2011-2012 Suspension thread

Recommended Posts

i hope there wasn't some kind of discussion behind closed doors along the lines of "if it was bitz or ronaldo or some other less than average player it would be really easy to suspend them, but there is no way we can suspend weber, the nashville fans will scream bloody murder"

im not saying it happened - i actually hope this kind of conversation never happens - the skill level/star power should have no influence on what punishment a player gets - but im sure there are fans that will say some of these have been very suspect/suspicious

It wasn't a blind side hit, pretty typical check prior to this year. Given the stature of the players involved, I will guess no more than one game. 50/50 call if he gets anything other than a fine.

Well, we saw the wretched and cowardly response of Shanahan after the Weber/Zetterberg hit, so you may be right. But to me, this looks like a clear intent to injure. Extended elbow elevated above shoulder height planted directly into Alfredsson's head. Alfredsson grabs his dome on the way down and goes directly to the dark room. If that is not 3 games, nothing is. And given Shanahan's precedent, if I am a coach, I'm bringing up all my Carkners. It really is open season and I need protectors and mercenaries. What a sad and horrific joke.

-I think Hagelin will get a game

-Don't think Phillips will get anything

-Burns should get 1 game (direct elbow to the back of nichol's head)

Wouldn't be surprised based on past history if Hagelin's the only one who misses action

I just.......no words anymore.

Craig Adams gets one game automatically unless the NHL rescinds his instigator. He was given an instigator in the last five minutes, so we'll see what the NHL does about that.

Shanahan needs to be more consistent. The rulings seem to be all over the place. The Carkner ruling is absurd and disgusting, also how does Hagelin get more games than Bitz when Bitz caused and injury and Hagelin did not (oh wait Alfredson is an allstar)-

I would put money on it being rescinded. Any legitimacy Shanny had left is absolutely gone after the stuff he announced today.

Of course he had to finish a fight that Crosby started. If i get suspended and lose money because of a pussy teammate that can't fight his own battles, you can rest assured that there would be some heated discussions in the locker room.

Did I hear correcly that Hagelin's suspension may be reviewed and shortened if Alfredsson plays this evening? Surely, not.

Players don't get paid in the playoffs. That is why the joke used to be, "when the paychecks stop, so does Datsyuk."

Adams' instigator upheld. One game for him. Asham has an in-person hearing tomorrow and Neal has two desperate hearings for the hits onCouturier and Giroux. Wow.

No, his suspension will not be reviewed if Alfredsson plays. Been confirmed, at least by McKenzie and I believe Damien Cox on Twitter.

I don't have a problem with the Hagelin suspension - that is right in the wheelhouse of where the suspensions have been - coming in fast on a check and leading with contact to the head.

I think the trickier issue is how the league handles punches, which are, of course, violent purposeful contact to the head. Breaking it down:

1. Skating check with the principal point of contact the head: suspension, expect it. You'll find your exceptions if you look for them, but you'd be a fool to be surprised, Bitz, Hagelin.

2. Punches to the head in a face-to-face fight. No suspension, that's what we call fighting.

3. Punches to the head outside of a face-to-face fight, punches after a check, punches that aren't not returned. I really think the league has no idea what to do with these. Part of the problem is that they happen dozen of times every game, and most are not hard or apparently harmful (insert debate about lifelong build-up of thousands of small hits). Asham? Cross-check and then punching Schenn on the ground. Carkner? Comes flying in punching when Boyle wanted no part of it. Those two are suspensions, but I think the league is really really relucatant to go there unless the punching is particularly brutal, i.e. worse than Marchand on Sedin's face. They have to judge checks -- I don't think they like judging fights.

I also think that's why Shanahan messed up the Weber ruling. It was more like an after-the-whistle fight than an in-play check. I guess. Still dumb.

Taken from a Facebook page.

Here's an update on Penguins suspensions updates: Adams is suspended for Game 4. His instigator in last 5 minutes stands. Auto 1 game suspension and Bylsma get's $10,000 fine. Neal will have 2 phone hearings (one for Couturier/one for Giroux) tomorrow at 10am and Asham will have an in person hearing at 11am.

Interesting. I didn't know that. So when Cooke was suspended for a portion of the playoffs last year (or the year before, I forget), he didn't actually lose any salary?

He noted that there was no injury and Shaw has no history of suspension. So, would he otherwise be facing 5+ games? I simply don't see how this squares with the decision not to suspend Lucic for his hit on Miller earlier this season. Listening to Shanahan squirm around in an interview the other day doesn't make this decision a complete surprise:

It is different than the Lucic Miller situation. 3 games, however, is overkill.
