Wayne Simmonds Hit With Banana During Shootout

This is just unbelievable. This has no place in sports, let alone the world we live in today. I thought we were all past this? Shameful. The amount of support the Twitterverse has been showing has been nothing short of amazing in the wake of the incident...

being a huge flyers fan and also a fan of wayne simmonds, this pissed me off completely, especially after reading the interview wayne gave days ago about how he hasnt really encountered any racism, then some asshole has to go and do something like that. all i can say is wayne simmonds is a class act, he carries himself like a man, and really is the kind of player that any team would love.. that being said, throwing a banana at an athlete because he is black is completely uncalled for and completely ignorant. and the sad thing is that one person who did it, gives a bad name for many others. id love to see the idiot who threw it man up and do it waynes face... THE WORLD HAS NO PLACE FOR STUPID BS LIKE THAT... class act wayne, glad to have you as a flyer, and glad to see so much support around the league

The response (supportive) has been incredible. Unfortunately this type of stuff is MUCH more prevalent in the Eastern Europe Soccer culture, what a shame.

This quote of his from the ESPN article just makes me cringe:

"I guess it's something I obviously have to deal with -- being a black player playing a predominantly white sport."

No Wayne, it's not something you should ever have to deal with. Sports should always transcend race/religion/sex. No one should ever feel intimidated by bigotry to not play a sport. I'm not worried about Wayne, he's obviously going to move past this (sounds like he already has), I'm worried about the thousands of black (or asian/hispanic/etc) kids in North America playing hockey who are going to see this story on sportscenter and then second guess there choice of sport.

Sports should always transcend race/religion/sex.

It goes outside of sports. I've seen message boards, placards and photos that all suggest similar things regarding the President. I can completely understand someone not agreeing with his policies, but anyone who's heard him speak should be thinking prior to making a derogatory post, "Whoa, that guy is WAY smarter than me....."

Simmonds is definitely a class act for moving on from the incident and keeping it professional. It's sad to hear that a "fan" of one team has to pull a douche bag move with racial overtones. Ideally, it would be great for racism not to exist in life, but unfortunately it does.

Considering the game was played in London, ON, there's a good chance this person wasn't a "fan" of either team.

Really hard to see, but here's the video

This is just lame, Simmonds is a super cool dude, met him a bunch of times while he was here in LA, sucks to see this happen.

i realize that the game was in London, ON, that's why i used "fan" instead of fan. the spectator that threw the banana was more like a hooligan than a person there to appreciate the game.

I gotcha, sorry I jumped to the defensive. As a wings fan, I don't want this BS associated with them.

It kicks ass that he went in and scored.

I'd love to see them catch the moron that did this.

Not only that, it was a sick goal too.

no worries, i completely understand. i have a soft spot in my heart for the wings and definitely don't want that douche bag's actions be associated with the wings in any way, shape or form.

That's interesting you say that, because we spent Spring Break in Florida and, while driving in the northern part, I saw a bumper sticker with the Confederate Flag and the text something like "Proud Symbol Of A Great Tradition." I assumed the great tradition referred to slavery, so my first thought was the odds were extremely high that the only connection that driver's ancestors had to the tradition was of being fodder on the battle fields.

Reason #2543 this country is screwed up. People from the South are mad still that they lost the war.

It's very ignorant of you to assume Southerners are the only racists in the country. Especially when the story doesn't involve the U.S. anyway.
