Total One Skates-Durability Issues

Recommended Posts

One picture, I see your skate is laced up all the way - another telltale way to break a tendon guard - forcing your foot into the boot at an angle. You guys would be amazed on how longer your skates would last if you take the laces out of the first two eyelets and loosen down.

I can't get my foot out of the One95 unless I do that.

I wouldn't be so quick to jump on CCM U+ CLs as the solution to anyone's durability issues. I sharpened a pair of CCM U+ 12s(same boot construction outer with U+ foam interior as CL) yesterday that had a good 1/2"-3/4" puncture on the outside of the boot. The puncture cut through the exterior and I could see the white U+ foam inside the boot. I took 2 pictures but haven't posted them yet. The boots have to be less than 3 months old based on release date and when I noticed this AAA player wearing new skates in November/December. I have seen some ONE95s and T1s that have been through some major battles over time that never had anything like this occur to an ALIVE boot.

Eh, I wouldn't lump Alive into being the end to be all...remember MLSman when he got his, got sliced bad the first skate.

In related news, I saw a pair of SE16s a couple of days ago that exploded on the side...clear into the boot.

ALIVE is not indestructible but it seems to hold up pretty well over the long haul. I've seen a lot of AAA Bantams and Midgets with ONE95 and T1 that have a lot of miles on them. I expect to see a battered boot and they still look decent. Anything, any brand can blow up anytime.

I play bantam AAA and my One100sare sure holding up well. I got them within the first 2 months of release and skate 6+ times a week. 1-4 hours a day. I also went to 10 weeks of hockey camp in the summer and their still holding up strong spare a few broken eyelets and loose stitching on top of the ankle

I still can't believe that people need to be told this. It's kind of obvious that if you have to crank and pull a skate to get it off/on, it's gonna wear out faster. I take out two eyelets and loosen all the way down, pull the tongue forward, slide my foot forward out of the heel pocket and then my foot comes out without stressing the boot at all. It goes in the same way. Even the ankle padding is pretty much the same shape as it was new. I also always take my insoles out after I skate to prevent rot and rust... and suprise, suprise, my skates (One95's)are in great shape despite being over 2 years old and well used. Try it people!

I'm not trying to start a fight here or anything, but shouldn't a thousand dollar pair of skates be able to hold up for a longer period of time then this? He may not be taking the best care of them, or any care at all, but you'd think a product this high end and this expensive would be able to stand up to some kind of stress.

Assuming that what I bolded is true (may not be), just because something is expensive/ top of the line does not mean that mistreatment will not degrade or even severely damage them. You have to take care of what you own for it to last be it $50 skates or $1000 skates. If, as someone suggested, he used a skate blade to take them off on the tendon guard or any type of mistreatment, no skate will last. Hell, give me the most expensive car in the market and I'll demolish within minutes, but I can make a Daewoo last if you take care of it.

Point being, skates will only last for as long as you care for them.

...the car terminology all the time makes me smile...we always use that in computer business to explain set-ups, functions, settings...the biggest misunderstanding in all topics is, that people just don't get the point, that using highest performance products needs a lot of knowledge, experience and money. Plz start a formula one car and try to make it out of the box...$$$$. Hockey is tough, so people also expect durability...we talking about trucks, not those racing trucks, where engines get changed after every race, but trucks, that do daily work for years...hmmm...factor 'feeling' is another point. When it comes to a sensitive part, like your feet (car interior...sitting on a monster SGI-computer)it's easy to loose the aspects of your needs. As 1k isn't 'that much' money (compared to 100000+) a lot of people with a wrong self-assessment will criticize and judge. Last, the 'coolness' factor. If you can afford, by yourself, parents, sponsors or whatever, and like to show off some decadent behavior or just don't care, how fucked up your Ferrari looks...ok, go for it. But don't complain about money or 'quality'...Sad, when you're just a poor imitator of a questionable attitude. If you're not, you will accept professional advices, take care of your stuff and follow certain rules. End.

The delamination issue is likely a bum skate, but some of the other damage really looks like you mistreating your skates. For example, this:

Is almost certainly you using the blade of one skate to take off the other skate, something that you should never do. Once you get your new TOs, make sure to unlace the top eyelet of two, always take the skates off gently (always put them on gently too), and always remove the insole between games. The vast majority of people with TOs report good durability, take care of them and chances are they'll last.

Its weird that people get the tradeoff between performance and durability for sticks but don't think it could work the same way with skates.

I must hear an echo...

Just repeating what you and others have said to try to get the point across re: skate maintenance, so as to save his dad's wallet further pain in the future. Though I guess I should have used the quote feature.

Got a call from my LHS today letting me know that a new pair of T1s has came in for me. Quite impressed as I thought I wouldn`t be getting them replaced. Just not sure if I should go ahead with using this pair, as I`m still deciding whether I should try another brand out.

And wow, I can`t believe i`m getting blamed for taking off my skates with the blade of my other skate. That cut was from someone elses skate-I noticed it right after one of my games, not seeing it there before. I take my skates off with the boot and the boot only. I undo the top two eyelets when taking them off so it is easier.

Nice to know Bauer's taking care of folks.

Nothing wrong with thinking about another brand, but I thought you were in a really big hurry to get replacement skates to use right now. What happened?

My LHS lent me a pair of S17 skates to use while my T1s were sent in. I didn't think that they'd be lending me any skates-or good ones, but they get the job done and are fine.
