had those easton gloves for so long up until a year or two ago.

Wrong on the gloves... skates... I dunno. Drew would know more than I would.

I read somewhere that before chelly went to camp a few years ago he had to take the wheels off of a pair of skates he had and mount steel on it because he couldnt get the skates anymore. I wonder if he just keeps getting his skates repaired or if CCM is actually making them for him. On that note, he had 9k's last year in the winter classic, no pumps and no lace-lock.

I'm surprised to see him wearing a visor.

I just read the rules and realize the AHL requires a protective visor. Interesting.

I thought there was a grandfather clause for guys like Chelios?

I think they were talking about that for the NHL ?

Anyhow, visor or no visor. Chris Chelios can flat out still play. I thought he would be marginal at best given his 47 years of age (48 in Jan), but his skating is still really good. His passion and desire to win is second to none. I was watching him practice and he was one of the last players to leave the ice. He kept on looking for team mates to practice his passing and skating with. Its a pity most of them are quick to get off the ice. The only thing I can't figure out is how is able to defend and knock down players much bigger than him. At one point I saw Chelios taking on 2 players by himself.

chelios in reebok skates w/pump

i'm also pretty sure that i've seen him wearing a pair of grafs sometime during the past couple of seasons, but i can't seem to find any photographic evidence.

chelios in his shoulders.

He started last season in Grafs, but broke his foot in preseason. He switched to Reebok shortly after he returned from injury.

Broke his leg actually, but we wont send you to the guillotine for that. I was so disappointed when Holland didn't re-sign chelios, with all the injuries he'd actually see a little bit of playing time this year for the wings.

I thought it was time to go, but in hindsight we need the depth at D right now. Then again, we need depth everywhere right now. Zetterberg last night, this is getting absurd, worse than 99.

When Chelios got playing time last year - aside from obviously being a bit rusty from sitting all the time - he was pretty damn good, and still has a ton of offensive creativity. I think he lacked a bit of jump from not getting in-game work, but he's tough to play against for sure.

There are probably a bunch of teams out there that could use him - the Rangers, for instance with their logjam of crappy, overpaid defensemen - but free-agent veterans get the shaft because they gave out bad contracts and are strangled by the 'cap.
