Lightning: 2010-2011

Surprised there wasn't a thread for these guys yet. Folks are already starting to wonder about Stamkos hitting 50 in 50. Is it too early to wonder if he can take a run at an even loftier level?

At my draft hockey pool this year I had only one wish. My wish was for Stamkos to be available come my first pick. I was 5th to draft. Ovechkin and Crosby were the two first picks followed by the Sedins... So I picked him and was even contemplating picking him in the event that I would have been the first to draft for my pool. Needless to say, he's helped me quite a bit in my pool so far. Boy oh boy do Rick Tocchet and Barry Melrose look like ass hats now!

He's on fire and I think that he has a legitimate chance to be the first one in a long while to score 50 in 50. He's 19 for 19 now and already has two hat tricks.

Seriously? You think he was this good in his rookie season, but it was the coaches that held him back?

Holding him back, maybe, maybe not. If they did not have faith in him they certainly did not play him as much as he should have played which could have held him back. Who knows. Didn't Barry Merlose say that Stamkos would never do anything good in the NHL? I'm sure I have read that somewhere at one point in his rookie season and I believe there was something about Tocchet too regarding the kid. Maybe I misread, misheard or whatever but it was mentionned again this week week but I can't remember who I believe it was either RDS or TSN. But maybe I read too much in their criticism towards Tocchet and Melrose. I'm almost sure that I read something from Stamkos himself saying somthing too but that's starting too many maybes in this message so maybe I got it all wrong from the get go, at least about Tocchet. Melrose, I know I read a few things about him not being impressed with Stamkos.

Melrose didn't question his talent, he questioned whether or not he was ready to be in the NHL.

Exactly, Barry thought he would be better playing 20 minutes a night in junior instead of playing 5 or 6 in Tampa. He was under pressure to win but they wanted to use Stamkos status as a top pick to sell more tickets.

And he still got 23 goals and 23 assists in his rookie season which is quite acceptable and one can only think what his numbers could have been had he played top 6 minutes.

He averaged 15 minutes a game and had 9 power play goals, it's not like he was playing fourth line minutes after Barry left.

Seeing as I do live in Florida....If the Rangers suck and cant get beyond the first round — which I'm sure they'll end up finding a way to do so, I'm rooting for the Lightning :)

I was thinking that they may ride Desjardins a little and see what hes got. I must say I'm a little sad not to see it as well.

New logos and jerseys. What do you guys think?

I like the idea, sorta. Bold design with sharp edges and they're trying to be "iconic." I think the problem is that they look too much like cartoon superheroes. Maybe it's part of the Guardian project.

In my opinion he doesnt take his job seriously. From a technique perspective he doesnt ever seem to set up for the rebound or the second shot. When he is on he is very good, but not consistent at all. He was never the same after the concussion.

Has Smith really regressed that much? He was really impressive in Dallas.

No, he hasn't. The teams first stretch of the season was ridiculous, with numerous back-to-back road games. In the Lightning's style this caused the team to suffer from fatigue and breakdowns. He'd only be facing 20 shots a game but about 30% of those were from the slot, one-timers and deflections. The previous couple of years he's had a bad team in front of him and he's been fighting injuries.

It says a lot about a team when BOTH goalies are suffering from their worst stats of their career on the same team. Then to get out of the tough scheduling part of the season and have all (now three) goalies with similar numbers: 1ish GAA, .900+ SV% etc.. Then Smith got hurt. It's seems pretty clear that it's not the goalies in Tampa, despite what VS claims. Most fans and commentators are caught up in save percentage and goals against average but those are team stats for the most part. Roloson had a 38 save shutout last night, only about 10 of those shots were from good shooting angles. Nearly all the shots were from the outside, many from below the circles.

With three goalies on the payroll now and Smith being the highest paid, with his contract ending it only makes sense to move him. If it frees up cap room for a trade to fill a couple of holes then I'm all for it. Smith is a great goalie but he could use a goalie coach and/or a veteran goalie. He needs help to control his emotions.

Apparently the rest of the league disagrees Brian.....he cleared waivers and has been assigned to Norfolk. ;)

I don't see him playing all that much. The youth need to be developed and Smith is only there to play out the rest of his contract. He'll probably play just enough to keep him ready for a call up if need be.

Ok, apparently the PR sent out was incorrect, he isn't being sent to Norfolk. What do you do with a player who has cleared waivers but isn't getting reassigned? Practice squad? Trade bait at half salary?

They're carrying three goalies. Just because a player clears waivers doesn't mean he sucks. The worst part of Smith is his contract and his health. He's been injured about half of the past 3 seasons, what team would be dumb enough to pick up that contract for a guy that might not play consistently? ..besides Toronto and NYI, who already have goalies that are paid well and are constantly injured.
