Heel lifts

Recommended Posts

I want to add heel lifts to my x:60's. I do not want to deal with paying for profiling just for the lhs to sharpen them back to flat.

My question is, how do you determine the right amount of lift? And does having a larger size skate mean you need more of a lift? It seems to me the angle of lift would change due to the difference in length between the forefoot and heel(size 8 vs.12)

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? I had heel lifts made and put on my skates by some awesome people here at MSH but it was to get my Supreme's to match Vapor pitch.

I added 1/16 inch lifts to my x60s. I wear an 8D. It was just enough to make me feel more in balance. You would have test it out by trial and error. Try 1/16 first and then try the 1/8 second to see which works better for you.

Yep, all about the right balance for you. It's different for everyone, some people prefer to be on their heels and some prefer to be on their toes. Really just a matter of preference honestly.

The best way to do it is have a professional watch you skate. If that's not feasible a real professional should be able to get you in the ballpark based on the information you give them. Then you can adjust from there. It's most likely a multiple step process.

One thing I liked about Mission skates, being able to adjust your pitch right out of the box.

Wouldn't a bad sharpening job affect non profiled skates just as much as skates profiled for more pitch?

If the skates are cross-ground the profile will be lost and about $60 down the drain. A bad sharpening would simply have uneven edges etc, whereas the profile determines the balance point by shortening the runner in specific places. Hope that helps.

Yes, but as stated elsewhere, you can't sharpen away the lift. But you can easily screw up the profile with the wrong mount of pressure.

I want to get my Vapors at more of a graf pitch. I feel flat footed and I want to be in more of an athletic position.

i dont get it. can't a bad sharpener unintentionally alter a "stock" profile just as easily as a bad sharpener alter a custom profile? so if you get heel lifts and use a bad sharpener you will end up with the wrong profile also.

Go to your LHS.

If that's not a possibility, go to a cobbler. They should have some thin but sturdy cardboard you can cut to fit the heel of your skate. start with one layer, then add more until you feel comfortable.

You can also see if they have shims, which would go between the holder and the boot.

You get it and are absolutely correct. A bad sharpener can effect the profile be it stock or custom and can also effect the pitch with or without lifts. A correct crossgrind won't necessarily do any harm, but a bad crossgrind will. Bottom line, a bad sharpener can mess up your skates no matter what you have on them. This is why I prefer to put pitch on the steel rather than use lifts. Even with lifts, in many cases you still need to profile to make sure the steel isn't counteracting the lifts. So why use lifts, just profile them and refresh it when you feel it has changed. Don't get me wrong, lifts are great if you have a great sharpener, but even with that, you'll need to profile eventually.

In my case I went with lifts since no one in my state will do a custom profile and I didn't want to mail out my steel for sharpenings.

Thanks to everyone! I went with lifts 1/8th in lifts by the guys at San Jose SHarpening. Quick and easy addition. I told them I wanted more of a Graf pitch and that is what they recommended.

As to the question of profiling. I like the way I move on the stock Step Steel. This was an easier way to do things in my book. This is obviously a "Chicken or the Egg" conversation. I will let you guys know how I like them.

You can find them on facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/San-Jose-Sharpening-and-Profiling/121598007902397?ref=ts. Really good guys! They have done my lifts, my Tongues(They make Tongues in house!), my step steel, and my lifts! They do FBV by mail. I am a fan of this, I send out steel and have mine back in three days and in state mail is cheap for me!

Well if that is the case I will only mention it that once. In fact I think I am taking the heel lifts out. Not really a fun of changing my skating mechanics. Skated em twice and already know it is not for me as a D-man.
