Drills for pre-game warmup

Recommended Posts

What do you guys do during the short warm up before game time? Im curious a way to get the stickhandling, skating, shooting and goalie skills all going in one drill. What we have been doing is 2.5 minutes of unorganized chaos and then 2.5 minutes of the standard half the team on each red line then one person goes from the right side of the rink to the blue line then gets a pass from the left person, shoots and goes in the left line. Im sure this has some name but i cant remember it.

What do you guys do for warmups?

We do that drill you're talking about (I dont know the name either), we sometimes go into a 2 on 1 from that drill then we do a half circle with just shots and if there's time left the goalies get out of the net and we go into a butterfly

As a team, in prep for a tuff game, we like to pre-drink 1 beer. Just 1 though. Anything more will kinder our effectiveness on the ice.

Then after the game it's a free for all, for beer that is.

My favorite is the "2 on 1 Banana".

Forwards in each corner on your half. Dmen lined up to the inside of each side.

Dman starts with the puck, passes to the forward on the opposite side, forwards skate up, cross at the blueline and come back on the goal for a shot.

In Michigan, we called that the Wisconsin Drill... and it was by far the most popular warmup drill when I was growing up.

Half-Ice Wisconsin (as opposed to the Full-Ice Wisconsin).

I've always heard this one called "butterfly" as well. The other drill we always just called "corners".

I always liked doing 3 lines of slappers, a half moon, and then butterfly in beer league warm ups.

Ask your goalie what he/she prefers since they will benefit the most w/ a proper warm up, also keep the shots low the goalie doesn't need his head knocked off b4 the game starts.

The OH (goalie), likes to start with the shots from players standing in a horseshoe shape so he can get his positioning sorted. You'll notice he will glove the shots closer to his body, and gradually reach out for the ones at the posts as he warms up. After that, assuming there is time, the players generally do a Carousel.

He definately has a better first period when doing his perfered warmup (long shots) because he plays in different sized nets.

i've always known "the wisconsin" as the "st. louis".

i've been doing the shots from the ringette line, then wisconsin/st. louis drill pretty much every pre game for my entire life.

In amateur hockey with 3 - 5 minute warm ups I always considered it a goaltender warm up so the players were to put shots "on goalie".. don't make him reach or stretch to much, he's still cold and could pull or tear something - Keep them low and on the pads. Don't try to score or do anything that may highlight a weakness in his game. Tailor the shooting to what the keeper needs... he doesn't need to see a bunch of breakaways (well maybe if the D sucks and no one knows the meaning of back checking).....
