Lace repair...

Recommended Posts

OK....so it seems that every pair of wax laces i buy, the ends of them come off or whatever, causing the ends to fret/fray making it a PITA to get in the holes.

my whole life i've been using a lighter and kind of re-melting the wax and creating 'burnt ends' but that only lasts so long...

so, what do you do to prevent this from happening?

Never had it happen with Graf laces. You might want to try Gorilla Laces though.

Shops around here aren't fancy enough to carry Graf laces; i ask wherever i go!

I've wrapped the ends of my laces in a thin layer of duct tape. This will keep them from coming off and fraying. If you use too much it wont fit through the hole though.

i'll give it a shot..i was using packaging tape, but after my sweat saturates the laces, tape gets ruined and comes off anyway. duct tape solves all, right? lol.

Duct tape is too thick, after you wrap the end, it probably wont fit through the eyelets. Ever try dripping some wax over the burnt end?

No better way that using a match or a cigarette lighter and melt them (the nylon in the laces, not the wax). Twist them up, heat until they melt (may catch on fire - just blow them out), and then pinch\roll them between your finger tips. BE CAREFUL AS IT WILL BURN YOUR FINGERS. You could wrap your finger tips in tape first to avoid it....

The key is to melt and pinch at least 1/4 inch of lace. I usually end up with a solid melted end about 1/2 in long.... no more worries about fraying. (sorry about the pic... cell phone pic)

I used to have this issue with laces as well...

When you get a new pair, try using the lighter on the ends before you even attempt to put the laces in the skates. You don't need to heat them up for very long - just enough to singe and seal the end. After a while you will get the hang of how much heat is needed.

Also, I found that a little more care in taking off my skates went a long way to preserving the laces. Pulling the laces too quickly through the eyelets will shred the tips in no time.

that's exactly what i've been doing; just not as much. i'll try it again like you. thanks for the pic!

I use elite laces, the tip is basically molded and doesn't fray.

available at your LHS or online?

I bought a pair of waxed Pro Guard laces a couple weeks ago and the ends fell apart as I was lacing my skates up for the first time with them.

x2 best laces, indeed! $3@ my hockey shop I go to.

tried them once - i didn't like the way the ends were molded. maybe mine were a bad batch but they didn't use enough heat so there wasn't much molding.

Yeah, sometimes you gotta get that perfect length of lace. Maybe cut out 6" and tie them back together? If you put a good bend knot in the ends (not a reef knot/"regular" knot) it should work pretty well.

I use this method - it's pretty easy actually.

The guy has other methods too, but I use that one.

After I wrap it I usually coat it with a bit of crazy glue - it's bulletproof. The laces will go before the end does and they are better than new.

This guy's website is so freaking awesome. He has changed a lot of my shoe/skate-tying/lacing habits. I hadn't seen this aglet repair, but it looks great and I'll probably try it sometime.
