Beginner Equipment

Recommended Posts

I am just starting out with hockey and plan on taking a hockey class this summer and then playing in a rec league at my college in the fall. The rec league is a no check league as well. I have skates and have been skating at least once a week at the local arena. I have been looking at equipment and plan on getting some soon. I have been to the LHS and got help with figuring out my sizing. I was looking for some suggestions on equipment and reviews on some of the stuff I was looking at. Any help is appreciated.

Shoulder Pads: CCM U+ 05, Easton EQ20, Reebok 4K or 3K

Shin Guards: CCM U+ 07, Easton EQ20 or EQ40, Reebok 6K or 4K

Elbow Pads: CCM U+ 07, Easton EQ30 or S13, Reebok 8K or 6K

Pants: CCM U+ 07 or 05, Easton EQ20 or EQ30, Reebok 7K or 5K

I am 6' 200lbs if they makes any difference. Thanks for any help!

All of the product at that level should be fine for a hockey class and rec league, assuming the fit is good. Just don't skimp on the tailbone protection in the pants.

For sp you're better off getting the cheapest most manuverable thing possible. It's non check you don't even really need them most guys in men's league don't wear them or if they do they wear the lightest least protective things possible. Assuming they feel the same for u I'd go with the 4k.

For sg you're gonna not want that eq20, get what feels best.

For ep get what fits best they are all more or less identical in terms of protection.

For pants based on your beginner status you won't want the eq20 , 05 and 5k. You'll get more ass protection with the other models. Get what fits best.

With virtually all gear right now with the major companies, bauer ccm easton Reebok warrior there are almost no models I would stay away from, there are a couple that suck but they're pretty much on par with each othwr in terms of quality. Get what feels best.

Congrats on getting into hockey, you'll love it and soon you'll be playing 2 or more times a week. I would disagree just a bit on the shoulder pads. The number one injury I see from so-called no check leagues are shoulder injuries. Incidental/accidental contact is common, especially if there is a mix of beginners out there. And every league has those few douche-bags who don't follow the rules or cant control their tempers. Falls are common as well and they occur from a variety of reasons, inexperience, contact, ruts, bad sharpening, lost edges, etc. The one area I wouldn't skimp on is shoulders. You can buy last years model at closeout pricing for a great deal. Don't listen to those who say you can't move in them either. Most of these models are very flexible.

I agree that you should go cheap but try to find pads on clearance. Your lhs sometimes has sales or check online for deals. Even though it is a non checking league people still take slap shots or wrist shots right in front of you.

As Chadd has commented, all the equipment you have choosen is a good level of protection for your level of hockey. Well done.

Check out a few local Play It Again Sports if they are in your area. The selection is going to be limited because of your size (don't take offense, it is alot of smaller stuff usually), but if you can find some pants or shoulders it will save you tons of money.

I play adult beer league and use RBK 3K and they are fine. Granted there are only a couple of beginners so noone is out of control, but I've had no issues. Alot of people like the Sherwood shoulders too for their minimal design.

I agree with Mac53, I saved A LOT of money by buying "old model" high end equipment on clearance. Check the forums on this site for reviews if you find something you like, but are unsure.

Thanks for the responses and keep them coming.

From what I understand is that there are people in the league that are one step below playing college to people that are beginners.

Keep in mind that even if you are a beginner and you are a MSH member you will be outfitted with pro-stock equipment within six months. It is just impossible to avoid. Congrats on starting the game and good luck with your wallet.
