The 2010-2011 Suspension Thread

Recommended Posts

I guess intent is one of those things noone really knows.. Noone knows if Steckel intended to injure Crosby for example?

The only people that have any question on that are Pens fans. It requires some serious mental gymnastics to make a case for intent.

Face it, if the Cooke/Savard thing never happened, he wouldnt be nearly as universally hated as he is.

Yes he would. It's not the first, or last, cheap shot he has thrown. How he has escaped suspension on so many of his antics defies logic.

Stevens had many hits that were borderline at best. Like his one on Lindros, he comes from the other side of the ice & delivered an elbow to the head. I could argue he was trying to injure him.

Most of the hits people had a problem with, were with hits like that.

I'm guessing that Lindros head-butting Stevens in the face might have had something to do with Stevens running Lindros at every opportunity after that.

Ok, how about Kozlov, Kariya, Francis, etc...

If Cooke was on the Bruins that night and layed out Crosby with that hit he put on Savard, what would Pens fans think of Matt Cooke then? Go ahead, chew on that one.

Instead of being a great 3rd liner that some of they say he is, hed be the scum of the league.

just an update to the whole NYI/PIT situation

http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/38385-Steve-Yzerman-encourages-Mario-Lemieux-to-continue-getting-involved-with-NHL.html

"I think Mario is one of the most well-respected, intelligent people in the game," the Tampa Bay Lightning GM said Monday on a conference call. "I would encourage him (and) I think we should all encourage him to get more involved with the league because he has a lot to offer."

Sutton hit Hendricks pretty good from behind into the boards tonight in the Caps/Ducks game. Initially there was no call, but Erskine jumped him, so when they gave him the instigator, they gave Sutton 2 for boarding as well. Should have been 5, and I wonder given that he has been suspended before for pretty much the same thing, if the league will look at it.

Hendricks had the puck, was actually making a play at the time, so it's not a case where Bylsma would say he glided, looked and should have know the player was going to leap shoulder first into him

Brilliantly worded. I wonder how many people will get the intent behind those comments.

I didn't get to see much of the game as I would have liked to, but it doesn't seem like it. I didn't even see the hit until I posted it here. I had just heard about it on the radio. Definitely looks worse in real-time. Upshall tried to play it off after the game too.

"It was just a routine play going to the net hard," he said. "I didn't see the puck get covered nor did I hear a whistle. I didn't intentionally try to drive him into the boards. I hope he's all right. Those plays happen a lot."

No whistle was blown yes. But Bobrovsky had the puck covered, and while he didn't intentionally try to put him into the boards, he did intentionally hit him. Those plays don't happen a lot, and now Bartulis is done for the year.

The play was next to the Flyers net, what possible reason could he have for hitting Bartulis? The only thing he was trying to do was exactly what he did do, drill a guy that had no idea he was coming. Guys like this, making hits like this are ruining the NHL.

I don't know, but if there was a reason, I'd sure as hell love to hear it. After I watched the hit I don't see how that wasn't a five and a game for him...

And a 10+ game suspension. Good Canadian boy on a soft Euro guy, so it's ok.

Chadd, you're missing the point. Bartulis still gets paid even though he is injured and Upshall only loses a few games pay, not a lot of salary. This is what the players want and they let Campbell know it via NHLPA. Crazy but true.

Not really, there is growing sentiment for more significant suspensions, driven primarily by the head shots. GMs are getting on the bandwagon as well, hence the discussion about a minimum length for any head shot and a more severe one for anything with an injury associated with it.

Interesting if that is their official position, because more and more high profile guys are complaining about it. I rarely agree with Brooks, but it will be interesting to see how Fehr handles it.

The problem isn't totally with Colin Campbell and the suspensions he hands out. I always thought it was. Now I see that really, the players are the problem. It was obvious but I failed to recognize it.

Here is another interesting perspective from an ex-NHLer:

Don't lump people together, there are plenty of Pens fans that think Cooke is dirty and many that would like to see him elsewhere. That said, if Cooke was on the market, there'd be no shortage of suitors.
