Easton S17 Skate durability

Recommended Posts

I've had my s17's for a couple of months now. The only problem I've had so far was the stitching on one of my tongues came apart after one skate session. This is my first pair of Eastons and I like them a lot so far.

I've had good luck with my S17's, but I'd like to know if anybody else has experienced the same thing with their skates as I recently have. I don't know if it's the construction of the boot or the materials, but when I'm all laced up and flex forward, the skates make some creaking sounds. Anybody else get these strange sounds from their skates?

Scalloped steel may be the cause of the sounds

Good point. I haven't played around with changing this part of my skates in the past; would there be any obvious performance changes/improvements do making this change?

Thanks for the comments on the S17's.

The Easton skates still seem to be a bit hit or miss in the durability department and being in the UK i didnt want to have to send them back to the US to be replaced/repaired.

Finally decided on a pair of MLX skates and they arrived late last week.

Thought I would chime I'n here. S17 is my first high end skate. I've had them about 3 months. Unfortunetly not that impressed and will probably go back to Bauer when they totally fall apart

Rivets came off either the last couple games or tonight not really sure. Noticed when drying my skates tonight. Good god that could have been ugly. Blade was also missing one screw must have come lose. This could have been real bad tonight.

Logos fell off the sides. Cosmetic but still pretty shitty glue.

They also soften very quickly and I've noticed less support. They creased easily and I've noticed the materials cracking.

I'm taking them I'n tomorrow for warranty.

Little disapointed after paying 450$. But they were on sale instead of 700 so what do u do!

Ouch, that definitely sounds like a warranty issue rather than a model issue. Let us know how the 2nd pair of S17s go for you.

i would love new skates haha. They will probably just fix them wouldnt they? install new rivets, add logo, install screws? I know they are cracking and basically look like they are falling apart but i just see them doing that instead of giving me new ones :( then when the boots finally crack apart maybe I would get something new.

If it is a warranty issue I'm sure he'd be getting EQ50s, aren't S17s out of production yet?

Depends on what Easton has in the warehouse. Last time I checked, S17s were still available, just in limited sizes/colors

Well just had the shop fix the rivets re glue the logos on and install

New blade screws and tighten. I'm a little skeptical for how long these are going to last playing 4-5 times a week. I'll update as winter rolls in

I really don't understand why so many of these posters have had so many problems with Easton skates. How is it that I have have several pairs and had none of the issues that seem to plague high end Easton skates. Either I'm extremely lucky and don't get any lemons or I'm a great judge of skates. Neither one of these senarios seem plausable to me. So I guess I'll just stick with what works for me for the time being. I'll let you guys know if any problems creep up with my new S-17s. As I said before I may go to Reebok or CCM next time because their top end skates are Canadian made and the fit is very close to Eastons.

I have owned 4 pairs of skates. I play 4-5 times a week winter and 2-3 spring. My first set of bauers were used skates and i just upgraded after a year no issues. Second sent was bauer again low end, and I actually had wierd pains from using them after about 6 months, I dont think the fit was quite right. So sold them. 3rd set was bauer again and had a blade crack after year and a half. Not sure if it was a puck or just getting old. Instead of repairing it I went and baught the s17s as they were pretty much half price clear out. 3 months later I have rivets falling out screws missing ( just lose i guess so not a big deal ) logos peeled off and creases in the boot cracking. Not really sure if its me or the skates :S either way 3 months is pretty fast for high end skates so I probably will go back to bauer aswell as my first 3 sets were bauer and only issue was a cracked blade.

It sounds like, to me, that you are not drying out your skates properly. Easton's high end skates in particular are notorious for falling apart if they are not taken care of properly. Rusted out rivets and peeling logos is the result of moisture, not bad construction. It is the fault of the materials used, but moisture is the real culprit, if that makes sense.

Remove the skates from your bag, remove the foot beds, and hang them upside down. If you have a boot dryer, I recommend throwing your skates on them.

i play usually every second day, or 2 in a row and usually all i do is leave them in the back of my truck to dry out. I have a toneau cover. I dont hang them. I guess thats lazness on my part so i will try and make a habit of doing it. I am a little concerned as they were $$ so I better take a bit better care of them. There nice skates and super comfy and light. Just wierd they would fall apart so easily.

