Evander Kane vs. Matt Cooke

Recommended Posts

Kane's tape on his hand seems to go a little past the wrist...

I saw that but It doesn't appear to be in a place that would contact Cooke.

Imagine being on the Pens bench and seeing that. Talk about a momentum killer.

It hasn't been mentioned yet but Evander Kane was named after Evander Holyfield.

According to part of John Andersons post game comments:

Cooke was only going after Kane because he hit Crosby. Clean hit, legal hit. So, if Cooke isn't into the whole "frontier justice" bullshti that has taken over the NHL...it never happens. I know you have to protect the stars...but you have to protect them from guys like Cooke. Kane is a solid 2-way guy who doesn't take cheap shots.

Not saying that I don't think Cooke got what he deserved and Karma is a bitch...

But...why go after a guy for a clean hit. It's so stupid.

actually Kane was going after Crosby all night. a few were clean and a few weren't. at one point I saw (I was there, not watching on TV) Kane try to jack Crosby in the jewels behind the play. the kid (little k) was trying to make his bones before the end of the season. Kane is an exciting player and guys will certainly think twice about messing with him next year. gotta love those WHL boys!

I enjoyed the pic as much as the next guy but in terms of "class", isn't Kane supposed to ditch the helmet b/c he has his visor if he's really doing the old school way?

Or did Cooke start with his on and just get it knocked off when he headbutted Kane's knuckles?

Cooke has refused to take his off in the past and ducks his head down to use the visor for maximum protection in fights.

Here's a timeline of the fight.

0-1 seconds: Kane and Cooke decide to fight.

1-2 seconds: Kane has Cooke's helmet off

2-2.5 seconds: Kane swung and missed.

2.5-3 seconds: Kane knocked out Cooke and had him on the ice.

Neither one was taking off their own helmet or had time to.

Honestly I think the best part is that by the time the camera's go from the play to the fight it's over.

IMHO this is just another good example to ditch the instigator rule. This all started because Cooke decides to go after Kane for making a good, legal hit. This trend of going after someone after a clean hit needs to stop. I'm sick of seeing a guy make a clean play only to get jumped on by one or more of the other team. This is one of those rare time (in current hockey) where someone takes liberties and has to pay for it.

I did like the way Kane handled it. Get down to business, get it done with and go to the box...no B.S. before, during or after.
