The 2010-2011 Suspension Thread

Not a fan of the flying forearm up high, but that doesn't usually warrant anything from Colin Campbell.

I don't necessarily agree with "if the head is down its his own fault" school of thought, but I think that this is the case here. It's pretty hard to make head contact with a hip check (unless you're Chara checking Nate Gerbe or Marty St. Louis), so I think Hall needs to be blamed for putting himself in that position. If Doughty wanted to he could have put his forearm/shoulder into Hall's head, I think the hipcheck was the cleaner play.

You and physics don't get along. The force from the hit naturally makes your arms extend. His arm hardly makes contact, regardless.

It's up before contact and I love physics, my job depends on it.

That one can go either way, sure, he connected on the chops but Olesz doesn't make any kind of move at all. I could see it argued as just being a taller guy running into a smaller guy.

I think olesz knew what he was doing there - but it's always hard when a player goes to throw a hit and the other player is hunched over - you are almost always going to make contact with the head first. On the other hand this is a perfect case for having softer caps on the shoulder pads.

I thought the same thing...so I looked them up. Olesz (6'1") - Kane (6'2")....

I dunno...that one is tough to call. I'm thinking clean, but unfortunate for Kane.

It was a high hit to an unsuspecting player that was already engaged in a battle for the puck, these are exactly the types of hits that the head shot rule should be addressing.

Wow, its crazy how different that hit looks in the slow mo. Anyway, it's a pretty bad hit but it didn't look like he was targeting Kane's head, I think it was more the position that the two were in. I don't think Olezs is a dirty player (is he?). But we've all seen how CC punishes the results, not the intent... Does anyone know if Kane returned to the game or not?

Yeah it's a big difference. It looks like he barely made contact at all in real time. Probably just caught in the nose which is why he was holding his face.

Wasn't this hit to Savard considered a total headshot??

It's Savard, it's not exactly blindside, but way more dangerous than a blindside hit to the shoulder, if you ask me...

It's unfortunate that Savard was hurt on the play, but Hunwick didn't charge at him, jump up or get the elbow up. He tried to line him up and cut him off on the boards and finish his check. Yes, he did catch Savard in the head, but he's a bit taller and he did have quite a bit of speed when he made the hit because he was chasing the puck carrier. Savard also stopped skating earlier to try to make the past and then coasted, Hunwick coasted just before the hit, but was skating longer so he ended up catching Savard a bit earlier - if Hunwick was going a touch slower or Savard a bit faster then it may have been a body/body hit.

It's too bad Savard was hurt, but if you suspend every hit where a player is hurt or concussed you might as well ban checking. I do agree that intentional headshots where guys jump up or bring up an elbow should be suspendible, but you have to draw a line somewhere.

Honestly, I really don't see the difference between that hit and this one, which got 3 games earlier this season:

major difference is the existence of the boards, but other than that, basically all I can see is that Doan's hit was a really late, and both were late.

The major difference is that it was Savard and we all know how Colin Campbell feels about him. There's no chance of it being a suspension in this case.

From todays Penguins vs Rangers game.

Must be taking notes from Avery with the dive. If you're gonna try to dish an elbow be able to take what's coming next. Note: Prust has 13 fights this season not including the one he engaged in prior to this event.

I notice you didn't include the clip of Orpik going for Avery's head when he didn't have the puck.

I think the other difference is Sexton had passed the puck about a minute and half before getting hit. Savard had just let it go and Hunwick was finishing his shot. guys have to stop facing the boards to draw penalties, because it's just getting them hurt. Savard had no reason to turn there.

I could include that but I found this clip within seconds of opening my browser so I snagged it. Even though it was a clear shoulder to the head it's Sean Avery.

So it would be ok if someone did that to Cooke?

It's karma it'll happen, isn't that why everyone got such an erection from Kane's fight vs him?

Didn't see that fight, more interested in seeing someone that knows what to do end his career.
