ramensandwich 1 Report post Posted October 24, 2011 I'm having trouble getting a helmet that fits my head, so I thought I'd ask for some help. No matter what helmet brand I choose, I'm always just barely too big to wear a size small. (I'm 22, about 5'9", 180lb.)As stated, I normally buy a size medium, crank it down as far as it will go, and it fits perfect length-wise. However, I've had both Mission and currently Bauer helmets and they wobble from side to side (they are too wide). As a referee, I like it when my helmet is glued pretty tightly to my head. Medium also works better than small for attaching a visor, so it doesn't have to have 1 inch thick spacers on the side to make it work. I wondered if anyone could recommend other brands (before I spend more money) which have a more narrow fit than the Bauer 9900 I'm currently in?
AIREAYE 248 Report post Posted October 24, 2011 Very very hard to recommend a good fit over an internet message board. Have you tried Reebok helmets in small or Easton? They both fit a bit wider than Bauer, especially Reebok.

I'm not sure on the newer models though. I'm usually looking for more width for me.
AIREAYE 248 Report post Posted October 24, 2011 Yeah, he said the medium Bauer guys are too wide, so I suggested the small-sized Reebok helmets
sharks25 9 Report post Posted October 24, 2011 The s19 helmet is pretty narrow.

forbs02 20 Report post Posted October 24, 2011 The 4000 fit me ok in a medium, but it wobbled side to side. I switched to a small int the 5100 and it is the best fitting helmet I have had. The 5500 (7500 whatever) never fit me. I think the 5100 in a small will still take a visor pretty easily. If you have to use spacers, you have to use spacers. Helmet fit is more important. AIREAYE 248 Report post Posted October 24, 2011 Right, but it's something he could try; you never know with helmets.to the OP: have you tried on the V08 or V10s?
bandits_5 18 Report post Posted October 24, 2011 Ive had the same problem and recently went with a V08 in a small and it works perfectly , visor and all
Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 24, 2011 Helmet fit is more important.I couldn't agree more
wrangler 157 Report post Posted October 25, 2011 I found the 5100 just wide enough for me in XL. The 4500 in L or XL was wider. The 5000, 5500, 7500, 8500, and 9500 were way too tight in XL. Every Reebok and CCM helmet I tried was also too narrow. The M11 in XL fit OK; in L it was too narrow.I think it's not just a question of width, but where it's wider or narrower. In my case, the tighter fits pressed in near the temples.I also agree that you need to get a good fit, then deal with whatever it takes when mounting a shield afterwards. The helmet's job is to save you serious grief, not just to be a mounting platform for a cage or shield.
ramensandwich 1 Report post Posted October 25, 2011 Ok guys, thanks for the help! It looks like CCM is definitely the direction to look in. Typically a size small is just a wee bit small length-wise for me, but I'm reading that the CCM V08 and V10 typically run a bit big, so it looks like that's going to be my decision. Bandits_5, do you have any pics of your lid with visor on it?
Jarick 5 Report post Posted October 25, 2011 5100 is fairly narrow, and have you tried the Cascade? I find they run a bit big so the small might fit you (a medium is just a hair large on me cranked down all the way but the small fit well opened up).

Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 25, 2011 I have the opposite problem, I have a huge head.. any recommendations?Shape will play a big role. If you have a round head, look at the CCM or RBK helmets. A buddy of mine has a huge melon and the 4k was the best fit he could find when he decided to upgrade from his Jofa light bulb. danno25nh 3 Report post Posted October 26, 2011 I have a fairly narrow head. The 7500 is too round. While visiting a large hockey store I asked one of the employees what helmet he recommended as narrower than the 7500.Without hesitation he walked over to a 4500 and handed it to me with the comment that it's the only one that fits his head perfectly.I asked about other makes and models to which he replied, "The store is slow, you've already bought pants and shins, if you want to try every helmet in the place we will, in the end this one will fit the best." He handed me a Reebok and an Easton, I told him after trying those two that I believed he made his point. The 4500 is definitely less wide than most helmets I've tried. The 7500 is now a back up. Vet88 674 Report post Posted October 26, 2011 I have a similar problem, M is too small, L is to big. Tried most types in the high end out there. Settled on a L and wear a thick head band, not only does it fit perfectly but I don't get any sweat in my eyes.
