Wider helmet for boy

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My Son(9 years old) wears CCM 892 helmet, size S, but that is very narrow for him, though it has enough forehead place. I removed ears protectors, but that didn't help. We have not a big choice in LHS, I'm gonna buy new helmet online.

My question is: What brand of helmets has a wider size?

Thanks in advance!

my son's head grew out(wider) so i had to get him a new lid ended up going with a 8500. i liked how i could adjust the width and the octiptal lock in the back. he also tried on hte rbk 6k but it didn't lock on properly.

the best advise i could give you is ask the other dada to try on there son's helmets to see what fits best. the only helmet that is going to work for your son is one that fits properly.

RBK helmets tend to be wider than most brands.

Thanks a lot!

One more question: I use Mission Intake personally and very pleased. I just found one online for ridiculous price $29.99(blowout). Is Mission wider than CCM?

My 9 year old has a very round (wide) head...the bauer 8500 with the occipital lock was the only one that I could get to fit properly.

Haven't tried the 9500 on him.

I have a wide head, and found the same problem with the CCM helmets. I have since gone to a RBK 4k and found it to be very generous in width.

Absolutely agree with this, I had an Itech from ~2003,2004 and last year, after looking and trying all kinds of helmets, only the Rbk 4K fit my wide head

I'll post here instead of starting a new thread.

my son is 18 months, I want to get him a helmet with shield. is 6 1/2 the smallest or is there an option for little little guys? the bauer 1500C in 6 1/2 (22") is slightly too big, it slides down onto his eyebrows. if this is the smallest they get, is putting a toque on first unreasonable to provide some volume?

Wide headed Father of two wided headed boys. Best fit for us was/is Jofa 690 however previous posts are correct the RBK line is the next best fit. I have found the mission intake to be relatively wide too.

You could try the Bauer (Itech) Techlite, if you can find it. It's really light, comes with a cage, and the inside fit is produced by different foam pad thicknesses, like in some bike helmets. If the cage is not important, then an adjustable children's ski helmet could do the trick and be useful for other winter sports as well.

that techlite is nasty. i think i'm going to get him the bauer M10 and throw a toque on his head for volume. he's only about 1/2" to small right now.

The only helmets that have fit my wider head have been the Intake and Bauer 5500/8500...but I like the shallow ones rather than deep helmets.

Do you mean nasty as a really good thing or really bad thing? Kids these days, I just don't get what they're talking about :P

Our Itech Techlite is still my son's favorite helmet, despite being in an RBK 6K now (wide head). I picked it up again last night when cleaning out the basement and it is really, really light, as in almost Easton S19 light (I held one at the MSH skate). I think that's why he likes it.

nasty as in horrible ;)... looks like a carrera ski helmet.

I'm heading up to sportchek today to exchange the pair of bobskates I bought (heel cup shipped snapped off). if they have the techlite, I'll try it, but the M10 with cage looks like a winner.

Just to make sure i am reading this right. You dont like the look of the helmet designed for kids your sons age, so you're going to buy him one thats too big for his head? Really?

correct, but only if the toque application adds the necessary volume. otherwise i'll probably just rent him a helmet until the M10 fits.

I'd go with the Bauer (Nike/Bauer) helmet or a Mission helmet. The RBK helmets are also a nice wide fit. I'd avoid lower end Itech and Easton helmets because they are a slightly slimmer fit. Hope this helps.
