Crosby to sign a new endorsement deal with Reebok

I'm sure he won't complain about 1.4 mill, but how much are NBA players making just for a sneaker deal per year? $5-8 million to guys who aren't even top 5 stars...

how much is any other hockey player making on endorsements from hockey equipment manufacturers???

other sports have a bigger pool to tap into, anybody can wear a pair of air jordans, or iverson's shoes... you dont have to actually play the sport to wear the product. you could be in a wheelchair and still rock air jordans... not so much with 11k's

apples and oranges.

That's a fair point. But my reply is fair as well, we need a bigger pool:)

All the power to Sid. Good for him he can cash in on his hard work on the ice.

Me neither...thanks RBK for making my choice easier.

HAHA! I was just thinking the same thing! Well at least his short season gave him more time for advertising!

I understand 1.4 million is not a lot of money but if I was CCM/Easton/Bauer, I would have doubled that offer and do anything it takes to get his sponsorship. As much as most of us would like to admit, casual sports fans only know 2 names: Ovechkin and Crosby and having that guy head to toe in Reebok gear is marketing gold for the ENTIRE company not just RBK Hockey

the ENTIRE company you speak of includes ccm, who has ovechkin locked up as well (rbk/ccm employs the two biggest names in the game). i dont know too too much about the industry with regards to endorsement outlook, but it seems like the brands that grasp for the young/uninformed/impressionable customer try to associate their product with names [rbk (sid), ccm (ovi), warrior (kovalev)] as opposed to brands like easton and bauer, who, although employ athletes, don't build empires and product lines around them.

except Reebok and CCM are the same company. if you have both, you shouldnt make one brand the red headed stepchild. hence crosby on reebok, ovie on CCM.

Does anybody remember when Crosby was ripped on Ovechkin cause of that commercial he mad pretending to be a rock star, and Crosby was complaining saying he prefers to spend his time at the rink instead of doing commercials. That dink is such a hipocrite(sp?) hes all over Reebok, hes all over Gatorade, and hes all over Tim Horton's, I see more advertising with Crosby on it than Ovechkin...I really dont like Crosby.

Do you have a link or are you just making things up?

His equipment deal is 16% of his yearly salary from the Penguins. I think any of us would take a 16% raise to wear a particular brand of clothes to work, and most likely get them custom tailored and provided for free.

I think by speaking of the entire company he mean rbk shoes, rbk shorts, other sports rbk stuff... The rbk company doesnt include ccm.

I remember the Crosby comment clearly...but I do not believe it was a reference to Ovey on TV endorsements. The reference was related to Ovey's celebrations after scoring goals and on-ice antics...not endorsement advertising.

Ahh that comment, I believe that was made in reference to Ovechkin charging people and his reckless play on the ice. NBC then chose to selectively edit it alongside the clip of Ovechkin warming his hands with his 50 goal stick so that the viewing audience believed that Crosby had issues with goal celebrations and thus continuing a marketing feud between the two.

I'm going to stick up for Sid surrounding the Tim's commercials. The reason why he does so much for Tim's is because of the youth development. He believes that Tim Horton Timbits hockey is one of the greatest youth development programs, which he grew up playing, so he wants to give back. He also does a lot to support Halifax. Something like half of the reebok commercials he does has to be filmed/photographed in Halifax, by people from Halifax.

I'm not saying he doesn't do most of it for the money, but at least he supports companies who he believes in and his commercials are generally tasteful and not "over the top", such as those that Ovi takes part in.

As much as I am not a fan of Crosby, I do think the Tim Horton's endorsements are good for the game. Their youth development sponsorships are commendable. I wonder if he gives them a "thank you" discount. I do know he spends considerable time in the off season supporting the development program. I do agree that this is commendable.

Don't avoid buying Reebok items because of Sid, avoid them because they are just putting out crap equipment. The only thing I like from the Reebok line is the old Jofa elbows, I don't know why/how they've done such a good job screwing up the elbow pads but they have.
