Turco Bet

Recommended Posts

Anyone see the article on Marty Turco making a bet with a habs fan during the game last night? I found an article on it along with a picture and sound clip from the guy he bet. I think it's harmless fun but who knows what Bettman and the league will think. http://www.nowpublic.com/sports/marty-turco-5-bet-audio-photo-goalie-bets-habs-fan-5-dollars-2774504.html

It's already been stated by Dreger that the league will not be handing down any punishment or investigating Turco for this.

Yeah as if Turco had any say in the game or even "threw" the game for $5... I think it's all in good fun from Turco's part and in the end, there wasn't any money that changed hands as Turco gave the $5 back to the fan after Montreal scored in OT.

I remember when Ron Wilson got fined for offering a cash reward for the winning goal scorer against San Jose, with the league saying it "violated the salary cap"... which makes no sense since its his own money out of his own pocket and its not salary blah blah blah. Not to mention it happens all the time.

The coach is paid by and a part of the organization. He pays a player and it becomes monetary gain outside of his contract and not recorded under the salary cap. That is illegal. The local CHL team, for a while, was signing players below salary caps then giving them jobs at the local businesses that the owner of the team had around town. They were getting paid pretty unreasonable salaries for "working" at fast food joints. The team was fined because this was cap circumvention. Goes along the same lines.

A fan complete unassociated with the organization and a backup goal tender with absolutely no effect on the outcome of the game making a $5 bet is quite different.

So how do things like Ovi's CCM deal factor in to the cap? Is it bc they are outside of the organization?

That has absolutely nothing to do with what the organization pays him.

Anyone see the clip of turco open the bench door when a blues player was leaning against it? They were both laughing about it. He's just a funny guy who likes to have fun.

how do you know it was his cash?

it's ok for the players to offer spiffs between themselves, but when a person in a managerial role does it, it violates CBA rules, plain and simple.

In most cases that is true, but I seem to recall that the owners of the Wild had a stake in one of the gear companies a little while back (Easton or Mission, I think) and it would have been interesting if any Wild players had endorsement deals with said gear company.

Yeah I guess technically it violates the rules... but it was made into a far bigger deal than it needed to be. I suppose it was their own fault for saying there was money on the table on camera.. had they kept it to themselves (as coaches and players usually do - hence nobody knowing), it wouldn't have blown up like that.
