Chinese hockey sticks...

Recommended Posts

Doesn't Bonny composites out of Shenzhen make sticks for Bauer?

That's correct.

My Bauer One95 is made in China, those look like Bauer copycats

In the emails I've exchanged with them, they've made sticks for Ballistik and for other brands in Europe.

I know I may have never said this before, but I've always thought you were an awesome guy

Chances are the sticks are clones of a name brand hockey stick. China doesnt have copyright laws, so if the make a hockey stick in China, a Chinese company can sell the same exact thing as their own.

Thats one of the reasons why I try to avoid buying a stick thats made in China.

My dad's an engineer and his company had a lot of problems with Chinese copyright infringement. They'd fly over and bring the CAD drawings and what not to get price quotes and basically when they'd leave the Chinese engineers would turn around and start producing them for other people. I think they even got offered their own product once from a factory that didn't know who they were.

Contacted a few of those companies recently, and some even called me to try to get me to buy their sticks (surprised them when I could speak Chinese)...

Basically I didnt follow thru with it... they told me that it was $75 for a blank stick, and $120 for shipping.

Been in contact with Lhonson Zhu from Prince Hockey and the price he quoted me is 73.00 for a blank and 49 shipping. I actually asked him for testimonials from people who have purchased from them before (to see what actual reviews might be like) and he sent me e-mail and regular addresses of customers, thought that it was kinda shady and not very professional.

I've purchased sticks from these guys, got the 12p version, fully wrapped in 12k, no logos. Various team members and younger age group players in ice and inline got them, skill levels from intermediate to national representative. The sticks are light (420g, 85flex / 428g 100flex) and nicely balanced. They use a straight shaft with a tapered blade so they are more like a Warrior or ST design as opposed to a true tapered stick like an SE16, S19, One95 OPS etc.

After 6 weeks of hard use, one stick has broken at the shaft just above the tenon and this would be because the kid who was using it is really aggressive in his stick attacks (having already gone thru S17's, S19's, 10k's and one95's this year the fact that the stick lasted 6 weeks is testament to a reasonable build quality). This kid also reckons its one of the nicest sticks he has ever used and this fair praise from one of the best age group players in our country. Myself personally I prefer my SE16's but then I'm old and it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

What I also found nice about them is the blades are still in good shape, no cracking, delaminating or falling apart as I've seen many Easton / Rbk blades do. So overall a nice stick at a nice price.

The X60 samples weigh in at 480g's, this is because they are fully wrapped in 24k carbon weave. I don't think it's worth the weight or extra cost compared to a 12k wrapped stick and the 24k wrapped sticks have limited blade choices.

Now for the bad news.

- Lonson's english is not that good. Having dealt with the Chinese before this is just something you get to accept and their business practices are often very different to us in the western world.

- They don't carry any stock regardless of what the auction may indicate. I found this out when trying to buy X60 samples for my second order. They make everything as needed so it takes 4 weeks before they will ship you a stick.

- I placed an order for LH and RH sticks, they didn't ship any LH in the order (which really pissed some players off) and Lonson didn't seem to care about it (which really pissed me off). Their levels of customer service isn't great.

- You pay in advance and then wait.

However the first lot of sticks were well received and I got enough requests for a second order and samples for shops, lets hope this time the LH and RH sticks will ship correctly.

If you live in the States or Canada and can get access to top end sticks that are pro stock / clear outs etc for around $100 then you can't go wrong.

We don't and when an S19 costs US$300 in our part of the world then it's time to look for something else as it gets really expensive when sticks keep breaking on a regular basis.

My mother works for a smaller electronics company here in Mississauga and she regularly frequents China and Shenzhen on business trips to meet clients. I told her about this 'Prince Hockey' and she suggested that with her many contacts (government or otherwise :p) she might be able to get some sticks for me to try out, possibly at no charge. She's going in March and if anything happens, I'll keep you guys posted :) Merry Christmas

I told them to email me but they never did. Just kidding, they did but it went right into my junk folder so I didn`t find it for like a month. At that point I obviously had a bunch of other sticks already (this is MSH :D)

I have had some experience with these sticks. In short: They are an ok stick, very light, visually the join between blade and shaft is rough, shaft has a short taper but still flexes well.

Purchased 100 of them all up, first purchases were fine, sticks lasted ok and performed in line with any other brand in the mid high end range (was purchasing the 12p stick).

However with the last batch of sticks they supplied the blade broke after just a few games, all in the same place through the middle. Supplier admits it was a manufacturing defect (because they made changes to the blade design) but will not fix, repair or supply replacement sticks or blades.

So you get what you pay for, cheap and nasty chinese service. I'll never purchase from them again and I'd recommend anyone else stay well clear of them.
