Another issue with TotalOnes

I posted here previously about my issues with retail TOs – well – these issues have been resolved by getting a new pair (custom this time) through warranty replacement so kudos to Bauer for doing that!

But now that I had the new skates for ~ 3 months a new problem has developed that is different in nature:

Previously the skates didn’t fit right, they were wrapping my ankles way to much which caused the reflex tongue to be pushed against the liner eventually wearing it down.

The fit is perfect now, but I still ended up with a hole in the liner – in a different place now (deeper in the boot, not at the eyelets as before), see the pic below:

http://www3.telus.net/majesticnutrition/DSC04955.JPG

Apparently the plastic piece that Bauer used to reinforce eyelets (or mexabix as it’s called on the customs form) simply poke through the paper thin liner and now digs into my ankle causing discomfort.

Bauer would only warranty the stakes ones, plus I actually love the fit & performance of the skate overall – they’re holding great with exception of this problem.

So is there anything I could do to fix it like sewing a small leather patch on top or something?

Thanks!

Could sew a leather strip over it, yes

thanks JR, how long would it need to be to hold up though (ie where would I secure/attach it) since I can't just sew it into the liner itself?

Might even get away with gluing it.

actually I was thinking about it myself - there isn't a lot of friction & movement in that area

any recomendation on what leather (or other more suitable material) & glue would be best for this application?

Fabric glue works pretty well for these sorts of things, or a 2 part epoxy would probably work fine too. Not sure what material to use, but anything thin and decently stiff (leather, fake leather, suede, etc.) would probably be a good choice?

Fabric glue will most likely work, 2-part epoxy won't.

What I am saying is that nobody thinks for themselves anymore.

Take an old pair of gloves, gut the palm, cut a strip from the palm, and glue it on the boot.

I'll await the new thread you'll start with your fix.

Thanks for advice JR

I do disagree on not thinking part though - has really nothing to do with the topic since the point of my question was to seek best advice & collect information, only after that the thinking process can really begin otherwise as we all know a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and I personally don’t want to mess around with $1K skates (that’s how much customs cost in Canada after taxes btw) without knowing what I’m doing.

Priceless.

Maybe take it to a shoe maker or if there is a skate repair shop in your area. That way you'd get a professional job done.

I agree a Cobbler would be able to fix this for you for a decent price I'm sure.

Not disagreeing, but just curious as to why a 2-part epoxy wouldn't work? I've used 2 part epoxy (J-B weld) on fabrics before and it works great, though I suppose it depends on the fabric?

This is said frequently but how many people here have actually had successful equipment repairs done by a shoe guy? All the reputable shoe people around me won't even get near hockey gear.

Must just be me then, all my shoe places and cleaners are afraid of potential damage to their equipment when dealing with my gear.
