Face off Moves

Recommended Posts

I am getting bored with most of my old face off moves, I was wonderign if any of you had any more moves to add, here are a few:

  • Shoot off the Draw (Offensive Zone)
  • Push the opposing center back, and have the wing come off the boards for a shot (Offensive Zone)
  • Win it softly back, and have either a wing come from the top or the side (Offensive Zone)
  • Slap it up as hard as I can off the draw, and have the wing on that side back up off the other wing, and jet right as the puck is dropped (nutral zone)

These are some pretty basic crappy moves, I was wondering if anybody had any input

I like the tie up the other guy and kick it back. It's usually very effective. Also I like to let the other guy win and cream him off the draw, a la Mighty Ducks (although in the movie it was more of a puch then a hit, but the hit is better).

I stick with the tried and true. Hack down, pivot my ass into his chest and tie him up and let a winger get the puck, then spinaround and go backdoor (not in the Vapor-preferred way) to the net, if we're in the O zone.

What is with all this innuendo in all recent posts. Is this in reference to something unbenounced to me?

I was never good at shooting off the draw... how exactly do you do it? Always seemed too difficult

I try to turn to the side in a shoot position enough so the ref won't say anything. It's a hard thing to master. We have it as a set play on our team and I almost never get a clean shot off.

It is very tough to put it on, with timing it so the other player doest get to it or block it. Its almsot more of a shovel. One time, I just slapped it, and it deflected off the opossing centers stick and flipped over the goalies sholder.

i push the guys stick towards him with my stick, then pull it back. gotta do it right when the ref drops the puck. so he doesnt have a chance.

Being the 8-15 PIM per game defenseman that i was, my only job on the face off, if i ever took one, was to jab the opposing center right on the laces, as soon as the puck was dropped. usually they ended up right on their face.

i feel shame

I go for the easy forehand win and step through the other center for a breakout pass or head to the net in the offensive zone.

when icedog03 is on my roller hockey team we try this all the time at center faceoff circle. he lines up against the left boards since im a right handed shot, then i hit it as far up the left side as possible. and since he's one of if not the fastest kid in the league... yeah, you get the idea :)

ONe of the centers on my old team was pritty good at hitting the puck before it hit the ice.

Which makes it an irregular faceoff. By the rulebook, the ref would have to repeat the faceoff if one player touches the puck before it hits the ice. You rarely see a ref doing it though; most of the refs never look down when they drop the puck so they just don't see it.

In the O zone, I usually try to draw it back to the point off my backhand. But timing is key and I usually know after the first couple of faceoffs whether I have it or not. A lot has to do with anticipating when the ref will drop the puck. If the ref has the same motion every time you can usually anticipate it. If he does it differently or just slams the puck toward the ice it's hard to win cleanly. Then I start reverting to the power moves (lifting the opponent's stick, driving into him and kicking the puck with my skates, etc.)

In the D zone I just try and win it either behind me or toward the boards, nothing fancy.

not so according ot usa hockey though. I actualy asked that question. If a player bats it out of the air before it touches the ice, the puck is IN PLAY, but if the ref accidentaly drops it on the players stick, the puck is dead, I thought what you said was true

This is my first year of playing alot of center, and Im not having such good luck. If I cant win the puck cleanly back or to the side I always seem to just get pushed strait back out of the way and the other teams winger just comes in and gets it, cause I'm pretty small compared to some of the kids I have to face off against. Whats some type of thing I can do to not get pushed back so quick, or like someone said the guy will turn and put his ass into me and I cant do nothin about it. Is there any tips I can do? :(

When I actualy win I usually go forhand and try and win the puck to one of my wingers. I've only ever got one good clean shot off from a faceoff and the goalie gloved it.

Just practice your hand eye co-ordination. Constantly one-time shots at a wall in the air. It helped me, I'm a defenceman and I can win draws against guys who constantly play center. Size has nothing to do with itm winning a faceoff is very strategic; gotta use the right moves against the right guys.

Usually, the center just tries to win the faceoff back bye just cleanly sweeping the puck back. I usually hit his stick in the opposite direction of where he is trying to pull it back, and then i pull the puck back. This works all the time. Its almost impossible to lose a faceoff cleanly if u do this.

If I'm at home and I know the ref, I usually have their triggers figured out a head of time. Most refs will do a little something right before they drop the puck, like put their thumb on the top of the puck. I just try to pick up on these.

keep ur blade 6 inches off the ice or even higher, as in my case it's easier to win liek that and i usually do
