Good, I read this and can live with the reasoning:

Cobb's totem is NOT the top, but its his WEDDING RING Everytime he is dreaming he’s wearing it–including in his memories inside the dream(because he would have been wearing it)but in reality he doesn’t wear the ring. With the emphasis made on having your own totem I really believe the ring was Cobb’s totem. The top may have been a memento–but I believe the ring was his totem. If you follow the ring—-and he spins the top with his ring hand (LEFT HAND) at the end so it’s easy to see—he is not wearing it—therefore at the end it’s reality. ***UPDATE***: Saw the film for a 5th time...COBB WEARS THE RING IN LIMBO and DREAMS ONLY...In the end when he is back home he does not have the ring. Ultimately, The strangeness and ambiguity of the ending, I believe was intentionally done by Nolan. Because that was his inception on the audience. He placed an idea of a top spinning and almost falling and then cutting to black. Leaving the idea that the ending was a dream...But in truth it was REALITY

Saw it last night - loved it. We only went to see it because my wife likes Ellen Page.

When Fischer Jr. woke up from the 10-hr flight, wouldn't he have recognized the other 1st-class passengers as being in his 1st, 2nd, and 3rd dreams? and then known that something was up?

He could have assumed that it's just because he saw them in person that they were reflected in his dream. You ever have a dream and wonder "why was that person there? "

no... i just wasn't using the spoiler tags correctly for some reason... wasn't working so i deleted half my post.

ANYWAYS......

Besides the wedding ring on him in only dreams/purg, before they went on the airplane they knew that they would be out 10 hours no matter what. After the 10 hours they'd either be conscious (what everyone is doing) or they'd essentially be in purg but their conscious body would look brain dead. That's why I think he's back in the real world. Also if you look at casting, they casted his kids at different ages and they are about a year apart. To me that means he's back in the real world. Greatest thing about this movie though is the fact that leaves it to be talked about and debated since there isn't a clear cut ending to it. The movie up until the end was already the best this year and one of the best of all time for me. The added fact that the whole thing is left up in the air is pure beauty.

raganblink: [ spoiler ] blah blah blah [ /spoiler ] without spaces.

Interesting little bit on the music.

So they used the same rhythm played it slower, flattened the 3rd to make it Minor. yeah it's pretty clever.

Just saw it for the second time, and it only gets better. I might go see it again. Absolutely amazing. Just one thing I cant wrap my mind around though.

Okay, so I understand almost all, but I have on lingering question that I cant answer myself. How did Cobb end up on the shore just outside of Saito?

I get that he went back into Limbo, and I get that Mal disappeared (presumably) because his subconscious finally relented after he confronted her, but I am not quite sure how he ended up where he did at the end.

Maybe after confronting Mal and confronting his subconscious, that state of Limbo was destroyed because he had fundamentally changed the root of his problems? Kind of like how Browning admitted guilt on the 2nd level only because that was Fischer's perception of him. Similarly, Cobb's natural perception of the dream state he was in (Limbo) was altered because subconsciously Saito, and no longer Mal, was what he was looking for?

Okay, so nevermind I guess. I rambled enough to satisfy myself with an answer even if it's not right!

Holy crap, this movie was amazing. Havent had a brain teaser like that in a while.

Oh, and I say the top definitely fell over at the end.

What about the old man at the end that asks: Are you here to kill me mr. Cobb? Is that an Older Cobb or a compeletly different character? Seems like it's him meeting himself in real life or dream to kill himself so he can perhaps wake up from the dream? The old man looks like he could be chinese but could also be caucasian which brings me to the aforementionned question

The old man was Saito...Cobb had to stay back in Limbo so he could save him.

So, apparently, at the end of the credits the sound of the totem falling can be heard.

Interesting, another reason for me to go watch again. Going on Wednesday.

I read that from one person, but a great majority said it was wrong. I stayed for the end of the credits the second time, and I heard nothing.

Just saw it last night. I thought it was very entertaining. It was kind of funny to me when they were talking about design. An old friend was a student at a prestigious architecture program and he used to get me into these deep discussions of use of space and facets of design. Those conversations used to make me nuts. The movie gave me flashbacks of those conversations.
