NBC Games

Steigy isn't very popular among the Pens fans around here. I do like Bob Errey as a color guy though. I work the 2-10:30 shift so we listen to the games on the radio. Mike Lange & Phil Bourque FTW B)

She want to sell my monkey!

. They gave microphones to NHL refs for a reason, shut up and let us hear the call.

They gave NHL refs mics to be more like the NFL. The same reason they switched from home whites to whites on the road and darks at home. The NHL was jealous of the attention the NFL got so the decided to clone themselves after it. The jersey switch bothers me more than anything else.

They did the same thing with Mario

Seems though this is more homoerotic though. Might just be me. I really ducking hope Crosby never changes anything on his equipment... but then they'll make a big deal about that, too, b/c he'd stay with old stuff instead of new gear.

Funniest thing also, was just watching pregame, they just said they don't give Crosby ENOUGH credit. seriously? Making a guy look like Jesus' son isn't credit enough? lol.

It does look weird as hell still, right? All other leagues (minor and stuff) wear home whites, stupid nhl wears darks. Typically in terms of good looking, 3rds>whites>darks. Should you look good the most possible times in front of your home crowd?

I miss the days of Dale Arnold and Gord Kluzak on the mic for the Bruins. Edwards drives me up a wall. He makes for good jokes though.

I agree with you about Edwards but Dale & Gord were atrocious. Between Dale's whinny voice & Gord always making dumb jokes. I hate it when he's the analyst with Kathryn Tappen. He loves to bring up how Jay leach ( her husband ) is doing.

Dave Shea wasn't to bad. My all time favorite quote from him was from the first round playoff series in the 90's against the Hurricanes. Kieth Primeau had just delivered a big hit and Shea thought it should have been a penalty and says: " Well they might as well let them bring knives & guns if there not gonna call that!".

Thought this might be interesting to read considering how NBC focuses on Pens/Flyers/Rangers/Wings. Although I wouldn't be surprised that regular retail sales of merchandise are very different from that list. Also can we give the whole white jersey's look better thing a rest. The only reason teams wore the white jerseys previously was because after the 67 expansion the NHL figured more people would come to watch expansion teams play if they wore their iconic jerseys. For the most part the dark jerseys look far better than the white ones, and create a better sense of atmosphere.

There is no way NBC focuses on the Rangers at all. I have to watch my Rangers in regular def because Dolan won't give FIOS the HD rights. If theyr'e not on VS. or NHL Network I just have to deal. The other three I'll agree with. As far as the darks looking better that is a matter of opinion and we'll just have to agree to disagree. I guess if it was only because of expansion then we'll have to tell MLB and the (ughh) NBA to switch. I mean who wouldn't want to see the iconic Yankees wearing grey at home?

The reasoning they gave was to provide more information to the fans in the building. As for the jerseys, you're wrong. Most teams have dark third jerseys, wearing dark at home allows them to wear the dark thirds without inconveniencing the road team. It is all about simplifying travel for teams. If it makes you so angry, the least you can do is know why it was done.

I always figured they gave the home teams dark jerseys to make them stand out more on the ice. Which I would like for my team at home to be the more dominate color.

Nope, it's all about merchandise sales.

What about teams that don't wear ridiculous 3rd days anymore. There have been plenty of articles about how after the lockout the NHL needed viewership to comeback and they looked at how popular the NFL is and adopted some of they're ideas.

Color switch actually came the year before the lockout.

Personally, I prefer white at home. But most jersey designs since the Reebok-EDGE-takeover of the NHL are so ugly and uninspired that most white jerseys just don't look that great, so it doesn't really matter.

Now that several teams are reverting to retro designs (which wouldn't need to happen if their original EDGE jerseys weren't so ugly), I wouldn't mind a switch back to the white.

You can't have one set of rules for teams with thirds and another without. Anyone that cites reasons other than dark thirds for the change is flat out wrong. Thinking that it has anything to do with the NFL is absurd. There is nothing about what makes the NFL popular that would benefit the NHL. Games once a week, ten seconds of action followed by 30 seconds of inaction and constant stops in play for commercials would kill the flow that is needed for enjoyable hockey.

I don't know, I think they liked the John Madden/Cris Collinsworth/Troy Aikman approach for color guys who make stupid and inane comments and pepper the broadcast with over the top corny jokes that their partner is forced to fake laugh at.

That's the thing though, football has the 2.5 hours of downtime in the 3 hours it takes to play the game to have someone making stupid comments.

Hockey doesn't, just call the game unbiased, and realize you aren't what people are tuning in for. Leave all the inane chatter for intermissions.

Speaking of inane chatter who ever was the other colour commentator (not craig simpson they had two) on cbc during montreal game last night was one of the worst ones I have heard in a while, he would ramble on aimlessly until jim hughson would eventually just change the subject. On the topic of NBC I think emerick is pretty good, he makes games pretty intense; especially that washington game last week; but ofcourse having mcguire in between the benches knocks it down a peg

If it wasn't Simpson...maybe Greg Millen or Glenn Healy. Guy Carbonneau has been doing lots of Habs games for CBC this year. He's not very good...but, you'd probably recognize his voice.

Yeah it must have been Carbonneau because he did have a french accent I just had no idea he was working on CBC because I only get the Montreal feed when the leafs aren't playing

Doc may not be your cup of tea, but the man is amazingly prepared. He has handled every game as smoothly as if he saw the teams and players every week in the NHL. He doesn't skip names or struggle to figure out who has the puck, it is smooth and clean.

I'd love to see his game sheets. I know the guys that does AHL hockey for us has a ton of notes...and I've seen Al Michaels lay out from when he did MNF. The network guys probably have a lot of spotters and stuff for them too. So, the pxp they are calling as it happens, but penalties, and away from the puck stuff and other notes are being fed to them by notes/computer/hand signs...something.

I've done some of the feeding for ABC (non hockey) a few times in the past. It's his play by play that is so impressive to me, there's no difference between him doing the Devils and Rangers for the 3,000th time and the team from Belarus that has a handful of NHL players that he may have seen before.

Emerick is the Devils regular announcer so thats enough of a reason to hate him. The Msg Ranger guy is Sam Rosen. He also does some football but to me he"ll always be the man because he screamed "the waiting is over!!!" in '94

I get chills up and down my spine when i hear that broadcast and they play it live before the start of every game as like a montage thing

Well NBC might show the same teams over and over, but damn they are entertaining. That Wings/Hawks matchup was great. And Capitals/Blackhawks next week? Yes please. And I think having these games in HD really might make all the difference in the world. Some of the feeds i get on centre ice is like watching a game through tissue paper.

I love that they're in the morning, an there are games going on all day (at least today). Great way to start a day IMO. And yes, they are damn entertaining and look great in HD.

It'd be nice if the NHL always scheduled Sundays like this.

Most broadcasters use the NHL game sheets (here), as well as notes they take themselves talking to players and coaches before the game at the morning skates.

They often link them on the game preview pages on NHL.com now, but they used to be media only. All sorts of fun stuff in there.
