NHL considers banning "Green Men"

Recommended Posts

While I agree 100%, thats neither illegal nor ban-worthy.

Sure it is, it detracts from the game and blocks the view of people that actually pay for their tickets.

Thats retarded. The people who are around them in the arena LOVE them. Banning them is just ridiculous politics and is the type of thing I hate with todays professional sports.

Good idea, NHL; instead of worrying about the safety and wellbeing of your players, ban people who actually enjoy the crap you're allowing to manifest itself as hockey.

Brilliant.

Technically speaking, I am pretty sure bringing waffles into the arena to taunt players and doing handstands against the glass is against the rules in most arenas. If they injure themselves doing a stunt then the arena may be liable.

However, I do feel they should not be banned since they actually add some entertainment but that's my opinion!

So this is your line in the sand with the NHL, a pair of jackasses dancing around in spandex?

I thought it was funny at the beginning, but now it's been stretched out for way too long.

ONLY people from the home team love them. I even watched a couple JrA games where there were these people doing the Green Men thing.

My vote goes to the BAN side.

Makes no sense. Chadd stated it the best....

attention-whore douchenozzles.

first of all, they are celebrities in vancouver, it takes them over 30 minutes from the time they arrive at the arena to get to their seats because everyone wants autographs, pictures, etc, so you cannot use the excuse that they are a nuisance to the paying customer. the arena has received ZERO complaints or negative feedback from arena spectators within the arena nor spectators within the general vicinity. HOWEVER, i do think they went overboard with the Underwood cut out. that was stupid and i think that is the reason why they are getting the negative attention from the nhl head offices -- they made it personal (much like infamous sean avery comment). the nhl has advised them that they are not to touch the glass, but so far that is it. the league receives complaints from visiting teams, this is the only reason and in my opinion, it takes away from the fanatic atmosphere that is finally developing in this city, giving the team a real home ice edge. what's the difference between a fan sitting behind the bench yelling, taunting and swearing at coaches/players or banging on the glass in the corners, or chanting/taunting certain opposing players?

The difference is who the attention is focused on. When folks are cheering, yelling and what-not the attention is on the game. When the buffoons are doing their thing the attention is on them and not the game. One thing I do know, sooner or later some Canuck fan is going to turn this into the latest conspiracy theory of the NHL versus Vancouver.

have you ever been to a canucks game, bud? my guess is no. if you have been, you'd know that they aren't pulling their stunts while the clock is running and the play is moving. you are uneducated in this subject and even though i know you love to argue, you have no idea. they jump around, dancing and standing on their seats but AS SOON as the music stops, they sit down and watch. the tickets belong to the father of one of the guys (i dont know if the green men are brothers or friends). when they are at the game, the ONLY time they do any of these antics is when the camera is on them, and the camera is only on them during stoppages or tv time outs. no one cares to keep all eyes on these two sitting down in the corner, in arguably one of the worse places to sit in the entire building (in terms of sightlines). when i am at the game, they might bang on the glass when the plays moves by them, but that happens in every arena in the league (i find that more annoying than anything)... where they get 99% of their airtime is via the penalty box camera, they know that, this is where it all started. so when a player gets sent in there, they start their shit because a. the guy is in there and b. the camera is on them. during the game, they focus on the play, just like every other fan. like i said, there are no complaints from anyone except for the opposing teams and the only limits the league has put on the guys at the moment is to not touch the glass. that in itself should show you just how much of an impact they have on the game itself. to reiterate: the carrie underwood thing was stupid. they were trying to outdo themselves with the vince vaughn thing and it backfired and this is the only reason why they are in hot water, guaranteed.

That's funny... just yesterday on the front page of NHL.com the greenmen were featured in several videos.

The antics don't have to be during play to detract from the game. I'd rather see a replay on the jumbotron than have some green spandexed ass dancing in my face.

This feels like one of those cases where if it was your home team, you would love the idea, but because it's not, you have to hate it. Simply being "attention whores" doesn't really count as a bannable offense. I guess the NHL wants to ban them because no other fans are good enough to get their stadium pumped up. And no I don't mean yelling and clapping during the Star Spangled Banner because they don't know the words to their own anthem.

This is absolutely ridiculous. They don't break any rules! Since when are you not allowed to dance around in a green suit? There would be no significance in banning them at all, there human, and they also pay their own money to go to games. It would be totally pointless to ban them, and the fact that people actually agree with banning them really mind boggles me.

Thene the people that sit near them complain to management. But if those people don't mind, there is no way that the NHL should limit this. They aren't swearing. They aren't doing anything more than any other fan might do sitting in those specific seats. The barrel guy in Denver. The firefighter at jets games. It's all something synonymous with those specific teams or venues. As long as they aren't breaking laws or common decency (pretending to masturbate, pretending to engage in sex, etc) then let them go.

chippa: when the dude at MSG has all the cameras on him and he does his crazy little fish out of water dance for 30-45 seconds at least once DURING EVERY HOME GAME, and even players watch, no one complains. when the chicks come out in their tight pants or mini skirts to sweep the ice, no one complains. these are all antics that keep the crowd entertained during stoppages. the majority of people go to the game to be entertained, not to sit there with their arms crossed watching every replay on the big screen like an analyst. its not a chess match.

edited to address chippa

And here I thought people bought tickets to a hockey game to go and watch a hockey game.

Your clearly not getting this. The fans around the green men love watching thier antics, like it has been said before, there are NO complaints from fans in the arena.

Shotty said it best when he mentioned the barrel man, MSG guy, and others like that. They're Super Fans, Deal with it, every city has the right to have at least one of them.

Edited to add onto my response - I buy tickets every year to go to a Seahawks game. It is not just to go watch a football game. Half the reason(and the only reason my girlfriend enjoys it) is the atmosphere created at the game. This is the same thing that the green men help achieve at Rogers Arena.

Then watch the game. There not forcing you to watch them, and they don't do anything when the clock is running. Saying you bought tickets to watch a game isnt really an argument, they do NOTHING to you. If you have a problem, then dont watch. Its not rocket science
