Suggestions for adult rec league shoulders

Recommended Posts

I currently have a pair of old Itech shoulders, and the caps are just way too big and bulky, I feel like I can barely move in them sometimes, plus they are hot as anything. I play in an adult rec league, and my largest concern, since I play a lot of defense, is taking a slapshot to the chest or something like that. I would like a bit of shoulder protection for incidental contact, but it really isn't terribly important. I have looked at the old school sherwoods, but they seem to have no protection in the front and back. I have also looked at the RBK 3k which seems to be a decent rec level set, but don't really know much about them. I have also seen guys wearing Ferrell's, but its a bit pricey for a rec level shoulder, but I am not totally opposed to it. So any suggestions for light, breathable, movable pads, that offer a nice level of protection for the chest and spine?

if you can find bauer lightspeed pro's they should be on clearance right now with the new bauer lightspeed supreme's coming out (exact same thing, diff liner). they have great protection and feel great.

Easton SE16, fantastic movement, excellent protection, low profile. That is all!

Do you mean the ST16? I can't seem to find SE16 shoulders. I have the ST16 elbows BTW, and love them.

There's a spring league I participate in....no checking, no clappers...all the n00bs wear shoulder pads...I play gritty defense and I don't wear shoulder pads...I think about 92 percent of the players (mostly college kids) don't wear shoulder pads...

Catch a few pucks in the chest and you may change your opinion. Image isn't everything (why else wouldn't you wear shoulder pads?) and I've found it's annoying to adjust back and forth between wearing shoulder pads (competitive) and not (adult league).

For the OP: I've had good luck with the Bauer Vapor series.

Yeah, all the "tough guys" don't wear cages either...until they end up getting all their teeth knocked out. I am too old , have too many outside responsibilities, and enjoy my life too much to end up with broken ribs or a mouth full of dentures just because I want to "man up".

I am starting to lean toward the farrell's. Any help with the sizing? I read in various places that they run really large.

They do run large. I'm 6'2", about 210lbs, 43" chest and wear medium Farrells. I wear large in other brands of shoulder pads. I have the white H500 model.

They can be adjusted with velcro around the arms and the sides. You can also easily remove, move and put back on the plastic add-on protection. The sizing chart on the Farrell site seems pretty accurate to me...I'm at the high end of the medium pads and do have them adjusted that way. Your chest size would probably be the best way to judge what size you need:

Small 32"-40" 130 - 175 lbs

Medium 40"-44" 175 - 210 lbs

Large 44"-48" 210 - 245 lbs

XL 48"+ 245+ lbs

I have a pair of RBK 4Ks (still say Jofa on them so I think they're early RBK models, bought them 4 or 5 years ago) and they're great for no-check leagues IMO. You should be able to find last year's (or older) models for pretty cheap I would think, I doubt the design has changed much since then.

The classic pads don't have much chest/spine protection...but a lot of low end pads do. The Easton ST6 and Reebok 4k are both pads with smaller caps that have good mobility and spine/chest protection. A buddy of mine loves his ST6's and I just got some 4k's, couldn't tell you how they are on the ice but off they feel really comfy.

Just about any of the low-mid pads should give you what you're looking for. Try a bunch on and see what feels best.

Yeah, Farrells are great. They do run big as per post above. They also don't offer any stomach protection. I would remove the shoulder caps if it's a non-checking league. With the shoulder caps on the Farrells do give you the linebacker/robocop look. It's a good product but way overpriced!

Do the 4k's have removable bicep protectors? Also--how is the sizing for you? I'm interested in finding an older set, but I'm afraid that I'm going to be right in between a junior Large and adult Small. Do you find they run big/small/standard?

I say a mid range CCM shoulder would be good for what youre looking for. Plenty of chest and spine, but also very low profile shoulder caps compared to most other brands.

And fairly cheap :D

Those U+Fit 09 looks like it may work pretty good for me.

These are the new Reebok 4k shoulders, and yes the biceps pads are adjustable/removable. What I like about these is that they are very lightweight but have a lot of coverage with as much protection as you could need in a non-hitting league. And the front and back are two-piece so they move a little better with the body. I fit into both adult medium and large but went with the large because I have wider shoulders (and found a new pair on Craigslist for cheap).

Chalk up another vote for the ST16's. Loved them, and would've kept them if they had sat on my clavicle right. Not a blem on the product itself, just with my disfigured anatomy.

Ended up picking up the U 07. I tried the ST, and while they are great fitting pads(I love the ST elbows I have), they are a little more than I need, and a bit heavy. Plus what I like about the U fit line is that the shoulder caps don't get stuck on my jersey , which is really annoying with other pads.
