Graf Ankle Support?

Recommended Posts

So, this is my first time ever in Grafs, G70 to be exact. (been on skates for 23+ years).

I'm coming from Bauer Vapors, and more recently, TotalOnes. I skated on them today for the first time and I felt like I had no ankle support what so ever.

Is this normal, or is this a sign that perhaps they might be too wide or something else?

I mean, I've played high level hockey and I felt like a complete ankle bender for the first 20 minutes.

dberube,

The Grafs are generally thought of as a softer boot. Based on the skates that you've listed, comparatively - you are basically going from a plastic lace up cast to a high top sneaker..... It is something that you will get used to and actually like, or you'll hate it and go back to Bauer.

Did you actually go an official graf dealer and have them size you up and everything? I think you're in the wrong boot. Graf's have different ankle widths and you're probably in the wrong boot.

My Graf's 703's feel tight and I have no wiggle room. 703's are narrow fit's and the G3's are like that as well. Your skates, the G70's are extra stiff but have a medium ankle width. You probably belong in G3's.

Grafs in general are relatively low cut compared to the other brands nowadays. I dunno about the vapors, but the TO's lace up pretty high compared to grafs. Just tossing that idea out there as well.

Exactly

I'm a big fan of lower cut and more flexibility, I love 707s.

Agreed,

Proper sizing makes a big difference. I'm in G35 Ultra X's (narrow) and the ankle support and stiffness is ideal.

Came from custom Vapor XXX's (which I still miss); but these Graf's are the best fitting stock skate I've ever had.

Switching to a different skate model is always an adventure in patience. It may take you a bit of time to adjust to the Grafs as it did me. I went from an Easton composite to a pair of Graf 735's and the difference was like day and night. I still use both now. The Grafs are my pickup game skates and the Eastons I still prefer for my mens league games. I seem to be able to go back and forth now with no issues but it toke me almost six to eight months before I was comfortable with the Grafs. The thing I like about the Grafs is they are more durable than my Eastons so they are a great backup skate I can pull on anytime. Presently I'm slowly breaking in a pair of Easton SE16's because my old 1300C's are starting to show their age and the Grafs are a nice change when I want it. The Graf fit is one of the best on the market in my opinion and they are a nice skate once you adjust to them.

I felt the same way coming from XXXX's into G35s. It's taken some adjusting but the comfort level of the Graf boot justifies the switch. Stick with it and you'll get used to it.

Yup. I switched from X:50's to Supra 735. It's definitely a different feel, but you pretty much get that when you jump to different skates. I did notice the lower cut of the boot, and the difference in weight when I first started skating on the grafs. But 3 months into it, I don't think I can switch back to Bauer.

I just switched from 735's into One100's. I'm not sure I can go back the other way lol.

I'd first either get LS2's or have the skates profiled to match your Bauers since you're a pretty strong skater and would want to take that out of the equation. Now in Bauers I would skip the top one or two sets of eyelets before moving to Grafs, which I lace up all the way. It's a lower cut and softer boot for sure.

Pretty much the same experience for me on my switch to G35 Ultra X's from x:60's.

different style of boot. When I got Bauers after Grafs I found I couldn't freely move my ankle and I couldn't generate power off of the standing start. the Grafs are more about moving your foot in my opinion. That causes me to feel like there is less support but in reality it's just me having to skate in a different manner and use my ankles more.

As I wore out the stiffness in my old 735's, I couldn't lace the top of my skates tight enough to feel comfortable. Now in my one100's, I leave the first eyelet undone and it feels just about right.
