ESPN back in the fold?

Recommended Posts

what are the chances of VS showing games and ESPN as well? Do you think it one signs a contract then the other is out?

They'd split the rights or rather, Versus/NHL would own the rights and subcontract to ESPN. I could see it going the other way, but NBC would lose out on the Stanley Cup most likely and that might cause them to walk away outright.

Outside of college sports, which ESPN heavily relies on, they have some room for extra games every week. If the NHL plays nice and schedules them some tasty matchups on a weeknight...say Caps/Pens...ESPN would be all over that.

It's really beneficial to not only the NHL, but to both networks. Unfortunately, greed will win out and I'm sure they'll be so short sighted that we'll get more of the same.

I like Andy Strickland's work most of the time but that article is one of the more naive pieces I've seen from him.

ESPN already has a solid connection to TSN. Maybe you see some of the TSN crew doing ESPN games as well.

Gord Miller is good at pbp, Chris Cuthburt is amazing. I think the US audience would appreciate Duthie. Dreger and Bobby Mac are solidly coinnected. TSN already uses ESPN's NFL guys, why not make it a 2-way street.

Funny...I've been reading about ESPN getting the NHL back for a while now and I think you're the first person to bring up the TSN connection.

ESPN would not be able to do that with all the TSN branding on game broadcasts and it might be difficult to get those guys to work more games than their current TSN schedule allows.

I honestly don't want ESPN to get the NHL back...Think about it...

Yes, it'll get a little more analysis, but it will also relegate us to little brother status (again), and instead of being on 2-3 nights a week on VS, it'll be one game a week on ESPN. I'm all for more coverage, but I just don't think it's happening with ESPN.

Call me crazy, but I enjoy the coverage that VS has been giving the league. I think the thing they did this year in the playoffs was brilliant...piggybacking playoff games? It was great.

Anyway, like I said...I know it would get more national attention, but it would come at the detriment of hardcore fans.

TSN carries Vs and just adds a watermark to the screen...they don't even block the existing braninding. Same with NBC's SNF and ESPN MNF. I don't see how it would be any different for ESPN to add their watermark to the broadcast...now, scheduling I could see being a potential issue.

Personally, I say no. The NHL is front and center on Versus. The wall to wall playoff coverage last year was evidence of that. Were the NHL to head back to ESPN they would be taking a back seat to the NFL, NBA, and NCAA football and basketball. Sometimes it is better to be the big fish in the little pond.

Vs just needs to tinker with some of its announcers and get rid of McCarty. I'm all for a second chance but the guy sounds like Michael Madsen and is always threatening to explode out of his suit, like Tommy Boy.

ESPN is absurd with their branding, they would not just slap their logo on another broadcast.

Most of the recent players they have brought in have been terrible.

Aaron Ward was the worse. Strictly unlistenable, all he did was stutter and contradict himself.
