'Synergy's are garbage'

Recommended Posts

That's likely because they are completely blowing up equipment budgets for NCAA teams. Even though he says that that money issue is secondary, I highly doubt it.

In the college game they can save a ton of money. You get the same performance with a tapered shaft and blade and can replace blades whenever you need to do so. I don't know that Z-bubbles hold up much better but it's cheaper to replace them than Synergys as well.

Some of the article makes sense, but the writer/editor are at fault here. They should have not singled out Easton, even if DU were to have an exclusive deal with them. I have a feeling they and DU will be hearing from Easton soon.

Is it that much more than buying dozens of shafts and replacements blades?

based on some numbers i have heard from college equip mgrs... lets say a higher end player uses 12 shafts and 10 dozen blades a year... it would prob cost the school, around $2500. if that same player used 5 dozen OPS, the cost would be probably in excess of $5000. and thats for one player. no granted... a player probably wont go through 5 dozen ops, but they probably wont use 10 dozen blades also.

michigan state did a cost breakdown per player of what each player cost the team in sticks...using ops. some of the players that were fourth liners and didnt play much were in excess of $2000. thats a lot of money for a guy that might see 6 shifts a game.

I think Denver might have become a Mission program ala Minnesota in the off-season, but I could be wrong.

As far as the writer getting targetted by Easton, I don't see how. Especially if DU was an Easton school last season and Gwozdecky was talking mainly about Synergy sticks in the interview.

Were they an Easton-sponsored school last year?

It should've been mentioned in the article.

As far as "SyNergys" are concerned, I've heard a lot of people refer to OPSs as "SyNergys." Just don't know any better...

Well, although alot of DU players do use combos (particularily with wood blades), there are still a few Synergy's and even a Stealth being used by their players. What I find interesting is the fact they don't necessarily mind spending the money, but the fact he implies the performance advantage is negligible...something I, and many others on this board I think agree with. Why pay $220 for a Stealth, or $199 for an Alpha Nemesis??? Those sticks don't make a player any better...it's all psychological. Find a good combo - it'll last longer and its cheaper, IMO.

With most sticks the performance increase is marginal at best. The Nemesis Alpha on the other hand I witnessed a noticeable increase in shot velocity. Accuracy was not as bad as you might expect with the increased kick but the curve was not really my bag. Getting a couple of freebies helped as well.

Most pics I've seen had guys wearing Franklin gloves last season.

I'm not sure if they had a deal with Easton for sticks or not.

As for the whole brand name to desribe a whole product type isn't unique. Just ask Xerox, Q-Tips, and Coke.

maybe they should have college players buy ther own sticks

Considering how much money schools make off of the kids playing hockey with ticket sales, merchandise and the like, I don't think it's too much for the school to put some cash up for sticks. I think the system most schools use is fine. They'll provide sticks from a sponsoring manufacturer. If a player wants something else then the school puts forth so much for the kid to get that.

I don't think many or any School's make money off hockey.

I've heard that a lot around here. "The CCM Synergy", "The Bauer Synergy"...etc...etc... Yeah it makes me want to scream but like you said, some people (most) are not educated hockey-equipment wise. I'm sure if CCM started the OPS trend, then everyone would be referring to OPS as "Vectors".

If I had a dime for everyone that called inline skates, "Rollerblades".....

Didn't know that people call OPS in general "Synergies". Must be like how they refer to carbonated soft drinks (soda or pop) as "Coke" in the southern US (see link below)...

Here in Sweden the OPS are often called "full composite sticks" (but in Swedish words of course).

It's soda.

Kristin and I are at odds on this one all the time. She calls it pop.

I use brand names, I'm funky like that

I say pop. No offence, but only American say soda.

Depends on where you're from in the US. Some say pop, tonic, soda, or use the universal "coke". I often use soda when I mean beer. It all came from when one of the Hanson brothers in Slapshot said,"Wanna get a soda after the game?"
