EQ50 Skate Thread

Recommended Posts

I had a chance to try these things on at my LHS this past weekend, and I hadn't really seen any threads on the skate yet. So I figured I'd do a quick post on some observations I had on the skate.

1)If the Stealth doesn't fit your foot, you have a better chance of these working. The whole skate is a bit wider everywhere. Heel is wider than the Stealth for sure..If you have a really narrow heel may not work for you. Think the skate has a chance to fit a couple different foot types.

2)Liner/padding is extremely comfortable, maybe the most comfortable I've felt yet. But that's just my opinion. I think it feels fantastic though.

3)Easton rep says that you can not judge the skate until you heat it. Claims the skate was engineered for a 360 fit with heating and that's how you have to judge the fit. My good friend who works at the LHS, got the chance to heat them well before the skate came out and he agreed. He claims the skate feels world's different heated.

4)No surprise, it's light as well.

The only thing I noticed that I wasn't sure about was the overall stability of the skate. Could just be that I haven't been on Razr Bladz holders in a while. Or my terrible pronation.

All in all, seems like Easton put out a solid skate. Think people may like it a lot more then some of the previous Easton products.

I picked up a pair last weekend. They were comfy out of the box but baking did make a big difference. I have only skated on them a few times but so far I could not be happier with them.

They seem to come around the front of your foot a lot at the top. Think old Mission boots if any of you remember that style of fit.

Yes!! I know exactly what you mean....that's why I had to get rid of my mission L7's.....

Wondering if anyone is wearing these now since the were released retail on April 1st. Haven't seen any threads about them and wondering how the performance, comfort and weight of the skate and how they compare to the s17's.

I just picked a pair up on Saturday, and had my first chance to skate in them last night at an open skate with the little lady. I don't know how helpful I can be, though, because my previous skates were a pair of 8 year old CCM 852's that I should never have been wearing (I blame a combination of youth, ignorance, and a really good sale on them online). This time I went to an actual shop, had an actual person fit and size me, and actually bought a pair of skates that will fit my feet.

With that lengthy disclaimer out of the way, these skates feel GREAT. There's a good amount of stiffness in them right away, but not so much that I feel immobilized or "trapped" in them. There was already a little bit of flex in them, which is a design feature incorporated into the boot if I understood the fitter correctly; it felt good, not too loose, but flexy enough to get out over my toes a little if I wanted to. The boot has a really snug fit around the entirety of my ankle, and it feels like my heel is really locked in there. Also, the tongue feels really good, but that's more due to my old tongues being absolutely worthless and broken down. Any other comments about how good they felt on the ice are probably due to my old skates being just that bad, so I won't bore you with the other details.

My only complaint is that the blade on my right skate is bent, right out of the box. I've taken it to 2 pro shops to get it repaired, but neither one was able to take care of it; I'm probably just going to take them back to where I got them and have them swap out the bad steel for a new set of runners.

Here's a link to some quick pictures I took the other day. I can take more pictures, if anyone is interested.

I don't follow?

The only reason I ask is because I love Mission boots (L7 and XP) and I can't figure out, for the life of me, what this post means.

Think of a pair of sneakers that when you tie the laces up for a knot, the top two eyelets practically come together. I thought this was how the EQ50 skate looked to me at the top. For some players, this may work while for others there can be no forward flex in the boot.

OK, now I know what you mean exactly DS.

Funny thing you mention this...I've been in an L7/XP boot for the past couple of seasons and truth be told I skip the second to top eyelet (going from the third directly to the top) to give myself more forward flex for this very reason. (while not losing any lateral stiffness)

I have had mine for about 2 weeks now and I love em. My S17's were great performing skates but these skates perform even better for me. They respond to every movement of my foot. Ton of forward flex and you get that "made just for my feet" feeling while you are skating. They are very comfy. As far as weight, they do not feel any heavier than my S17's.

Did you get the same size as your s17?

I have narrow heels. Has anyone found the heel to be too wide if you fitted comfortably into S17s?

No, my Eq50's are a half size smaller than my s17's. I fit perfectly into my 17's and I fit perfect into my 50's. I have no problem with the heel, gives me a good heel lock.

I dont post here often but i thought i'd throw my 2cents in on this topic, i've had mine since mid-april and i love them the boot is amazing i block alot shots on the point and they have held up great with only one dent from a slap shot so far, i wasnt so crazy about the holders though so i had them switched to tuuks, now they are my favorite skates ever they light, protective and fit really well

Its just my personal prefrence my stride just feels better/more efficient with tuuks i cant really tell you what makes the tuuk better since my equipment "iq" is average at best there is a noticeable diffrence though

I had an injury over the summer (strained hip flexor) that forced me to take quite a bit of time off from skating, so I haven't put as many hours into these skates as I would have liked. However, the time I did spend in them was fantastic. They've been relatively easy to break in, without too much pain as the break in progressed. I've been having to re-lace them about halfway through each skate, which certainly isn't my first choice, but doesn't seem to be anything that I would flag as unacceptable. The heel lock is fantastic, as (when I get the skate laced tightly enough) I don't feel any movement in my heel. Again, the stiffness if wonderful; I can actually cross over now, which is something my last POS skates didn't allow me to do, as they were almost completely broken down in the ankle support. Additionally, I've been having some pain on the lateral sides of my feet, along the the metatarsals, so I just had the skates stretched out a bit. I can't skate until Friday, but hopefully that does the trick.

Otherwise, I would continue to highly recommend these skates, provided they are a good fit for your feet.

Had the same issues with a pair of Bauer skates. Took 'em back to the store and they couldn't straighten the blade. the whole runner was cockeyed. The boot got sent back to Bauer and new skates were shipped my way. Talk to your store or the Easton rep. they should hook you up!