Depending where you live the heat can be baking your skates everyday and leading to premature wear and tear as well. I have a pair of first gen S15's that are still in great shape but I great care with them.

I've worn easton skates since the 1500c's came out and I'm now in s17's. I had s15's in between those two and it seems like easton's durability gets worse and worse. The s15's only lasted one year. I take pretty good care of my skates, dry them out etc. S15 basically fell off of my feet.

I've played 4 games and coached 6 sessions in the s17's. The little easton logo someone else mentioned exploded when hit by a soft wrist shot. No big deal but it is very disappointing. Lost a rivet already too which completely pisses me off. The s15's had tons of rivet issues and that seems to be the trend with the s17's. I've never had a skate lose a rivet so quickly. I'll never buy another easton product after this. complete trash.

I have had the same issues. Skating 3-4 times a week and they are pretty much done. About 8 months or so. Kind of sucks I'm just happy I bought these on sale on Clearence. I'm going to check out the apx pretty quick as winter gets going and I'm playing more. Sucks to hear ur having the same issues

I think if more people understood the Easton skates, expectations could be managed much better.

-The skates are made of composite (most of the skate anyway), the amount of moisture they are going to absorb due to this is going to be minimal, and often the rivets will rust out because the moisture only has a few places to go.

-Everything you see on the boot is glued on (stiching is more for asthetics/affix one piece of fabric to the next). What does that mean? Well, when something starts peeling, glue it back down, simple fix.

-You have to air these skates out quickly after skating, to ensure that they last longer, moisture needs to be removed, it will break down the non composite part of the boot quickly.

These skates are great, it is unfortunate that more companies do not make something like them, I really enjoy the "recoil" the skates have, and think they are a step in the right direction for skates.

Skated in both the S15 and S17 and never had a problem with rivets rusting. Probably because I remove the footbeds and place the skates on a boot dryer after skating. As for durability, I didn't have any issues with the S17. Agree with Zach on the 'coil' technology.

Love my s17's and in my 3rd pair, although I put TUUK holders on them. Narrow heel and low height of toe-box is great as they minimize extra space for me. They don't last long but most of today's top end skates don't as they're made for performance and weight and not durability....think performance tires for cars. I had a 911 with tires that lasted about 8000 miles, but get almost three times that out of my SUV tires.

Sure you expect more durability from a $500 plus skate, but I play with a guy who has an 8 month old pair of total ones that are falling apart and he paid $800 for them.

I'm trying to wait for the next Easton skate (don't like the EQ50) but haven’t seen anything except one photo online (Easton RS skate). If they dramatically change the skate, I'd move back to Bauer and the APX, which is the next best fit for my foot.

I'm in agreement on this comment too. If there's a significant fit change on the next version of the S17 model then I'd have to consider going back to the APX/Vapor line, but I'm pretty happy with the S17. I've made it a common practice to dry them out immediately after getting home and pulling out the footbeds. Doing this has helped my skates look and play just like new for the last 5+ months.

almost every game something on these skates start to go. stitching on the side is coming apart now which is probably not a good thing.

Anyone have any insight of eastons warranty on these or will they just say its wear and tear? Honestly think they have about a month left in them. They are at about 5 months old now.

Stitching is really a non factor. I will agree that it is unfortnuate that stitching is busting out on you. It is worth noting that the stitching is really not that important on these skates as the non composite portion of the skate is glued on to the carbon.

Think of the carbon skates like a stick: Sure, the pain is being chipped off the stick, but the stick itself is structurally sound and still good.

The carbon skates might eventually become "ratty" looking, but they are still good.

Also, I find copper rivets go a long way with these skates to help ease the standard steel rivets rusting out.

Thanks good to know. I was a little worried my foot would eventually blow out the side of the boot on a break away or something ;) Im not gonna lie a play alot and am pretty hard on skates, just didnt think my first pair of legit top dollar skates would fall apart so fast. All my other skates were basic or mid level and only thing that ever went was a blade cracking so its a bit different. I like the performance just hoping they can finish a season. Cant afford 600 bucks a season on skates lol
