Large NHL Photographs

Recommended Posts

Is there anywhere other than google to get quality hi-res photographs. Google has a limited amount of photos that are suitable to make a desktop wallpaper with. Looking for something like Getty without the watermarks.

So you want large, high resolution pictures that require skill and training on the part of the photographer, and you want them for free?

Don't forget the equipment. Those guys are walking around with around $5,000-10,000 with just one camera and lens not to mention all of the other crap they have to have.

Before you give up on Google..

Google images - advanced search - type a player name in the search box & select size. Should give you a ton of wallpaper size images

He is putting no value on the image despite all of the costs involved with producing it. If you don't understand what is wrong with that, I can't help you.

My point is he's not going to profit he's just looking for some cool backgrounds. Seems like overkill to chastise him over something millions of people do every day. You cant convince me you've never seen some cool picture or something online and set it as your background. IF he came on here saying he wanted to mass produce and sell or something thats different. I understand completely the economics of the situation though, Thanks. Besides, American copyright laws are a nightmare, and there is a little something called Fair Use that would probably protect the OP.

By the way OP, go to the NHL.com frozen moments. See something you like? Screen cap it, open a paint program, paste, crop, save, set as background, voila! ;)

Doesn't seem like any of these apply in this case.

Under the fair use doctrine of the U.S. copyright statute, it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports.

Millions of people steal music every day, does that make it ok? Nevermind, I think I know the answer to that one too.

Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:

The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes

The nature of the copyrighted work

The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole

The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work

We're not talking about pictures versus music, we're talking about intent and effect. In fair use the courts treat each case as seperate based on the circumstance. I think you'll have a hard time getting a court to convict the man in this instance.

You still miss the point about it being unethical. Just because you probably won't get convicted doesn't make it right. Oh, and personal use does not qualify as fair use unless you are making a copy of something you have already licensed. And even then, there have been suits for movies and music but I know you want to ignore the things that undermine your argument.

It would be really nice to get back on topic at this point.
