New helmet and Visor

Recommended Posts

Im looking at getting a new helmet this year and I want some input about different helmets.

Im trying to find something low profile and light. I was considering the S19 but a friend of mine told me he had a bauer straight cut on an s19 and it weighed the front of the helmet down.

I like the look of the 7500, and ideally I would want a 4500 but Im a little unsure of how well it will protect my head without having any EPP foams in it. Is there any other helmets that share the same shell as the 4500 or are as low profile as it?

Im pretty sure I know what visor I want, but I dont know what model it is. I want the same one Kovalchuk wears, can someone let me know what model it is? and he has a 4500, correct?

Thanks for your help everybody,

Your first step for a helmet should be to find one that fits your head correctly. Don't worry about who wears what brand/style because it may not fit for you. Go try some stuff on.

I'm using a 5500, feels great and it has the EPP foams. Been using it for about a year and a half and it still feels the same as it did when I got it brand new. Sometimes it doesn't feel like I'm not even wearing a helmet.

My LHS doesnt have alot of models and is overpriced. Online is my best bet.

What I would also like to know is what Bauer helmets share shells?

The 4500 is the choice of a lot of NHLers so that should tell you about comfort and safety from their POV. Granted, I could name a couple guys who've had concussions this year wearing that helmet, but they were either not wearing a mouth guard (Doughty) or it was a some flukey, hard hit that could have happened to any helmet.

The 9500 and 5500 are the same shell but the 9500 uses some nice EPP foams and the 5500 uses triple density foams.

The 7500 is what I'm interested in getting too and it's the closest to the 4500 shell, but it's really a Nike Bauer 5500 clone.

However...I'm sticking with my Easton helmets for the reasons you mentioned. My S9 is low profile and light...I love it even though I'm a Bauer guy all the way. The problem with the S19 is that it's too light...if you like the Easton look and can fit in it properly the S9 is a bit heavier, but can handle visors a bit better. I use an Itech pro wave aviator and it's balanced nicely. If you really care about EPP foams, get the S13. It's somewhere in between the 9 and 19.

I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you can get the same exact visor Kovalchuk wears. You can get a Bauer aviator cut but it won't have the same cut-out on the sides. You may want to check out some visors from Heijduk Sport (can find some on IW and Hockey Giant), they look to be closer to the "european" style IMO.

the helmet is the most important piece of your gear, with all the headshot's happening i had to ditch my Bauer 4500 and get the 9900 fits super good and super comfy, but thats the reason why its the safest, try every helmet because they have all different fits and the one that fits the best is the safest. i would recommend a Oakley visor safest and lightest.

I'm not sure of this but I think I read somewhere on here that EPP foam is not necessarily better than VN foam (in terms of protection). Anyway it's a matter of comfort mostly, I'm personally not crazy about helmets with EPP foam as they slide too much on my head and sweat just drips in my eyes
