The 2010-2011 Suspension Thread

Recommended Posts

Back on topic, apparently Daniel Paille should have a lengthy suspension coming to him. I haven't seen the video of the hit, but judging from the writers on Twitter, it seems pretty bad.

I was watching the game. I would say 3 - 5 games at minimum. He clearly came from his blind side & made contact with his head.

The worse part was listening to Jack Edwards on NESN. He is making every excuse in the book to justify the hit. Then he has been going about how dirty the Stars have been & there long history. It makes me sick as a Bruin fan to have to listen to him. You know if someone had made the same hit to a Bruin he be crying.

Amazing enough he actually admitted it was a bad hit at the start of the third.

i liked how the boston announcer said "0 for 2" and then when they started showing the replays he realized he was wrong and didnt say anything else and let the other guy talk

That is vintage Jack Edwards, reacts & make presumptions before seeing what really happened or knowing the facts.

I'm expecting a 3-5 game suspension, but we'll see. Colly didn't do the league review, but Murphy is as inconsistent as him.

I think 4 games is about right, seems like the only thing Paille got right about the hit was that Sawada still had the puck (barely), it was from the blindside, elbow to the head, left his feet, high follow through, textbook for what the NHL is looking to eliminate. It is nice knowing that Campbell isn't involved with Bruin-related suspensions on account of his son playing for them.

Let me preface by saying that I am a Dallas fan.

One, Paille's hit was clean until Sawada dropped his shoulder down. Paille had him lined up shoulder to shoulder until Sawada dropped his shoulder, and then he did a terrible job at keeping his elbow/follow through down.

Two, Campbell shouldn't be involved in anything on-ice since he has a son in the NHL. I don't care if it's for a different team, he shouldn't be involved, period.

Third, from the article:

"Paille delivered a lateral hit where the principal point of contact was his opponent's head," said Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy. "Additionally, the injury suffered by the Dallas player was a factor in this decision."
Of course the injury suffered was a factor, what else is new.

Am I okay with the suspension? Yes and no. Yes, in that a suspension was issued in accordance with their new policies on headshots. No, in the factors that they used in issuing the decision, and that Murphy had to make the call in place of Campbell, which is just stupid.

Kudos to Andy Ference for his comments on On the Fly. It is so refreshing to hear the teammate of the guy who threw the hit actually say that the hit was wrong and it is good for the league to be trying to get them out of the game rather than be the typical hypocritical teammate.

This may be slightly off topic, but on NHL OTF, they said that the league is looking into a minimum 5 game suspension for a Rule48 violation, minimum 10 if the player is injured on the play.

Now that I would be okay with. It's cut and dry, not black and white and up to the disciplinary committee like it currently is. Give them no room for leniency, one way or the other.

They finally figured out that they can't trust Colin Campbell to be consistent. Firing him would be a better solution, but giving him strict guidelines would be a major improvement.

When a player is suspended he is suspended without pay. Does his salary than come off the teams salary cap? Or, is the player still technically paid by the team, but the money is donated to the NHLPA charitable fund therefore still counting against the teams salary cap?

From NHLSCAP.com

Who doesn't count against the cap?

During the season: Players assigned to the minors - even if on one-way contracts - do not count (as long as they are not on conditioning assignments or fit the condition of 50.5(d)(i)(B)(5) above) as well as players signed to a contract that are in Major Junior hockey or overseas. Players suspended by either the team or the NHL will not count for the duration of the suspension as long as the player is not receiving his salary; however, teams must keep enough payroll space available to be able to accept the player should his suspension end immediately.

During the offseason: players signed to a 2-way contract but who were not on an NHL roster at any point during the previous season, and any player not under contract. That's it - everyone else counts as described above.

Can't find the video yet, but for those of you that have seen it what's Matt Cooke going to get for the hit on Tyutin?

he could ...... but I doubt it. Tuytin , turned his head an saw cooke coming , then turned his back just before cooke hit him. Plus the fact that fedor wasnt injured = doubtfull that cooke will get anything

Very true........and very unfortunate. The thing that bothers me is people actually accused Perron of embellishing the hit.

He did. Thats why he didnt play for so long. (Joking).

Someone please end Matt Cookes' career (if you can call it that). Where is Chris Simon when you need him? I'd love to see a big boot to the face or a two hander to his face but preferiably someone to just break both his legs, not severely enough to disable him but make it so that he can no longer play in the NHL again. That would be perfect.

Please point out where he turns his head and sees that please. I didnt catch it.

The fact that Tyutin wasn't hurt on the play is beyond me. This is one of the worst Matt Cooke dirty plays, and I really hope the league comes down hard on this one, because it's just ridiculous. This is twice in three days now...when is the NHL going to realize he does this crap on purpose?
