Worst Trend to Happen to Hockey?

Recommended Posts

Comic book characters are back in vogue right now, just look at the trail of blockbuster movies. Of course, it should be noted that comic book characters are in vogue and not really comic books themselves. The reason why the movies have worked so well is they've dumped the decades of continanity, and used the characters inside easy to follow story lines. So the NHL is trying to ride the coat tails of that trend. This is why I don't think it works: kids that liked the Iron Man movies you could probably sell hockey to, kids that actually read Iron Man comics I don't necessarily think are often destined to be big sports fans. Yes, I'm stereotyping like hell right now. But most stereotypes exist because there are more than a few grains of truth in them.

really good point, the NHL/Hockey in General is kind of a niche sport ( please don't beat me up for saying that..just personal opinion) when I was in the age group for the Guardian Project's target market during the mid 90's i got hooked on the NHL by living in a hockey rich culture of southern new hampshire, trading player cards, pond hockey, travel league etc. it runs in our blood and I believe that can be true for a lot of people who are fans of the sport, but with this new generation who is obsessed with video games, television and have an obesity problem.. the NHL is trying to fuel the next generation and maybe this was a major mistake since the kids who sit on the couch all day and eat cheetos and play world of warcraft( sorry for the stereotype) are probably less likely to enjoy the beauties of the NHL or Hockey in general.

I wonder what else the NHL could do to get the next generation hooked on the sport?

PHEW.

I like my equipment, I like my colors coordinated, but if anyone has visited the group, you know the aspect of it I'm referring to.

Along the same lines, the elitism gets old after spending some time throughout the sport.

I'll keep beating this drum...

The latest influx of generic NHL jerseys, all similar colours with a lack of real imagination to them. If they're not careful half the league will be sporting either a navy blue or baby blue home jersey!

What teams are in baby blue? I can only think of two (Pitt and Atlanta)

Some of them are sweet like Pittsburgh'a third kit but Vancouver is lacking originality... I really don't see a point for the laces around the neck unless they are really holding the neck together...

also camo and hockey jerseys... gross

The point is that it's decorative. Like piping or shoulder patches. And anything else on the jersey that isn't the name and number on the back. It's just there to look good.

yeah true, but when every team has them its starts to loose its novelty and originality.. don't get me wrong I really like some of the "throw back" thirds jerseys but somtimes I think its taken a little two far when the colors have no relation to the team.

Worst trend: defensemen shooting head-high one-timers.

I understand your gripe but when every forward feels obligated to lay out their body on shots from the blue line in the regular season(I get it in the playoffs, for sure), then as a D-Man, look out, I'm blasting it high.

Why bother trying to shoot over him when it is just as easy to not blast it high and just bring the puck around him. Blasting it high does nobody any good. Point shots, especially in adult leagues, should either be tip-able or create rebounds. Putting one off my chin in front accomplishes neither and prevents your teammates from creating screens.

I was thinking more of the NHL where guys want to get it on net ASAP from the blueline. Shooting and passing lanes close so fast at that level. I don't see too many guys in beer league trying to block shots like Adam Burrish of the Dallas Stars does.
