Marc Savard- Never to play again

Recommended Posts

Chiarelli's words seemed blunt but from what I've read over the past few months, Savard has been the one who's floated the concept that his career might be over.

His career IS over, I feel bad for him especially since that @#$%$ Cooke did him in. He has a nice pay day so he should be financially secure for his life but his symptoms are extreme and any more hockey or head trauma might ruin his life or end it. Best to quit with what you have left.

He's done IMO. In the interest of the rest of his life, I think he has to hang them up. Especially with what we're seeing with the deaths of so many of these enforcers or former enforcers.

I hope the NHL and Matt Cooke are happy. Matt Cooke can't die of gonorrhea fast enough.

Savard is done. I really hate to say it and I know people hate to hear it, but it's the truth. If he gets back on the ice, it is only a matter of time before another injury occurs. At this point everyone needs to consider the safety of his brain and realize that lacing up the sates again is the wrong decision. I love Savard and enjoyed his time in Boston, but I am far more concerned about his health than seeing him on the Garden ice again.

Colin Campbell is probably ecstatic. He won't have to deal with "that little diver" ever again. That said, Campbell and Cooke will both make the league better when they leave.

I would guess hes done and cooke should be done too!! Cooke is a dirty player and it drives me nuts people in pittsburgh like him...yet they think the people who hit sid should have had extreme penalties for it (i dont disagree) campbell is too soft on players injuring other players.

I'm a non-bandwagoning Pittsburgh Fan. I was a big fan of Kovalev back in the early 2000's. I'M A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FAN AND HATE MATT COOKE. I'm not happy with people supporting him either.

If he was on any other of the 29 NHL teams they'd be pushing for a suspension for him. And not a 2 game, a severe punishment.

On-Topic Discussion: It's a shame that this scumbag playing for my favorite team had to end the career of another player but I'm glad he made the correct choice by not risking further injury.

Considering Savard's age, and the severity of both hits, he's likely done. Concussions are a touchy subject, and no one will know whether he would have been cleared to play now IF he didn't come back for the 2010 playoffs.

While Cooke did most likely end Savard's career, you have to factor in Savard being your typical hockey player and not reporting any concussion symptoms to his doctors and saying 'yeah, I'm ready to play'

I gues it is the best thing to do for Savard.. With the concussions he had it is not the question if but when he gets another one, or maybe even worse.

I can't wait for training camp to open and see which reporter has the balls to ask Cooke how he feels about Savard being done

Cooke wasn't Savard's first concussion in the NHL and it wasn't his last. Say what you will about Matt Cooke (much of it is justified), but let's not lay Savard's fate at Matt Cooke's feet. Savard was medically cleared to play after Cooke's hit. And he did so.

But would Savard still be playing had the Cooke hit not happened? The answer is yes.

At the end of the day if Cooke hadn't been a douchebag on his hit, perhaps Savard would've been less susceptible to the 2 he suffered last year from Hunwick and someone else.

My memory is he only had one concussion last year, although he suffered Post Concussion Syndrome over the previous summer -- and after he had returned for the 2010 playoffs -- so he had to sit out until early December.

While it wasn't reported as one, there was speculation that he may have had a minor concussion after a hit in a Lightning game a little while before Hunwick hit him. All that said, concussions are believed to be a cumulative and compounding injury. If Cooke doesn't destroy Savard then who knows what happens going forward. I think Savard had at least a couple of concussions in his history before Cooke smoked him so he may have had troubles going forward either way but we'll never know.
