One95 skates cut into my ankle at the top of the boot...

Recommended Posts

I believe the composite shell on the inside eventually compressed the padding at the top of my skates. Now when I wear then them they rip a gash above my ankle bone where the boot meets my skin. I skate sockless.

I don't believe I can wear a sock because that would make by forefoot too tight. I have tried taping, bunga pads and ankle braces. The problem is getting something to stay in place the whole game as any protective covering on my ankle wants to ride up.

The bunga pads worked, but they were expensive and stretched out really easily. They are hard to keep in place.

The ankle braces worked because they go under your heel and stay in play, but the thick seams around the in-step of my foot and the hole where my heel peaks out gives me hot spots.

Any other ideas? The only thing I could think of was to literally glue something protective on the top part of my boot to take the place of the compressed padding.

Cut the forefoot off a pair of socks.

I tried that. The problem is that when you put your foot into the skate - there isn't anything keeping the sock towards your toes and it just rides up. I think I would have to entirely unlace each skate every time to "set" my foot into the boot, but even then - it starts to ride back and bunch up.

wristband?

that would give me the same problem as tape and the bunga sleeves. They start out fine on the ankle, but the act of skating pushed them up higher than the boot, so by the 2nd period I am left unprotected.

I was wondering if anyone has ever gorilla glued the bunga material or another pad to the inside of their skate boot?

Check how you are tying your skates. You could be folding in the top of the boot against your ankle if you're not pulling the laces equally tight on the top 3-4 eyelets.

Nice thought, but I don't believe that is the case. The One95 boot is so stiff, I doubt I could do that anyway. I leave the top eyelet unlaced.

It is definitely the composite shell underneath the padding and the outside material.

Cut the heel off too so it looks like a set of stirrups. There once were hockey socks with that look a long time ago I think.

Hey... now that is an idea! I've butchered many a sock, but haven't tried that variation. The heel was always the problem because that is what always pulled the sock back when I put the foot in the skate.

I may give that a try.

Although I think my preference would be to adhere something to my boot to replace the padding that used to protect me in the 1st couple of months.

There isn't a composite shell inside ONE95. It is layered padding, none of it composite.

Regardless, what I used to do back in the day was cut up a thicker sock, and use it in the same fashion as a Bunga Pad. Put it over my ankle like a sleeve and hold it there with clear tape.

You can also do what Bauer does for their pros (and not a feature on TOtalONE. Get some foam (strong enough to hold a stitch) but you'll need access to an industrial sewing machine, and just layer it over the edge and stitch it. Or perhaps some strong glue...

Try putting a piece of duct tape over the top of the spot on the skate. That might reduce some of the friction. You should keep taping a pad over the spot on your ankle until it heals, otherwise every time you skate you just keep ripping it open again. When you tape it, vertically make it a longer tape job. That way it won't move when you are skating. It should look like a regular ankle taping, minus the foot part of it.

ok, my bad. whatever it is made of - it is a hard piece of plastic underneath the padding. I can feel the edge. It's not the exact top of the boot, because it rubs about 1/4" below that.

I probably didn't do it right, but I tried the taping of the bunga pad and sometimes it works, sometimes not. It was a royal PIA however. Life's too short to messing with my skates endlessly like this.

I think I'll try the glue route. The question is what kind of material. I can glue a piece of bunga pad. Or leather, foam, etc... of course, I have no idea where I would just find the right kind of foam that wouldn't disintegrate with rubbing.

is Gorilla Glue the official glue of USA hockey equipment mods?

I'd do the 1/16" blem for $7.99. That is the thickness I believe they use.

Just wrap it around the edge and you're set.

I think I'm all set. Thanks for the tip!

for what its worth....everyoneI know that skates in these bears the scar,,,,some moleskin ,along with the break in , eventually does the trick . Great skate once you get the kinks worked out. If you note the new model the total one...someone listened, the area is nicely padded.

It could be the tongue that is rubbing into your ankle area. What I did was cut that part of that area out on my one95s. It helped a bit. I also use bunga pads, but with crew socks. You might wanna at least try some dress socks which are pretty thin with the bunga pads. My pads stay put inside my socks.

I've had my one95s for 18+ months and have never had this issue.

Same here. I am starting to have the lace bite issue though. That's annoying.

+1 here

14 months use, no ankle issues, 3 months ago all of a sudden had developed lace bite issues that lasted for about a month, now everything is back to normal :)
